removing abandoned cars.

Hi shits.

There's a communal council owned car park round the corner that has had a couple of cars abandoned in it for months. An N reg Corsa and a 55 plate pug 206. Both are wrecked, broken windows, flat tyres and both have had 14 day council removal notices stuck to the screens. Both notices have expired and two other notices have been stuck on explaining that the owners have 24 hrs before the cars are destroyed, these have also expired today.

As the cars are classed as abandoned and the owners have no interest in them, can I scoop em up to pull a few bits off and weigh in

I suspect I know the answer, but no harm in asking.

Apparently, but no.

Only if you don't tell anyone.

Who's going to know. Especially if you can swerve the weigh in id

Owner will assume council took them. Council will assume owner moved them.

I expect it is still technically theft though.

It is theft.

Can't you "borrow" what you need and leave the car there? Still theft but harder to prove.

I suspect the owners may well make themselves apparent as soon as slap the A frame on.

Calculate the value of the parts if you had to buy them and the value of the weigh-in and weigh it against the potential fallout if it all goes tits up.

A conviction for theft is enought to rule travel to the US on holiday for example.

Phone the council up and tell them you're going to save them some money by kindly removing said vehicle for them.  They may even say go for it.

If you wear a hi-viz jacket then I'm sure you'll be fine... :?

Maybe knock on a few doors to try locate the owners, and if succesfull offer them a fiver......

Do they prevent you on the visa or when you arrive? The reason I ask is that there is a local tosser who has been done for loads of stuff but regularly takes his kids to Florida on the proceeds. I presume he must lie on the visa application (do they even still do visas?)

Stick your own notice on saying , "unless told otherwise in 24hrs i'm gonna remove the fuel and cat from this here car"  :-D

Both ways.

The airline provides advance passenger information to the US border patrol and you can either be stopped at the point of entry in the US or quite often at the point of embarkation in the UK.

Edit; A quick check of some travel forms implies that unless the misdemeanour is high enough to warrant and international arrest warrent, then the Yanks won't have any access to the record.

He's definitely not declaring it and thus if anyone had an axe to grind.........

Looking up info on dumped cars the owners can be held liable for the costs associated with removing and disposing of the cars, so i'd probably be helping them out by getting shot of them! (maybe that's what i'll tell the rozzers)

pretty sure if you say "no" when the form asks if youre a crim then they have no way to find out , unless youre on some wanted list it would flag up when you try to leave the uk and mr plod should come and take you away

That is what I guessed, just wondered if they had access to plod data base. I know there are a lot of people who would like to get one back on him but probably just prefer a month when he isn't around. I have never had any problems personally but had to have a few stern words a few years back when he thought he could take the piss with the old lady next door. Irritating thing is he lives a mile away but our street is on his way back from the pub.

Sorry for thread hijack........

A criminal record for 50 quid's worth of junk?

No.

I guarantee the moment you slide your trolley jack under one of them some gorilla pumped up on test and happy joker will come over and make you wish you hadn't bothered.

Take a mate with a camcorder. If anyone rocks up, put on the pretence of being from the council, let them go ballistic for a bit until your mate jumps out and HA HA, you are the star of our new Internet Show! Well done! Give us your name and address and once we get over 50000 views you will get 20 percent of the ad revenue.

Then run away having given false names

Wouldn't be surprised if they're still on finance. HPI check anyone?

Can't see a wrecked N plate corsa being on finance.

Am I the only one here who finds this worrying?

I weighed one in this week and got ID checked, mind you he still paid me cash rather than cheque, it was in Scottish notes though and that's not even proper money is it  :-D

Posted

You don't need ID to weigh cars in if they're cut into pieces first, but the cutting discs and electricity would cost more than the scrap value of the metal

Unless you have a part in mind I wouldn't bother. The parts of either car you could take off would be practically worthless anyway. If they were in somewhere out of way like a lay by you might get away with it. In a communal car park you'll have every Nesbit in the street watching you.

Posted

I may just not bother then, just seemed a shame to have a pair of knackers round the corner going begging, it's not worth the potential aggro of having a pitbull weilding nutter or 4 police cars turning up to bust me.

the back axle off the 206, presuming it isn't 'tommy'tanked' is maybe worth the grief to 'have that away' - the entire 206 - useable 'non fucked' 206 back axle's here in Ireland, cant be got anywhere second hand or in breakers nowadays here; they've long since been bought up/used - theres a Polish who advertises on donedeal here for '206 rear axle reconditioning' for €300 exchange with your old axle ....

Posted

Not a job I'd want to be attempting in a car park though. What would you do with the shell with no axle? In any case you'd need the V5 to scrap the car, your only other options then are cut it into bits and skip it or shove it down a mine shaft.
