At what point does one have to inform insurance of...

the fact that you have JUST sent your licence to have 3 points added and paid £100 for the privilege?

Can I wait until renewal or do I wait til my licence comes back or do I have to do it now (tomorrow) ?

I'm guessing at renewal.

Well, hoping.....

I would do it asap. Seeing has it could be used to void any claims you hopefully don't have. If its an SP30 I had two in a week , so 6 points and it didn't affect my insurance at all.

Yes SP30.

On the A40 heading towards Monmouth, leaving the 50 mph zone in Pencraig, I started accelerating when I saw the NSL sign, and was clocked at 61. Unfortunately I was also done at 37 in a 30 in Runcorn before Christmas, and did the course already. So no excuse for muppetry.

Wife was convinced she might have been driving, but she only drove the short bit of the M50 and then we swapped over. I could have lied to her and convinced her it was she, as she has poor memory for stuff like that, but think I'd rather have 3 points than commit that crime.

I would do it now, if you need to claim between now and renewal they throw out the claim as informing them of any motoring 'offence' (or intended prosecution) is in the small print of all the policies I've ever taken the time to read.

When it happened to me I rang them as soon as I got the NIP, insurance company said they'd consider it at renewal, it either didn't affect the cost noticably or I went with someone else the next year anyway.

Funnily enough I got caught on the A40 between Ross and Monmouth too, on the hill just up from Ross towards Mon, there's a few corners at the top with a cafe on the left, was a camera van in a lay by. I was just getting past a HGV in the 50 zone at about 65mph when I was 'papped'.

I'd tell them. They'll use ANYTHING to get out of a claim. I don't blame them, if it was my business I'd do exactly the same. Fortunately most insurers tend to ignore 3pts or so, once it goes to 6pts+ they start imposing premiums

Fair play for taking it on the chin: admirable.

Chances are an SP30 will make √fuck all difference to your premium.  It's pretty much an occupational hazard, and so commonplace that I'd be surprised if your premium went up much at renewal.

Good luck man.

At renewal, no need to notify before then. It will not cause a problem if you had to make a claim

Gunning it when you can see the NSL sign used to be a viable option up until cars became able to do 40 to 60 in ten seconds rather than 30. :P

Now.

You could check your T&Cs rather than ask a bunch of faceless know-it-alls on the internet too.

My money is on any changes to details and they need to be done immediately.

I got 3pts years ago and when I told my insurer, the guy went "you mean you haven't 3pts already, lololol I thought everyone did LOL kthanxbai" and my premium went down the following year....so...?

The village is Pencraig. The 50 zone is because of the dangerous junctions across the dual carriage way and because of the diner/café. I was doing 50 at that point, and joked that it was the first time I'd seen the café open. Once the Danger of the junction area was over I applied the normal risk assessment of "is there any danger to me in going faster than I am, and oh there's the NSL sign, so may as well crack on now".

TBH I'd been "cracking on" before my wife took the wheel, and I wanted to make up for her not actually achieving 70 mph on the motorway. despite a clear road, so once into the NSL I may "Cracked on" properly. So probably lucky in the 61 in a 50 NIP, and not something in the 70.

Snap - my own SP 30 error happened here too!

And tell insurance immediately as with all "changes". They won't do anything most likely but you will have signed something committing you to telling them of such matters.

Indeed. If you are going to commit such an offence, agree that whatever happens, you'll never EVER tell anyone else what you did.

Having jokingly told my daughter, that I could have lied to her mother, but I didn't think I could trust either of them (she was in the car too) to never mention it ever again, she informed me that when I last got points in 2011, one of her school friends mentioned that her mother had taken 2 lots of 3 points for her dad.

Pod you is criminal

When we where all young fresh drivers one lad who was a spoiled brat had a clean licence even after many speeding tickets,

Plenty of my friends had points though even the ones that couldn't afford a car.

just down the road and a favourite spot for the man in a white van with a hairdryer - normally north / east bound to catch the unsuspecting Welsh!
