I love Granadas and have owned many, my first chauffeur job in 1982 was driving a 2.8 carb Ghia X UPD 26X,my first accident was when I was possibly just under 17 in my dad's company 2.0L DRK 28T.

By rights, I should be horrified by this, but I'd rather see them go out in a blaze of glory than sitting rotting in someone's garden waiting for 'I'm doing it up,when I get time'

Saying that , I couldn't help looking at the estates and hoping one of them wasn't ItalianJob's old one, bit close to his part of the world.

well i wouldnt want to be a back seat passenger in a nada estate

I don't think you're allowed passengers on the track. Or back seats :-)

Can't believe that people don't get hurt.  Seems total carnage.  There just can't be enough rough cars to fill that racetrack, some have to be decent ones.  It has all been said before.

A Granada wouldn't have a prayer against an old Mondeo or even a focus in a bang, for that reason I can't see why they persist with them?

I don't think they do, outside of special events like this. Every banger event I've been to (not many, admittedly) has been overwhelmingly Mondeo and other late 90s stuff.

Because Granada.

I enjoy a bit of banger racing viewing on YouTube now and then, doesn't bother me at all, regardless of make. What's more annoying is some twat who lets a good car rot in the drive with a 'not for sale' sign in the window for no good reason other than they are a miserable cunt.

raced* at a 'private' field banger event yesterday. passengers are encouraged  :-D

most i have seen is 8 in a people carrier or a packed 5 in a old swift!

nudge and spin though and driver only allowed in the DD at the end.

nothing particually esoteric mostly modern chod with the odd merc , bmw and 4wd celica.

brilliant day out though  8)

Nudge and spin is Prod Stock innit? Unlimited bangers is, as they say unlimited. Cant have passengers for that in my experience as you will end up flattened as someone mounts you.

I missed out on this. I went to the British Museum's annual book-burning instead (pre 1849).

There were some good first editions and published research manuscripts went up this year. Of course, some of it had to be imported from the Smithsonian Institute as there's a bit of a shortage over here now.

Good night out.

I'd actually go to that.

I was bored one night and went on you tube and watched a Jackie Collins hardback book be crushed by a hydraulic press - amazing.

The banger geezers who helped me out with some AMC bits were showing me some of their tweaks - they weld and/or bolt plates on in strategic places - one of 'em was a Granda fan and has a couple of "proper" immaculate ones that aren't going to get raced - but apparently the mk2 Granny is just about the best all round banger - mondeos aren't as tough and they crumple a bit easier (although they are reinforced for the track). They were a decent bunch, and I respected their guts for taking the shunts (it does hurt), their scrapyard engineering skills and having a laugh.

I'm not sure the museum analogy really applies, it's not like they are raiding Beaulieu or Gaydon.

The stuff I saw them prepping was neither rare nor desireable - and was a rotten as owt.

Much easier to weld some big fuck off plates into a rotten out Granny than spec one back up to road use. Depends on how mental you are I guess, I'd not banger race a patchwork car...

You'll probably find that many of these grannies had been "scrapped" years ago and have.been hanging around since then before finally making it to the track. Some had been purchased from Europe too as they are just too hard to find over here, hence the coke bottle coupes and 2 door saloons e.t.c. think there's much more to choose from over there, scrap wise.

Posted

Is there actually any racing or do they just all pile into each other on the first corner, clear the track, rinse repeat

I don't really know the format of banger racing but the vid looks to be cars just driving into each other full bore and writing them off on the first hit.

Posted

It's a race to the chequered flag, but you can try to win by stopping the opposition, of course many drivers just go out to crash...

A lot of the foreign cars were bought over and raced by the dutch etc. like these chaps at Standlake on the day after Ringwood.

Looks like they were all RHD, may have been converted for safety.

I get what you are saying about old Granadas being tough but they must be rotten as fuck so they can't hold up too well in a bang.

Posted

Wonder if Wayne Rooney was attending - He liked to bang an old Granny (apparently) :-)

Many rate them as the most overrated banger ever tbh, only raced because they were common as feck back in the day. Same with Cortinas.

I just don't 'get' it, I road raced for years and the idea was to get around the track to the finish over race distance, ideally at the front or as close to the front as possible.

It just seems a lot of time and expense to last a corner or two
