Mitsubishi Star Runner Much Impressedness.

After having wantage of a certain 806 dashed I have decided that MPV ownership might still be a possibility if I didn't go looking at pictures whilst Mrs. PBK was lurking.

So. The options.

Citroen Picasso diesel

Vauxhall Zafira

Renault Megane Scenic

Limited budget of say 300 quid.

Tell me about them or other possible options for that price range.

Pre 2003 Scenic

Simple, reliable old cars. Rust rarely an issue. If you want diesel, pre DCI is better but not many left

Picasso not bad but you would be lucky to get a decent diesel for £300!

Zafira beats walking just about

To date, ok. In fact, I quite like it. I'm struggling to say anything useful about it, because it's a fairly unremarkable thing; it's just ok at everything.

The (admittedly unimportant) things which stand out are drawers under the front seats, secret* compartments under the rear floor, and a parcel shelf which can be fitted halfway down so you can put stuff into the boot through the rear window, which opens independently of the tailgate.

It goes fairly well (1.9dCi, which, apparently, will definitely explode at some point), handling is ok, it's fairly comfortable, there's a good amount of room in the back, and the back seats slide individually, for optimal luggage/passenger distribution.

I'm being positive about the thing even though mine still stinks like a dog brothel.

I agree on the Scénic. Try and get the facelift mark one (1999-2003) and there's very little to go wrong. Very strong 16v petrol engines that rarely give trouble besides ignition coils and neglected timing belts. Kit is really good in them and they're brilliantly flexible cars.

I saw aN 03 picasso with a dead clutch go through eBay last week and not get a single bid at £60

Picassos are cheap, the HDi is tunable to about 120 ish without bollocksing the clutch (stock is 90) and OK to drive.

Turning circle is shite, electrics and gear selector cables a weak spot. EGR should be deleted as a matter of course. 50mpg usual.

Berlingo (et al) as above but oddly with better turning circle

Eurovan 2 (C8/807/Usleslly) cheap as chips, 6 speed HDi is tunable to about 160 without bollocksing the clutch (stock is 140) and boot with third row of seats down is mahoosive.

Electrics and timing belts are weak - timing belt, tensioners and water pump need to be done at 40K, Electrics (rear power doors) fail in interesting ways.

Switch off the ASC and drive it like you stole it - think of a 100mph Living room, with velour armchairs. They corner well too.

AVOID AUTO BOX

Large horizontal tailgate GR8 in tropical monsoons for keeping dry.

"Go and buy a Trans Am" is the answer to all life's problems / dilemma's / middle age / Sally Field

I will drop that in to as many situations as I can tomorrow!

I *may* have a 1 owner 51 plate 1.8 pez Zafira coming my way very soon, which is not a Trans Am. Won't be staying with me, after it gets a wash and brush up and MOT- watch this space....

Renault 20?

In all seriousness, how about that weird 4x4 Scenic thing? Like a Scenic but more shite.

Im gonna stick up for the Meriva A.

Struggling to sell it to you tbh but ours has been ok in a bland, forgettable, vauxhall kind of way.

If I spend 8 minutes adjusting the seats and mirrors beforehand, and spend an extra 2 minutes looking at junctions due to the stupid a pillars I can drive it ok now too

Cheers everyone.

Mr Cade, maybe I haz much interest in the Vauxhalls are shitmobile nearer the time (maybe we can work sumfink out) but as a massive quirk of fate kicked me in the nuts I made a low ball offer on this beauty which was accepted:

I think this would fit in perfectly in the AS world. It's car sized, yet has decent space, is auto, with PAS and pez driven.

Taff, I do indeed and I quite liked it tbh.

More shite on the bucket list now. Thanks :)

Minus points for not being the 3 door version.

Several people have told me that Mr Bishi's Spacehoppers are jolly good things.

Live on the edge and get:

ETA: Mitsubishi? I might of forgiven you if it was a 1st gen Nissan Prairie or summat. Mitsubishi? Hmmm.

Every, and i mean every mpv is utter misery. I would rather take a trip to macdonalds than own one.

They're not too bad, but don't they have a rep for shitting 5th gear? I once was passenger to London, Kent and Essex in one that had done that and it wasn't much fun.

All very worthy options but da cash flow was very restricted. I got the Mitsu for 250 quid, this will allow me to attend to my other financial obligations as well. That has to be a good outcome. The Mitsu seems to be a good cross between car and MPV. Plus it looks a bit different (to my eyes anyway).

The car is a 4 speed auto which suits me better and from ze piccies looks to me like there is only one door on the drivers side ;)

I would love to get a Multipla as they look utterly barking :)

Maybe one day.

Sorry, I missed this. Looks smart, I like it too.

I have two children.

But I steadfastly refuse to buy a people carrier- it's man's way of telling the world that that you have served your biological purpose.

It's also a way of telling people you have a trampoline in the front garden, a budweiser fridge in the shed and dogshit in your living room.
