Yank van - opinions please

I've been wondering what to do with this thing.

I like it and in an ideal world I'd love to keep it, but it needs a fair bit more work than I'd anticipated and it's also not ideal for the crappy narrow bumpy roads out here in the arse end of Norfolk.

It's perfectly driveable as it is, but it needs some body work - there's quite a bit of grot around the aft mounting point for the nearside rear leaf spring, which is going to need cutting out and replacing with new metal, and there's also a bit at the bottom of the B pillar which is smaller but more awkward.  Both are far beyond my current abilities to repair to a satisfactory standard.  I haven't found any other major rot, but more might become apparent once it's up on the MOT ramp.

It also needs tidying in other places, there's a few scabs and areas of bubbling, and some of the windows need resealing as it can get a bit damp inside when it rains heavily.  I reckon it needs probably 400-500 quid spending on it to get it MOT'd and up to scratch - which I don't currently have, due to my seeming inability to sell anything at the moment (just had another no-show for the Master van, although this one did at least have the courtesy to email me and tell me he wasn't coming), matched only by my inability to stop buying more fucked cars to add to the ones I already have.

Thing is, the van owes me about 800 quid as it stands.  Would I be likely to get that back if I sell it as is, in need of quite a lot of TLC?  Or would I be better off waiting until I do have a spare 500 quid (assuming that this happens before the sun goes supernova), getting it MOT'd and tidied up and selling it as a fully functional vehicle?  The dayvans I've seen for sale on eBay seem to sell for 2 grand upwards, but they also tend to be newer and shinier than mine, with far more pimptastic interiors.

I think the fact that newer/shinier ones are £2K plus should be to your advantage, as hopefully yours (for say £1250) would appeal to people wanting one on the cheap.

It (probably) won't be easy to sell quickly, but I'd lob it up for about £1100 on the likes of CCW etc and see what happens.

Nope - 6.2 diesel.

Blimey I bet that's got some pulling power!

Apparently the £500 one that I took pics of is still for sale, could make one out of the pair it was a petrol though.

Save up and get the work done.

You will only have idiots making insulting offers pointing out that scrap is £30 per tonne.

Wonder what that kind of thing would sell for in Euroland, could be a bit of a jape to drive it to an East European auction and see if it fetches enough for an old Lada or bus fare to get home.

In all seriousness, I think you might get an OK price for that in Sweden, Yank stuff is very popular there.   There is even a sub-culture of fucked yanks used for drunkenly parading around in the summer.

So sell some tat over the winter, consolidate funds, get welding and MOT done and then advertise in Sweden.   Deliver via Hook of Holland, Germany, Denmark and over the bridge to Sweden,  sell for a good price and stay to chat up the big girl in the last picture.   WCPGW?

It might also have rusted around the perimeter of the fiberglass roof, so if I were a buyer, I would not be willing to risk too much of my hard earned on it, with what you've disclosed already. Also those GM diesels were as shit as shit could be. I remember people complaining about them when they were new.

I'd suggest you simply go for the break-even point and get rid of it. Also the price does depend on what amenities, if any, it has. But over here, being an 80's GM diesel would cut the asking price by about one-third.

I'm sure when I had the 6.5TD in some horrendous heap, someone said they can be shoehorned into a Landrover. If that's the case then there's probably a few quid in the engine alone.

I'm with Hauserplenty.

Get out of it now, salvaging whatever you can. I reckon you will throw far more than £500 at that, to make a small profit next Spring.

Realise the cash ,or swop it out, and move on.

This is the 6.2 diesel though, which from what I've read wasn't too bad.  The earlier 5.7s were dreadful, being basically a dieselised 350 small block, but the 6.2 was designed by Detroit and was a "proper" diesel engine.  They have their weaknesses, but then so does every engine.

It doesn't have many amenities for a day van.  It has some leather seats in the back (from a Chrysler Voyager) and a bed, and a separate heater for the rear, but it's not done out like a '70s brothel like a lot of these vans seem to be.

I don't think there's much to be gained from putting the engine in a Land Rover... the 25-45 bhp / 35-80 lb/ft torque increase over a 200 / 300 TDi will be offset by the extra weight & fuel consumption, and the hassle of the installation.

That doesn't necessarily seem to deter Land Rover owners though.  I've seen a couple of Rangies round Norfolk with GMC V8 diesels fitted.

Sell it to me for £250 and I PROMISE* I will:

A: Air brush a HIGH QUALITY mural onto the side of it (think of something along the lines of the album art for Whitesnake's "Lovehunter").

B: Fit a hilariously inefficient V8 engine.

C: Install big speakers to play Rush's album "2112" on a constant loop.

Then I shall use it as my daily driver.

Sell it to eddyramrod

yeah but cameron diaz has more balls :D

I was with Nyphur all the way until it was outed as having The Devil's Engine.  Up to that point Hairnet's comment was out of order (what she actually has more of is cash) but pulling up to the black pump is something I do on work time, not my own.

I'd still love it, but not at the price (there's honesty for you!).  Anyway I can't take on a project, I have nowhere to keep it and no money to throw at it.

It got to be worth a grand to someone while it's got some mot.

It hasn't though, that's the problem.  It's been off the road for seven years.
