Confused Clio. An introduction.

Yes.... An electric motor compresses oil , an accummulator (looks like Cit sphere) holds pressure.

 

It first cranks up when door opens (rhd/lhd loom..lols) and will tickle as you go along. Motor will wear out - brushes can be done!!!

 

Cylinder seals, for change ram, wither away and soon after all the oil.

 

Selespeed parts interchangeable.... Gahhh££££££

I remember that clio immobiliser! A mate of mine had a mk1 clio, and we had a spot of bother with some chav wankers... To get a quick getaway he had to plip the plipper twice to start the car, then outrun the hooligans.

Yup! If you don't start the car within a minute of unlocking it, you've got to double plip again to deactivate it. Particularly funny in the Safrane when the voice synthesiser tells you the engine is electronically locked and it's impossible to start!

This setup in the first A-Class meant you could drive as if the car was a massive, tall, slow go-kart with appalling understeer.

 

Right foot to go, left foot to stop, hold on tight and prepare yourself to go straight on at the next corner.

Same idea as the old Routemasters.

Use the column change and lift off the accelerator to change except if you put it into 4th then it acted as a normal autobox

Other wonderful vehicles with a clutchless manual include the Chieftain tank that uses a motorbike style gear shift for your left foot but no clutch.

 

The only instrumentation that I remembered for the driver on the one that I drove was the indicator that told you which gear you were in.

So then.... This Clio has a 5+R knob but (so I seem to understand) changes are tip> for UP & <tip for DOWN.

LEFT reverse.... and wiggle for NEUTRAL.

QS5* have a hud style display showing the gear yrr in ???

Why the 'manual cogs knob' I wonder ???

Yes you could drive it on an Auto only licence as I got a Teflon-only licence from Arriva

There was a phase 1 Twingo which worked the same way, Twingo 'easy'. :)

How slow do you have to change gear to avoid the beeping/crunch? Drive like a nun on Valium or is any sort of spirited changing possible?

stupid question though, on that pic of the dash boars, in the lower right, what is that gauge for?

VW did similar on the beetle at one point I think, but it was a 3 speed.

 

I like how they have kept the complexity of a clutch and added French Electronics..

 

all it needs os a dual mass flywheel!

I'm intrigued ... What happens if you select the wrong gear for a particular speed? I.e. 5th at 10mph, etc. Does the electronics not select that gear? Or does it blindly follow the drivers every demand?

If you select too high a gear it'll give it a go (you can feel the clutch riding) and then it self neutrals and beeps at you in protest. As for too low a gear, I've not been that mean to it and don't intend to.... That would be pushing ageing French half-arsed tech to the point of no return :/

You are lucky to find such an unusual car, but the seller is even luckier that you found it- talk about a niche market!

 

Looks wonderfully tidy and it also sounds like a lot of fun! Loving the Velsatis in the background of the first picturewith grass growing around it!

Thanks Iain. Yeh they seemed pretty relieved to have the space in their garage back! And even more surprised when I actually called them in the first place!

 

Ah that's one of my part donors! It wasn't really saveable, here's a comical clip from a few weeks before it was condemned! I really should completely strip it and send it away, although it makes quite a nice garden ornament.

I do love a bit of modern French electronics! Also the synthesisers in them are ace. My Grandads last 3 cars, all Renaults have had them. They've slowly got better over the years. The one in his Renault 25 was very artifical, can't remember exactly the one in his Laguna II but I suspect its like the above. Shame they discontinued them. 

 

 

I'm pretty sure he specced it just to annoy my Nan... "Oh Reg, shut that thing up."

Ford did something similar with the early Mk5 Fiesta. I drove one as a hire car in Guernsey. Reversing uphill was a massive pain in the arse.

 

 

 

Durashift?

My aunt almost ended up with one. IIRC the lever had up, down and a standard D position in the middle. R was... somewhere else.

Saab did something similar called Sensonic.

 

 

I'm sure I saw a clip once of the SAAB showing that some fairly common manoeuvre, it might have been reverse parking uphill, was impossible.

The Fiesta was a CVT with fake gear ratios wasn't it?

 

Good work on the Clio, the Mk1 Twingo system was developed by AP Racing and the Ecu was made by AB Automotive in Cardiff when I worked there.

 

The only problem during testing was the car's would dip the clutch and blip the throttle when driving across a certain junction in Paris. Apparently there were so many high voltage cables under the street that the system's EMC shielding couldn't cope.
