1988 Audi 90 2.2 E - For Sale

Never owned a 90, but had a couple of Passat GL5's which I believe are the same engine.

Loved that car and assume the engine gearbox combo will be the same.

Still think the gearbox on that Passat was one of the nicest manual's I've ever driven.

Sold the first and the second was written off.

Now goes off to look at 90's as did not realise that you could get this engine in them.

Really nice car by the way,

Well bought Trigger, just like the one my dad had back in the early 90's.

That fan looks exactly the same fan that's fitted to R5 Turbo's and Alpine GTA/A610 which runs after the engine is turned off to cool the turbo. Might be another option if you do decide to replace it. I believe you can try to oil the bearings but it's a bit of a faff.

Nice find as you don't see many around anymore,

Now you have made me want to get back onto sorting my 90 which keeps getting bumped back down the list.

I think you done triffic there, Trig. Love that inline-5 warble.

I knew the word warble/warbling would come up at some point when describing the 5-cyl engine :-)

Looks great.

I'm pleased to see it's gone down well on here, it's my first classic Audi and 5 cylinder so it's all a bit of a new learning curve, if I get these few little jobs sorted then it will make a perfectly capable daily driver.

I really must sort out this ticking sound as it's ruining that lovely sound, I don't know if it's a hard thing to fix though.

I had your cars dad for a while, loved it. Makes me sad what Audi have become. Anything with a 5 cyl lump is teh bollocks in my book, and I think I've owned them all. Audi,VW and Mercedes. Any more??

I'll never make it in journalism, will I? Using "warble" in that context is akin to "offbeat thrum" of a Subaru, or "buffoon" of Boris Johnson.

Fiat Marea/Coupe. I had a Marea as a company car for a few months back in the '90s, interesting car but I'm glad I didn't have to pay for fuel (or pay for the inevitable bills). Sounded great though, which is all that matters.

Tick and tick. Fail on the Safrane though, but it's just a Volvo engine anyway, as is a Fraud Focus

Damn nice car! Well bought.

Until I find the motorshow cutaway video.

Just link the matchbox video:

The ticking might be a cracked manifold.

My friend said that too but you can't see to tell. Are they even available to replace?!

Posted

If it has cracked in the usual place around the studs you could get away with having it resurfaced.

I've seen some welded repairs with mixed results.

A good used one would be the cheapest option. There are some aftermarket tubular ones that appear from time to time.

Forgot to mention, because you weren't asking about the turbo charged version of this engine, many years ago I also had a couple of Audi 200T, and they didn't so much warble as wuffle.

A spectacular sound and one that will stay with me.

Yes. But usually the studs will be torn off due to heat around this area. I had the luck of having both, manifold cracked and studs...

Was lucky to find an intact VW KX manifold on the scrappy.

Mine turned out to be cracked fannymould, only realised when I saw it on eBay a year after I sold it sporting a heat wrapped tubular one. Advert mentioned it had been replaced. That's what happens when you insist on test driving a car when I've just thrashed home from work because you couldn't wait til the morning.

I hope it's not a cracked manifold as there is a good chance your nuts will look like this,

I'm really dreading this whole manifold issue, I haven't a clue what a job like that will cost to fix or where abouts to get the parts, I know the car was cheap but once I've paid to fix that and replace the front shocks, drop links and possibly rear wishbone bushes it won't be such a cheap car any more.

I think these would shift rounded manifold bolts.

or maybe one of these, though it's probably a bit bulky for that application.

When in doubt and everything is disassembled, do all the studs and the gasket and enjoy silence for a long time, once done, forever peace. Quite accessible once injection and intake manifold is out of the way.

You can use all 2-flow manifolds for a replacement, look for KV, KX, JS and NG, NO quattro, these are 3-flow.

I'm going to speak to mechanic and see if he'll give me a idea how much to fix the manifold, hopefully it can be welded if it is cracked?

In other news I spent the after doing a few jobs on it, got the interior cleaned, it's. Very tidy other than being a bit dusty, I need to find why the radio is constantly on unless I take the front off...

I also stripped the boot out to find this leak, turns out it's coming from the air vent behind the bumper, the top flap has fell off so I pulled the bumper back and gaffer tapped it up, it's slowed it up but it still seems to be weeping in?.

post-3625-145918917505_thumb.jpg

I then had all the wheels off the check the brakes, they all seems good with new pads all round and a couple of new calipers, as said above it will need new front shocks and drop links though, I also tided up a few scabby bits behind the rear arches.

post-3625-14591892663_thumb.jpg

After that I mopped up the badly painted front wing and the boot lid which looked a bit matt, both have responded well so I recokon it should look good once I've finished.

So that's it for now, I've ordered up some new plugs, leads and filters so I'll get that sorted next.

Now I see it as it says 2.2E, this is the catless equivalent to the KX with 115hp, Germany only had them with cat and without badges or as 2.3E. Exhaust system is the same anyway.

I bought those irwin nut remover thingys and they don't work on mine as the nut doesn't even have flat sides anymore,

That pic I posted is the very front nut and is the only one I can get a pic of, if yours still looks like a nut should look then it should be a doddle,

Thank you! I think this is 136bhp? It certainly goes well.

Just seen this, very nice looking 90! The engine will be (is) the 136bhp/100kw KV engine (both my 90s are so equipped). I love this engine and have found it generally bomb proof, my 90 quattro is now 200,000 miles plus and uses very little oil, great noise too!!

That fan that runs on after switch off is supposed to cool the injectors down to prevent "vapour lock" - it wasnt working on either of mine when I got them and havent noticed any difference once fixed... The ducting is very brittle im not even sure any of the air goes where its supposed to either!

Over the leak, have you defo ruled out the back lamp? Where the jack screws in behind the lamp there is a round hole (in some export markets there is a marker lamp fitted here). There should be a rubber bung in the hole - if not its possible water may be running through from outside behind the lamp down to the vent you have identified...

Radio wise the loom only has a permanent live as standard, looks like someone has looped it round to connect the switched / permanent live inputs in the plug together - radio will be permanently on in this case. You can pull a switched live from under the steering wheel (square yellow connector) to allow it to turn off with the key? The buzzer is normal, can get a bit iffy with age - mine sometimes remembers to operate a couple of seconds after it should!!!

Some additional info from the 90 owners manual - may help you with the radio:

From memory there are also 2 white wires which power the antenna booster for the integral aerial in the rear screen (the top 2 filaments).
