Pop up headlights, four (ish) seats, engine over 2 litre, around £3k. That will be one 944 please.who in their right mind would answer probe at the end of that list?

In all fairness, we should ACTIVELY LIKE the Probe. It ticks most of the autoshite boxes - unpopular when new, unloved nowadays, not particularly good at anything, looks a bit different.

Here's an unbarried one, and IMO it looks OK in a '90s slightly yankified way - not massively dissimilar to the Mondeo of the era, really:

There's a Probe licker that lives near one of my mates, he's got two parked up outside his house that are still in daily use. I'll get a photo of them next time I'm in the area.

That one above is exactly how I would have one if I errr, had one.

I actually like RS Turbos (to look at mainly as I have not driven one). Oh, the irony!

Not bad motors they need the engine playing with to be truly exciting though, the standard 132bhp just isn't enough

Yawn @ the slating of any particular car really, didn't we have a "too shit for autoshite" thread and concluded it was pretty much nothing.

We've got a Laguna II and a PT cruiser on the forum FFS.

Verdict on the Probe: WOOD if <£300 (this verdict also applies to pretty much any vehicle.)

Dink, I'm not slating all Probes, just the one for sale at £3k.

You need to be careful, you might wake up one morning and find a Maestro in your hedge!

I don't think I am emotionally ready for another Maestro yet.

Is there something we've missed about Probes shooting up in value? Or is it just coincidence that two Ford-branded Mazda 626 coupés are up for silly money at the same time?

I've always like the Mx6 (and MX5, and MX3), but I'd rather die than have a Probe.

Not talking about yourself good sir, I happen to agree that he will be waiting till about 2050 to get £3k for that.

What I mean is that posts along the lines of "all X should be scrapped" are a bit tedious, it's a forum for shit old cars and whatever old shed is being discussed there is love for it somewhere.

If we all liked the same cars we'd be a sad bitchy 1 make forum and I try to avoid those nowadays.

I think someone's said it above but adding after market stuff does not make a car worth more, if anything it's worth a lot less as your average bloke isn't a mechanical engineer.

Have I owned or driven a Probe? no, would I? I'd own one if it was cheap why not I'd own anything if it was cheap doesn't stop me thinking it's a bit crap though

Who would pay £3k for a kev'd up Ford Probe? Step up please.

I wouldn't pay £3k for anything, unless I get a big win on the lottery, not when £500 will get you something comparable (how much was that Accord coupe up for recently?).

If people want to pay a premium for something specific, let them. Who knows, as I buy when values are lowest, one day I might even profit from it*.

*Other, more probable, financial outcomes are available

This is the problem with that car, you could buy three, four maybe as many as eight or ten probes with that money. If it was very low mileage and completely standard I could see why some one (not me) would pay that, but for one that's been mucked about with? Can't see it myself.

I think the main issue is the price of the car in the first post.  However, it comes down to supply and demand.  If he's asked too much for it then it won't sell.  If someone comes along who wants it at that price then everyone's happy.

I like to hear about cars that are generally unloved and most of the general public would give a wide berth.   In some respects the probe should be autoshite gold.  For an autoshite car though £3k is too much as we don't generally like to spend more than a couple of finance payments!

The only Pube I'd purchase would be one of these.

I'd be spending less than 1k on it as well. R.e the original Pube in question, who in their right mind pays a premium for someone else's aftermarket shite? Unless they have no taste whatsoever and chase a ball around a fake field with big cameras pointing at it.

Nothing especially wrong with the Probe, as far as I know, a bit underpowered even in V6 form and not great build quality.

I've read several articles comparing it to the Vauxhell Calibra and the Probe always comes second though....

The 406 coupe is also going to shit all over the Probe so it's no surprise they're not very popular.

I would have a 406 Coupe, Calibra, Prelude or Corrado but the Probe always wins for having pop-up headlights. Call me simple...

Before I clicked the link and took a deep breath expecting a complete pile of shit with everything off the ripspeed halfords shelf nailed to it. But to be fair it's not bad,not my cup of tea but I wouldn't recoil in horror if I saw it in the metal. kudos to the owner. The real issue for me is retro rides anti negativity police. Now I haven't read the RR thread on it but I know that you can't say anything bad about a car on there, any car for that matter without some shit from a mod and you have to post a penance thread. Unless of course your name is VIP and then you can be negative/sarcastic....ok rant over I'm going back under my rock.

The Probe is not a bad car, I worked recently with someone who had one and even the looks grow on you. I can see a good one, low mileage, few owners, original and immaculate being worth a decent amount. However the RR one has 154k miles, 4 owners, non-matching numbers, wrong interior, wrong wheels, wrong instruments (which don't even work :(), wrong brakes, and just about everything else in an incorrect finish. I don't know if the wheels and suspension mods are compatible or just make it dangerous, but whenever I've looked at RR most of the stuff there has been badly engineered crap, I would be surprised if this one was any different. It might be worth breaking for parts if it was cheap enough, though.

Don't get me wrong, I like for example modified JDM stuff, provided it was done by the factory or a recognised tuner, but this POS, ugh.

I miss the days where you could by a mid or large sized coupe that wasn't from a "premium" brand

We should, but I can't.  I did try, borrowing one for a bit.

It's like a flattened PT Cruiser with all the meh to go with it

That's fair enough, Probes aren't to everyone's taste. Including mine tbh, but I can appreciate that others might like them.

^^ IMO the Mazda has a nicer arse than the Probe
