Now we have found the perfect way of doing it ^^

Wait until some random point tomorrow. Just suddenly stand up, drop your shopping basket or what ever. Get to your nearest internet connected device, go on ebay set your filter to <= budget within 100miles of home. Select ending soonest, auctions only then buy the car ending first with it's reserve met. Problem solved.

Following this practice this is what I'd be driving home in.

That sounds like a bit of fun will have to give it a try.

Situation report.

I've gone a bit cool on the Jaguar, for trade-related reasons. I still feel it's good value, but is feeling a bit of a risky punt.

I'm waiting for the S-MX seller to get back to me with whether the timing belt has been changed, which is a crucial bit of information in our ongoing discussion about price. I'm also fast realising that Plymouth is a bloody long way from here - over 7 hours on the train! Mind you, if there's no cambelt info, Plymouth is at least fairly close to Cornwall...

How about this MX-6, being sold by the carswithnoreserve crew in Reading? Bo11 bought his 45 from them and said they were fine, despite some previous bad reviews. Must say their terms seem fair i.e you can take it for a massive test drive and are under no obligation to buy.

Only snag is the colour...

Already on the watch list. As is another one that has cropped up on the same day. "Rare!" Lol. The other one is also on Gumtree for £675.

Could be a fine distraction. Really, if I'm going to get an S-MX, I want an orange one. I'm still thinking of the Jag though. It's very pretty.

I thought the Carina E was British built?

They were, but not until December 1992. Like the Bluebird, they started shipping them over from Japan before British production got underway.

Really, the Accord estate isn't Japanese though, as they were built in America.

I've just been googling about it, i wasn't aware that the early ones were still Jap built, basically if the VIN starts SB... then it's a UK car although they think they have now found the oldest one which is a L plate, i don't know if there's any other ways of telling though.

That trader sounds like a right wazzock. Why doesn't he just say he's going to dig his heals in on the price rather than lose any credibility with a fanciful tale that would leave you questioning the sanity of him and the interested punter.

Wazzock is about right. He has a separate advert on Ebay for just the number plate, where he says the car is for sale for £850! MOT history isn't brilliant to be fair, lots of mention of corrosion (sills, subframe mountings, but never quite a fail, just advisory). Could be a nice car to smoke around in for a few months, or could be a car that'll just fuggin' dissolve during a Welsh winter. I think I'll have to let this one go too.

This car buying lark is bloody difficult when you actually think about it, and don't just plunge headlong into it without considering the consequences. HOW BORING.

Are you speaking to the Jag dude by email or phone? He sounds like a right fanny. My tip is, ring him up and say 'right I am prepared to pay X, I will send a deposit of Y now, are you interested or not FFS'

I had actually picked the phone up to do this before getting a serious attack of cold feet. So sod it. There really is no desperate rush, and I do actually want to buy the right car.

And then something comes along that threatens to derail your plans entirely. It ticks almost no boxes, bar the obvious Japanese one. £450!

Sure, the hood fits about as well as me in a gang of cyclists, and those sills look a little interesting. It's hardly expensive though.

But those always get hit by Peugeot 405s. Guess how I know.
