Saving my knob

Recommended Posts

Through age and heavy use, my knob has become faded and unattractive looking. The top bit (where your hand goes) has faded nearly to white. I assume my knob was once a nice black colour. I do pull it pretty hard (and vigourously) when I'm going for it, so I suppose this is why I've worn the surface off it, I can't get any grip on it anymore - in situations where you just want to grab it quickly and do the business, like the other night when I was going like the clappers down the M53, my hand slipped off it and I nearly fell out of the seat.

It's not falling to bits or anything, but was wondering if there was any over the counter products that could bring back the lustre it once had.

Is there anything I can do?

There is nothing wrong with a well polished knob.

I think it may have to be replacement unfortunately, my hippo know looks the same and its not fixable.

It looks quite leathery in the picture, so a good rub and fondle with some feed ought to make it a lot more soft and supple. You might be able to make it go back to its normal colour with some shoe polish, but I won't guarantee it wont cause a nasty reaction - applying chemicals to your knob is never without danger

I share your concern, all the coverings coming off on mine and becoming a bit unpleasant to handle as it chafes on the flaps of leather.

There is a little wear to the side of mine from my ring.  Anything i could?

Hammer a larger knob over it?

(Yeah, ok.... Get me coat...)

Have you given it a good scrub? They tend to get greasy over time so a bloody good going over with hot water, toothbrush and towels may help. Maybe a follow up with black shoe polish.

They can come off in your palm if not carefull.

Is your car a far eastern RHD import?  There's a guy who does replacement parts for such, his nickname is Jap Si, I'll see if I can find his website....

Have you tried some leather cleaner? Might bring your knob back to life.

You could just leave it alone, you may find it gets better all on its own.

the gearknob, however, looks a bit far gone so replacement might be the best option.  See Dugong's Knobvan for inspiration.

That's roughly the same shape as the knob on my Probe.

I tend to leave when the twain consummate.

No disrespect, fabulous rabbi friend.

Wait for it to fully fall apart, then have the fun of driving around for a week or two using just the hard, cold shaft for support until your donated knob from another car arrives

And the shiter it came from has proudly displayed 'BIG HUGE KNOB on the box when it arrives in the office

I think it's safe to say that most of us on here have worn knob issues

Station, you aren't Fat Harry White, AI-won't-CMFP because that knob does not belong to a Bedford Rascal cabriolet...

It does look like the knob is rather worn out, possibly though vigorous or over use, too much rubbing with your hands can cause it damage.

I suggest you rub oily fish e.g. tuna all around your knob and get a cat to lick it off. Since cats have a rough tongue, this coupled with the natural oils in the fish should reinstate your knob's colour and texture.

TL:DR - lubricate your knob & get a pussy around it.
