Vectra SRi 2.2 Litre Beater £150

I hated these Vectras from new. I wanted to like them as the Mk3 Cav wasn't a bad thing but the Vectra ain't good.

Exactly! The Mk3 Cav was a bit of an insipid drive but always count on them. I ignored the Clarkson opinion and was happy to give one the benefit of the doubt hoping that it'd be like a new, improved Cav but other than the straight line speed, which is about the only thing I'll concede is better than the 1.8 Mondeo, it was a joyless shitbox devoid of any real merit.

they all got that stupid centre armrest which is in exactly the wrong place

Poxy thing is really irritating. I tried removing it at the weekend but gave up before I lost patience and took a hammer to it. I generally don't see the point in centre arm rests anyway.

I do like it, but I want it to sell so I can buy another Mk3 Cavalier. So there's progress for you!

You've never experienced shitty centre armrests until you've sampled a B5 Passat.

Centre armrests make a car for me.

This. I'm now so used to having centre armrests in a car if I get into one without one, as a driver, my head nearly ends up on the passenger's lap.

Posted

I'm tempted by this as I could really do with buying a car this weekend, but my insurance wants to bum rape me. £73 a month for a £350 Vectra does not compute.

Still cheaper than getting an Edam or whatever and getting bum raped by Vauxhall themselves every month - look at it that way.

I'm paying £42 a month with Surething, so maybe give them a go?  That's with zero NCB too as I've been running classic policies for so long now I lost the one I had.

LOL. I'm a big fan of centre armrests in general. It's just the Vectra one is horrific. It's a design cock-up on a par with the Zafira fag-lighter / handbrake / cupholder and the Pug 604 curry hook (rhd)

What's that?  Do they all foul each other or something?

The fold away cupholders in the Vectra are ludicrously shallow and don't protrude from the dash enough, so the rep 'on the go' is likely to spill his grande mochasinno latte all too easily.  I can see how back in the day details like that could do your head in, whereas Mondeo man got a much better set up!

Zafira Mk2. If you can charge your phone, stash a brew and release the handbrake without breaking or spilling something, you're doing well.

it's a better car than a Laguna Mk2. GLWS etc

To be fair though..........

I had one, and it was rubbish. But it was a 1997 and the facelift ones were vastly better.  A matte has a a Y plate 2.0i Sri Estate and it's been really good. The Vectra also has a massive, massive boot. I once sold an M43 (318i) engine and the guy came to pick it up in a Veccy. It went in the boot and the tailgate shut along with the rear parcel shelf. Impressive. Whilst the 'Deo was arguably a better car when new, they're minging now whilst a clean late SRi still seems to be a respectable car.

You can get an adults road bike in a Corsa without taking the (bike) wheels off.

You can't get a dugong in a Corsa.

You mean he's got standards?

....officer, I swear that's what I was doing in the lay-by.

I'm happy for a trusted shiter to take this on a pay half now the rest later basis, if it saves me ebaying it. I'm good at the buying cars lark, less so at selling!

Posted

I'm the same. Selling is a pain! Especially with the inevitable goons that will plague you selling a sub-500 quidder.

Posted

If you have this in 2 months time.........those terms would be perfect.

Posted

Could do with selling it before then TBH Ken, as unlike the older stuff this is costing me 67 quid in tax and insurance each month (for something I hardly use). I'm off to the Peak District next week so may take it for a final bit of road trip fun before ebaying it.

Fair do's mate. You may not want to sell it after hooning around the LD ;)

I've tried selling this on gumtree recently, and even at 200 quid I barely had any interest. I thought the SRi-ness might make it a touch more desirable, but no.

So would anyone like it for £150?

There's still a knock from the OS front despite replacing the droplinks, and both front windows will need jiggering about with. The driver's one works but needs manual assistance to seat properly, and the other only opens a few inches. It also has a tendency to keep the revs high when changing gear, especially in the lower ratios, but all I do is adjust my driving style so I'm not rushing it. Plenty of poke means there's no need to rush anyway.

I had a cracking time using this on my recent Peak District road trip, but I need to cut down my fleet.

A few pics.

Here's a bonus photo of it next to my mate's Lancia Delta 1300 LX
