How do you justify running more than one car (for yourself)...

As long as you have somewhere to park/garage them...don't worry. Shop around for a classic car multi-policy, juggle your SORN/Tax (the new refund system really helps) and relax. I have amongst my collection a couple of £250 cars so I'm spending very little. The annual miles are minimal so MOT time is not too terrible. Enjoy shopping around for the off-beat and crazy - there is so much out there.

I tend to buy at the bottom of the desirability bell-curve, so the value of most of the vehicles in my fleet has increased substantially since I bought them.

This is in my thought process when buying cars, but they appear to stay at the bottom of the curve whilst I have them and until after I sell them :(

I do it quietly, when she is in the other room.

Currently up to 5 which apparently is too many - for reasons that arent clear! Even though we have parking and 4 up the front.

All MOT'd with 4 insured, although 1 will be left in scotland, 2 will be sold.

I just buy whatever I want because I want it! It's that simple! I love old cars and enjoy working on them and driving them.

I don't have anything else in life to spend time on or enjoy, and going to work is a misery too so I'll spend my time and hard earned money on something that makes me happy. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else there's no problem is there?

Classic insurance helps, hoping to put my daily on same classic policy now we have an 'modern' 2002 new daily coming!

Selling a heap as I'm not getting round to to it.

So:

1.WaG Daily 'modern'

2. 80's classic family rustwagon - summer tax only this year

3. 90's french oil burner - classic banger

4. Forgotten serious project

5. For sale heap.

The point about not explaing yourself is a good one - it is surprising how much disapproval old cars attract. My whole collection would not cost as much as a 5 year old Hinbari Spangletop.

I lie awake at night sometimes worrying about having 2 cars, I am sure if I had 3 or 4 I would sleep a lot better !

Only one of my cars isn't justified really. We have 5 altogether, 3 mine and 2 belonging to wifey.

07 Honda Civic - justified as her/the daily runner and the only one with the baby seat fitted.

'60 Austin Seven Mini - justified as it was her wedding present so can never go. Her hobby car.

My Stiletto was my grandparents car from new so can never really go. My hobby car.

My Imp Van - the only thing we really have for any sort of load carrying. Big garden so I do loads of tip runs in it. (Plus I love it and use it almost every day).

Elise Sport160 - hidden at the back of the garage hoping the wife doesn't see it. 2 seats so totally impractical for us now we have the baby.

One of the main reasons I picked the house we're in was because it has a huge garage. At one point I had 4 Imps in there (before she moved in), but now i'm down to 2 Imps so the Lotus and the Mini are in there instead, along with the remaining 2 Imps. It can take 6 cars at a push, but that involves skids and a general ball-ache. We have 2 rows nose-to-tail currently, but it varies quite a bit.

The Honda lives outside.

I've got two because they're different kinds of car. The Mercedes is a huge, handy automatic diesel holdall, the Impreza is a small manual lunatic holdall.

Both are insured, taxed and MOTd.

What Cav said. I just like cars. The Boomerang Volvo is on a SORN cos it needs welded, mind, and I got shot of the Bini I got for my (ex) girlfriend. Was hardly worth the bother. That said, they aren't half easy to sell.

It's about having some redundancy, we currently have 3 cars between 2 drivers meaning that 1 can be off the road for repairs or maintenance at any given time without drama.

Luckily wife_dink understands that I just like cars, but if I did have to justify myself the above line is what I would go for.

I lump both my Morrises together as one car.   Insurance was an extra tenner for the second one, only one needs MOT and neither need taxing.   They rotate between a car port at home and one rented lock up.    Lots of parts are common meaning less hoarding of parts required and I do my own routine maintenance.

The Merc belongs to Mrs Rocker and costs a lot less than a modern car each would.   It is kept tip top so we can take it anywhere and is the main mile-muncher for trips to London, up North, Devon and Cornwall and the East Coast.

Finally, the damper van of despair.   If all I do is take it down the local beach on my summer days off it still represents about a quarter of the cost of a beach hut.  It provides a spare vehicle, load lugger, overnight accomodation and a comfortable base for rock and roll music weekenders.

I probably couldn't justify a fifth vehicle, though, so I replaced the Farina we had with a folding plastic 70s caravan.

I have 3 vehicles, 2 of which I keep at work and then I swap around when I feel like it.

My justification? Just to confuse the neighbours.

Most of my cars have appreciated in value, the jags and the Thames vans will be worth quite a lot in a few years and the others although more common are appreciating too.

My wife spends more on wine and food than I do on the car.

I relay this to her by simple blunt man maths occasionally, it goes something like:

"At least the cars are worth something, you waste money on stuff that gets pissed or shit out the next morning, we can have a nice day out in the car but your braised beef and chateau Neuf du pape are a distant memory"

She then complains that 'I'm always going on at her'

And then matrimonial bliss recommences

One Man's hobby is another man's mental illness.

It was once said by a biker's wife to her husband "How many motorbikes is enough?" to which he replied "one more than I have now"

We have 3 cars, one is my get to work low depreciating, fairly economical, easy to fix petrol mk4 astra, which I've done 10K since September. I would prefer to have bought something faster, more complex, more in keeping with my status in the world, except that autoshite has reminded me that I should give not a stuff what anyone thinks.

One is my wife's Bini, which doesn't do massive miles, but which gets a lot of people jealous (cause it's yellow with a black roof perhaps), despite that it's 14 plus years old.

And the old slow MX5 which technically is my wife's car as well. It's great, because in the summer, we will insure daughter for 10 weeks on the BINI, wife will have the astra and I get the Mx5. Yeah !!

And it's great. When one car is not available, there is always a spare.

The MX5 costs up about £11 a week to own. I don't go to Costa twice a day like some people I work with, hence I believe it is a FREE car.

Currently 6 and 2 halves

No Justification - it's an adiction and the meds don't work

The camper costs bugger all to keep and get lots of use in the summer, the mrs' 4x4 is for towing the horsebox, the Golf is the daily and the Beetle project... that one will be for the mrs when completed!

I don't need to justify them to anyone really, the mrs' hobby costs far more than mine!

My dads mate loves ducati's he has had 748,916,996 etc and he always buys red ones

The reason is.... He owned a few and his wife just knew he rode a red Ducati, she hadn't twigged he had more than one

3 Cars, 1 bike, all operational. (Plus 1/10th of a Cessna 150).

Justification?  Don't need one, blissfully single so only have to answer to myself as I'm paying the bills.

When in a relationship - same thing really, I don't question madam's number of shoes, unworn outfits, handbags etc. so kindly return the favour.

I don't, and I've 4 cars...

would use the 'It's a spare' but in the case of the Crappo & Civic Aerodeck, Both have sat at the parents house for 5 & 17 month's retrospectively and can't bring myself to sell them... for the right price, they are up for sale.

The Cappo because I can't bring myself to see it being sold on eBay for 'Spares or repairs' few days later. And the Civic Aerodeck? Well she's myself car, and like they "you'll always have a thing for your first". And the fact it's somewhat "#StanceYo" thanks to the coilovers and Alloys.

The other two?

The LS400 which is a keeper, but due to space is in a friends barn about 50 miles away making it a bit of a logistical nightmare if I want access to it, but can be used as a spare if needed. Buuut should't have to be needed due to the fact I got a new-new Abarth 595 last month...but being Italian it's handy toi keep the Lexus at hand.  :-D

Honda Civic - Required as daily transport.

Dolomite 1300 - My first "classic" car and first car I bought cash and owned outright. I can hardly sell that, it's a milestone vehicle...

Dolomite 1850HL - In theory it's supposed to be a fun car to throw around country lanes but in reality it's rather broken...

If I had more money I'd buy a Rover 2000, I have a problem... Of course money dictates that, generally, only two cars are every roadworthy at any given time, currently only the Honda is working although the 1300 is taxed and insured it's out of MOT.

I don't need to justify it. I like cars, whether driving or tinkering with them and therefore that keeps me happy. If I'm happy, she's happy!

Cars are also the hobby that allows me to de-stress after a shitty week at work. That is, of course until I come across that stubborn bolt that needs lots of sweating as motivation to move.

I've got two cars - both 1960s. I did have just the one for many years, but parts are finally getting harder to find off the shelf and increasingly stuff needs to be taken off and reconditioned. That can leave the car off the road for a couple of weeks. I got the second one so they can share daily duties - no pressure to keep one tip-top and running. I did look at finally giving in and getting a modern, but I figured if the Anglia was working I'd probably drive that anyway and the modern would just sit there unused most of the time, losing me money in depreciation. I just got another old one instead.

The Volvo & MG are very different,so that's good enough reason for me.I normally use the MG all week,& Volvo at weekends but I haven't sorted out the overheating on the MG yet so been using the Volvo all the time. The Fiat has been off the road for about 8 years so really should go this year. Then there's Miss_155's Peugeot 307,I see that in the same way they have a car no-one likes following them around in case someone breaks down in the Top Gear challenges
