Autoshite trip to the ring

So why I am posting this here rather than Pistionheads I hear you ask? Well me and a couple of mates are doing it the autoshite way. We are buying performance motor £1500 max and from Friday to Monday (dates to be determined) driving down and round the ring a few times and back and selling it when we get home.

As I will be organising channel tunnel and accommodation, if anyone fancies joining us I don't mind sorting all this out.

I realise a trip to the ring, most probably in an impreza with a massive exhaust, is about as chavtastic as it comes but I assure you we are quite "normal" :blink2:

I am doing this because

  1. I love a good road trip,
  2. Driving on the continent is ace
  3. Germany is more acerer
  4. I have always want to drive around the ring.
  5. Doing it in convoy will be even better!

If anyone is interested I will keep this thread up to date!

If anyone has a car which may fit the bill give me a yell!

We dont, it was just planned this way to keep the costs down.

And I have already been warned if it is a chav mobile it isn't even allowed on the drive! ha!

I nearly did this with the Project Puma forum when I had the Puma. Was quite up for it, until I read about the fucking bum rapey costs for crashing on the ring, then getting it home afterwards.

Plus the way the ZX leaks the water will be up to the windows after driving to germany and back

And my passport expired last year...

Good luck!

surely the autoshite way is to register the car to a mystery person, or po box address, so if you do smash it, you can just leave it there.

^ This.

Have you seen how much it costs to replace any armco, etc. if you do have an 'off'?

Yes, but you are a long time dead.

Or bankrupt I suppose!

I am already pretty much both of those....

Like a reverse roffle, just do the draw and sign the V5 before you go and hand the keys over afterwards...

Of course that will only affect the shitters who drive trucks so not much to worry about with our oldys.

Surely the Autoshite way is to take a diesel Nissan Bluebird, go really slow and not crash?

You can get 'ring specific trackday insurance. I wouldnt go without it.

If you do crash.....

Armco damage; basic charge 150 euros

removal and replacement of armco is 50euros per meter, if its double height or triple height sections its double or triple cost.

New posts are 40 each.

And the real sore ones are safety car attendance is about 150 per hour and if the track has to be closed during recovery or repair its something like 1500 euros per hour.

Plus VAT.

Trouble is trackday insurance is only valid on track days which in themselves cost £££ and there are only a handful per year. The usual Touristenfahrten days the road is classed as a normal highway and track day insurance isnt valid.

Just make sure you only have a nice light crash and drive off quickly. It's what most people seem to do now

Just don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine. I took my £500 MX-5 last year with a few mates. It was very wet, the clutch was slipping and I had shit tyres. The whole experience was brilliant, but I treated it like a wet B-road rather than a race track.

Everyone else in my group hired Swifts at silly money per lap, plus a â‚¬5,000 excess.

Tempted to take the Metro for lolz...

Like I said, you can get specific ring insurance which does cover you no matter if its an open day, track session or whatever.

The Council Estate won't even break traction in snow let alone go sideways so sounds good to me.

I did it in a £500 Mercedes w126.

You are spending at least £1000 too much.

My car and my friends car were the most shite there by a considerable margin.

Did it in 2014 in my old E30. Easily one of the best experiences of my life so far. It would be great in any car, most other vehicles will be overtaking unless you really know what you're doing. Crashing is best avoided, my mate went through the armco in his clio a few years ago and the total bill was about £8000 including getting the scrap car home.

Fooking hell, 8K!

I'm interested!

a) I fancy a road trip this year

B) Back when I first started work on the Stellar my plan was to take it to the 'Ring (back when it was €6 a lap!)

c) Why not?

It's hardly a performance machine, so I'd just treat it like any other road...I seem to have lost the desire for high speeds as I've got older. Flat out acceleration is still fun though!

Surely if it's classed as a normal highway then your normal insurance should be valid?

My UK road policies in later years all had a line in the small print specifically excluding the ring.

Used to go 2-3 times a year from 1999 up till 2006 ish. Would only go on a private trackday now (not touristenfahrten), 'cos:

  • If you go when it's open for 2-3 full public days, it's mental busy - Like, "queuing for 10 minutes to get off the track" busy. Or "queuing from the roundabout at the entrance halfway back to Nurburg to even get into the carpark" busy.
  • Mental busy = crash-fest = "Die Strecke ist geschlossen!!" tannoys every hour, and abject lunacy when they do finally open the gates again.
  • There's gaggles of badly driven modern hot hatches blezzing round, at the mercy of their DSC / ESR / TC / OMFG electronic safety nets and demonstrating BTCC levels of aggression
  • The insurance issue - Your UK policy doesn't cover you on the Nordschleife. (Well, it actually does - third party only - as mandated by EU law). The problem is, if your ambition exceeds your ability, and you hit a local in their €60k Porker 911, your insurer will be obliged to pay up. They'll then probably come after you back in the UK with a civil case, to recover their losses.
  • Third party vehicular / armco damage is one thing, but imagine you head over in an old shed, give it lots of 'rough love' and drop half the contents of your sump on the entrance to Schwedenkreuz (100 mph corner) when your engine expires. A poor unsuspecting biker is next to arrive on the scene, and your oil slick leads to their untimely demise. Not only do you feel somewhat bad morally about the whole situation, the legal side of things (criminal prosecution / litigation from the family) would probably also be rather unpleasant.

Don't get me wrong - On the right day / in the right conditions / in just about any car it's about as much fun as you have with your trousers on - Just go into it fully aware of the consequences if things don't go as planned.

I was getting insurance quotes for this year today and read it several times in various policy docs, specifically says nordscliff (sp)

If my mk1 sierra was finished I'd be up for something like this but I don't know when it will be done

Surely the shite way of doing this would be to drive round the Leeds ring road all night because you weren't paying attention at J43 of the M1?
