Bloody Big Bad Benz is the Bloody Biggest Piece of Tosh

The only remaining electrical issues are the fan and heater, which we already knew about.

You forgot the frequent sudden loss of all the electrical loads switched via the ignition switch when you drive it.

My 230TE fell off its similarly deadly jack while I was changing a rear wheel.

Good news! I have found another CD. I knew I had one somewhere.

Well I've just been for a drive with high electrical load (lights, wipers, Ambros) and everything worked perfectly, so fingers crossed it's cured.

Now the bad news - the starter has been unenthused about starting the engine the last couple of times. It wasn't a lack of electricity, it span away like a mad thing but it wasn't actually engaging. After quite a long time of this, it caught and started.

I knew that the later W124, especially the 500E/E500 had the problem with the complete wiring (Kabelbaum) becoming brittle and starts to decay because of the engine-heat in the engine-bay.

But I did not know that W124 Diesel may have similar issues...

I'm kinda new here. Love these cars. Sometimes they can be shite, yes, but most of the time they are flippin' great.

I've got one, mostly it's shite.

Carry on.

It was the multivalve models (16,20,24) which had underbonnet wiring probs, afaik. They were worse in many areas but better on fuel above the ton. I doubt these are in-built problems by the manufacturer, rather ancient cheap chod probs and possibly some iffy repairs in West Yorkshire.

Weak batteries can cause all sorts of electrical probs, even if the alternator is charging ok. Perhaps worth a drop test? Could well be worth a call to the last owner too. He could have already been through all of this half a dozen times and give you a head start.

Worth chocking the opposite wheel, then?

Nah, that would mean following the instructions in the owner's manual.

No real man has ever done that.

The Borked Big Bad Benz now sits in some street near Manchester with a buggered starter.

Who said these are supposed to be good cars?

So far it's been incredibly shit.

1.34 million Berlin taxi drivers.Maybe it's because it's not beige.

Funny innit? My KV6 powered* Sterling is supposed to be a head gasket munching shit house. So far, it's still starts, goes and keeps on going despite; busted radiator which pisses water out like a waterfall, dubious head gasket, belts and waterpump history, crispy sills, no service etc....

So in return, I shan't give up on it. Fairs fair? Or maybe we are the exceptions?

Maybe it's been round the clock? Or just doesn't like damp British weather. Did that battery check out ok?

^WHS. Re: battery.

On the up side, with some other makes, that would be a puddle of LHM.

There is that slight question of why you bought it, even when you have had bad experience of MBs before?

Because German cars are reliable* and never* break down.

This is AS, man :

Autoshitter sees car for sale, asks fellow 'shitters for their view.

"They're the worst car ever made, horrible to drive and massively unreliable."

Autoshitter has to find out for himself, buys car.

Three months later, he has spent over £1000 on parts and has been busy fixing the thing every single weekend. The car has yet to complete a journey without an AA callout.

Autoshitter gets fed up, sells/raffles/scraps the car.

A year down the line, Autoshitter has forgotten how bad the car was. Decides that they can't be that bad, buys another.

GOTO 10 etc.

I find it sad that a thread full of hope and optimism has descended into something that would have even Leonard Cohen reaching for the paracetemol.

It is an E reg merc - how many mercs, granadas and senators of that vintage are still knocking about.

None.

A brand new diesel audi could have shit it's kecks like this.

Most of these appear to be in my garden...

Anyway, after £135.00, a starter and numerous fuel pipes change, it's yet doing again what is commonly referred to as 'running',

but in this case it's actually more like just about not being stationary.

I don't think this has a long and bright future here.
