Dollywobbler's Dead Rover 600 - Replacement sorted

I personnally would have thought purchase cost would be irrelevant to costs of repairs. Doesn't matter how much you paid. My kia cost 300. I couldn't replace that for same price like for like.

I don't disagree, just thinking aloud.

That could either be

A job jobbed, free motoring for x milee

B the starting point for negotiations

You'll be going through the process though, Royal mail have 18 days in the complaint sla, aa must have similar/more. Just smile sweetly and be very upset that your beloved, mint, low mileage rover has been damaged, your pride and joy thay your grandad owned from new

It's f*cked. Gearbox seems to have right royally shat itself. Glad it didn't do that in France...

Evidence submitted to The AA, along with a quote for repairs from the trolley damage. Let's see what occurs.

Bad news Mr Wobbler, is there a plan to replace the gearbox or is it going to be spent on something else?

I doubt that it is worth replacing the box due to the damage the AA whoops caused, any payout would be best put to a replacement car

Its just a PG1 box, get one out of a rover 45 diesel or whatever. Cheap as chips man.

Hastily cobble together an article on Rover 600's being the next big thing in desirable big-money classic motoring, get it published, and then submit it to the AA as evidence that they've ruined everything.

If the French trip was its final major journey, at least it was a good way for the old Rover to go out on.

Sorry to hear about all the problems though.

I really can't be arsed chucking more money at this car. Inspecting the underside revealed rot creeping nicely into pretty much every seam, and my finger went through the sill when I was cleaning it last week. If I enjoyed driving it more, then perhaps I'd be interested in reviving it. I'm not though.

I tell you what though, I'm glad I didn't fill it up before getting to the event. I was getting low on fuel, but just thought "I'll grab some after the event." Which means it's still running on French fuel.

In hindsight, spending money on fixing the air con was an utter waste of time, but it did make the trip to France more comfortable while it was working. I think it's now time to scratch a different itch though.

Get a payout from the AA then (but maybe dont push for megacoin unless their first offer is very offensive), offer bits up for spares for a bit more cash then either help with the 2cv resto or buy a cvt honda hrv use the AA money as your budget for another car!

Posted

The car still doesn't stand you a fortune, it was only £225 or whatever, plus a/c repair costs so it's a fair gamble with what you get at that price.

I guess a lot of car people have done a similar thing, part of the hobby I suppose!

Indeed. When you consider how much cheap chod has passed through my hands over the years, very little of it has caused much bother. Even the shittest of cars has generally kept working as a car. This is the first gearbox failure I've had since the 2CV shat its synchromesh back in about 2009. It also did it in 2007.

Thinking about it, the Rover has always grumbled a fair bit under load. I'd never quite managed to put my finger on what the problem was. I think I know now. Fair play to it for merrily buzzing along at 80mph for hours on French autoroutes!

When a lovely old lady wrote off my T5 for me, her insurance assessor went on Autotrader, took a sample from the bottom and the top prices for cars of a similar mileage and condition and made an offer at 75% of the top price. I snatched his hand off as the gearbox fault that he was unaware of, made it pretty worthless.

I imagine the AA will make a similar offer.

The couple of thousand miles it did with you meant the car's realistic life span had been fully used up in a useful cause. Sounds like economic, environmental and autoshite good sense to me.

Posted

it was cheaper than a week's car hire - and you'll be getting most of it back - that is pretty much a result!

It'll be fine if you've ran it for a bit without fluid up to the seal. Gearbox seals should be easy to replace (driveshaft removal job).

I ran my GSi with no fluid for a bit and all it did was whine until I filled it and fixed the seal and it was quiet again, you may have the same luck.

No, it won't be fine. When the chap called me back, he said he'd got bits of the differential on his desk. If someone fancies a project, I predict this will soon be available for many cheaps. You won't be driving it home though.

I feel partly responsible for this in a shite karma balance way . Yesterday I sold my 2 days before French holiday car purchase for twice what I paid for it.

Although today is also the anniversary of me spunking £5000 in the great 5 year old 530d cam chain fiasco, it's going to take a lot of £400 results to offset that, you win some you lose some.

I know what you mean about not building an attachment to 600s, the ex-FathaAngryDicky one that daughter no.2 abused ( without breaking the gearbox- just sayin') for 2 years, was only ever transport, I never once washed or polished it and never found myself doing silly little jobs or checking things like I do with pretty much all our other heaps.

What the fuck broke in it then? I thought was just the seal?

Posted

I've no idea. It was making a bloody horrible noise on the overrun as we approached Cholmondeley though.

Posted

Aye. Or enough play had developed that it jumped out of line as I pulled away. It was the nearside, so effectively the inside driveshaft as I made the turn. Would have been some force on it.

Posted

Sounds like the driveshaft seal has been the symptom of something more serious then but it's still a bit arse that the AA bent it as well to add to the misery. Sat in it at Chumley as we waited for them to appear and everything just felt Honda, like they didn't even bother to disguise it.
