First car wanted, Peugeot 205.

My youngest son has just passed his driving test and would really like a 3 door Peugeot 205 with the 1100 petrol engine for his first car, I was wondering if anybody about this parish might have one that might be available?

Congratulations to little straight six. that's not a bad call for a first motor.

Thanks for that, he does appreciate older cars and has already piloted my Triumph 2000 and loved it even though it's a heavy old beast with no power steering.....

Good choice, BS6jr.  Don't discount a 954 pez if one presents itself - no real world performance difference.

I would disagree there, I owned both at the same time and the 1.1 was much better. My 1.0 may have been knackered tho, but was my only car for 18 months and i loved it. Dunno what the insurance on a 1.4 is like for a young'un, but that'd be my choice.

EDIT: Should add that whatever the engine they are excellent cars, a 5-speed makes for better motorway use tho.

Great cars, be careful re insurance though - I've heard (could be utter b*llocks, mind) that getting insured as a young/first driver on a 205 is a bit steep these days.

Check out the insurance on them before buying. Small hatchbacks seem to be ridiculously expensive for new drivers so it's worth looking at something a bit bigger unless he really wants a 205. The old logic of insurance being proportional to performance and size doesn't seem to apply any more.

^ Good point.  And the diesel - though this is not relevant here - being relatively large at 1769cc doesn't help.  Puts it in the higher tax band too!

A 309 would be a less cool but very capable alternative, probably with rather cheaper insurance. And in 1.4 petrol form, they fly.

Insurance will be high because they're an old, easily stolen car, sadly.

Anyhow, I reckon your first port of call should be Krujoe or his bro, explosive-cabbage. They're usually in possession of a decent small Peugeot.

You can get Classic insurance for them ,which is very Cheap , A bloody good steering wheel lock is a must

If You get a 1600 , Get a late one as they have fuel injection and run much better

Mine is a Auto and has PAS ,central Locking and electric windows so feels quite modern even though its 21 Years old

Parts are easy to find and the Car is fun to drive , Plus Galvanised so don't really rot

These are a good choice for a new driver

I remember that on every 205 that has come up for sale on these pages, almost everyone had to say no because the insurance was too high (me included) and were not 17/18 either!

Deffo check out the insurance first if he's a young'un. My '08 Yaris was £1400 a year when I was 19 and that was by far the cheapest car I could find to insure, 80s/90s hatches were all £2k+...

The insurance on that GRD 205 was like £900. Nobody would take it on a classic policy as it wasn't a second car. Maybe there's loads of claims on gtis and it knocks on to all 205s.

As said, 205s are rather expensive to insure for their size. 306s are much cheaper but not really the same.

I've found smaller cars are lots more to insure than my xantia.

A google search for 'cars with cheap insurance for young drivers' indicates that >£900 is typical for the 17-25 bracket.  A few sites show Corsas as the most popular choice.  What a surprise.  No doubt having the suspension removed and fitting the wrong sized tyres to the rims further reduces the insurance.

My 205 automatic costs me the same as my Stellar within a couple of quid (£170 each) - Comp., 15,000 miles, inc. 10yrsNCB on each. The downside: I'm 66.

Anything considered "desirable" will get the insurance boys rubbing their sweaty palms together.

That's why my daughter will be getting an i10, Ignis or Sandero. ;)

Oh, and not that they can usually get it, but the last thing a kid wants is classic insurance... no NCD!

As said, a 309 might be a better choice insurance wise.

I'm fairly young (22) and I'm insuring a 309 1.9d for ~500. I expect a 205 to be more.

The insurance system is bonkers at best and doesn't seem to follow any form of logic. My 2.0 Mitsubishi 7 seater was over £200 cheaper to insure than an equivalent aged 1.4 Fiesta.

It makes sense when you think about it, I bet a much higher proportion of Fiestas are involved in expensive crashes than Space Wagons.
