Volvo 480ES En-Route

I think I've gone and 'bought' a 480ES 1.7. It's a runner and MOT'ed with the info display fully operational. Needs a bit of work on the body but not too bad. Will know more by Friday as I'm trying to get it for free off a family member. This is the actual car. : )

Ooooo. I can vouch for the 1.7 albeit in auto flavour being a quiet nippy yet economical motor in my 440

I've somehow not bought one of these despite always being a fan of them. I was tempted by the poorly cox 480 when it was on offer here. I assume a pez station collection shot may not be happening if the car is fairly local?

Boom, love a 480, kinda like a posh lady in a shellsuit. Well to do insode, trendy outer shell...

I had one years ago, L232YNX. We took it on honeymoon, it was a cracking car. Then we got a Basset hound so swapped for a Xantia as we needed more space.

There's always look best in black with red coachlines, what year is it as it looks like a early one?.

They go quite well but don't half rattle and squeak inside with cheap nasty plastics, still for the princely sum of free you can't grumble at all!

As a swap or was there money either way, for the wife I mean....

I really enjoyed the one I bought from Dugong. Not the fastest thing around, but went well enough and was ace on fuel. Electrics were a bit, erm, temperamental!

I really like these, I looked at getting one as my first car years ago but unbelievably it was cheaper to insure a Corolla GT so that's what I got instead! Both very thin on the ground now. If it's leaking into the boot, it'll probably be the rear lights - they also go cloudy and need refurbing with thinners.

Look forward to seeing more pics!

A couple of things that really stick out to me was how ridiculously torquey the 2.0 8v engine was in mine. It had fairly skinny tyres, which were a few rungs above ditch-finders, and would love scrabbling away in 3rd gear if it was a bit greasy.

Apparently you can break into one in a matter of seconds using a coat hanger.

Never did less than 30mpg, and would do 40mpg on a run.

I can't best getting one for £free but mine was £550 to buy and £550 when I sold it 13 months later. The best value for money I've had out of any car, ever.

Cheers for the epic feedback!!! I've landed a hell of a deal on it but my brother in law landed a free '98 323i saloon so he's kind of returning the good karma. And it need a bit of wob removing in the rear arches which he can't be arsed to pay for. Can I sort the rear lights with just thinners or do I need to try a plastic lacquer? I found this link but not sure of the actual application process of the two part lacquer. Does he use a brush or roller? I can't imagine he's spraying it on if it's a two part mixing process?

Will be good to be back in a Volvo. I had a brown 345GL CVT which was just mental and so fast in reverse and lots of fun properly sideways in the snow. The constant revs did my tits in though. Dad had a JRG 264GLE and a 265GLE as new company cars when I was a kid. Loved them!

That's given me a bit of movement, need to get me one of these sweet little things

Are you me?!

I had an L reg that we took on honeymoon to France. Unfortunately I wrote it off in Annecy and had to hire a polo for the remainder of the holiday. Xantia came. Couple of years later though.

The red auto?

Don't know if it's auto or manual to be honest, i've not checked but for £260 i'm not to bothered either way. It is red though, i know that much.........

Picking it up tomorrow night.

edit: yeah it's auto, quick wiki suggests it could be either a CVT or an HTA (high tech auto) an electronically assisted CVT...... bet that's going to be a paragon of reliability.

Took a bit longer that I thought, but it's finally mine!!! : ) £200 with 6 months MOT...,

Booked in to get the paint sorted at end of June and loads done engine and chassis wise.

Bloody good fun to drive but a big baggy, reckon it's the shite tyres more than anything.

Had one a few years ago and loved it! I would have kept it despite the odd electrical issue and the fact that the drive was less sporting than the style suggests, it was such a nice place to be and so solid. In fact mine saved my life but died taking the impact of the tree when a truck decided to overtake a stationary tanker and failed to see a bright red 480. The blind twat even failed to stop for a few miles until a witness pulled him over.

So no Volvo, just memories and a buggered back. But this thread has got me pining for another.
