This is class, Love the paint after the machine polish. Can't wait to get mine back from the bodyshop to give it a deep clean. I need to tidy up the rear screen plastic too as mine is a mess like yours was.

I don't think it's the same car. He's set fire to the original purchase and bought a nicer one.

I can't believe how good this thread is and how well the car looks now. I love threads like this where you can see the progress.

Sad it's almost over now really.

It can't be finished, it can't. I mean, look at its off-white eyebrow.

I expect, post-Cheshire, to see an update explaining how you whizzed up a perfect paint match in a kitchen blender, smoothed over the filler with peanut butter and blended the new paint with a clothes peg.

Sensational work, on one of my favourite cars.

Love love love.

Thankfully resolved, I noticed the car was a bit sluggish and smokey when I bought it. Sadly, a service didn't fix it, and a friend heard a whistling sound coming from the engine bay.

Fearing the worst (split pipe), I started stripping the engine bay, pulling the pip out of the bay, as well as the secondary pipe that enters the intercooler opening.

Once the second pipe came out, I had my answer:

The O-rings are renowned for being a basket of arses on these cars, and this one had carried on tradition.

Sadly, I didn't have spares of them at half six in the evening, and I could have gone to work to check, but there was no guarantee there would be one there.

Instead, I cleaned it thoroughly and inspected it. Aside from it being split (and oversized for the pipe), the rubber itself was in good nick. Luckily, the club has an O-Ring making kit:

A quick check revealed there wasn't any rubber in the required thickness, so I cut it to the correct length, and used the designated adhesive to glue the ends together.

Once dry (takes about 30 seconds), I refitted it to the pipe:

Reassembled the engine bay, and full boost has been restored.

Fixed for free, that's the AutoShite way!

I'll order a new set for when I return, but its holding for now, so hopefully the smoke will disappear on boost and the fuel consumption will improve!

Hours worked: 90.

Cheers!

No, it can't be over! That's like watching the last episode of your favourite box set.

He's got the "journey to Cheshire" bit to do yet....

You do realise that the car will get dirty on its trip. This will entail more threadage afterwards.

Great stuff !

I didn't realise there was such a thing as an o-ring making kit ! Brilliant, but £50 means I won't be rushing out to buy one. Perhaps some cheap nitrile cord off ebay and a tube of poundland superglue would make a passable alternative ?

I'll get the name of the adhesive next time I'm down, but the O-Ring material is nitrile, so it will work! I seem to recall the number as Loctite 406.

I would certainly practise before using it on any critical systems, but it worked fine on the intercooler system, given my hams of fist!

Goooooood morning, sports fans!

The MG is fuelled up, animals are fed, and the first leg of today's journey punched into Google maps:

Will update as we go.

Wish us luck!

Made 91 miles before the hesitation happened again.

Possibly fuel pressure sensor.

Sadly, despite packing every tool, its too big for my spanner set, we'll push onto Wiltshire and rummage through the in-laws tool chest.

It's fine on full throttle, so here's hoping!

I had a carbed Golf with a knackered waxstat that was fine on full throttle but not part.

The solution* was obvious.

Well, we made it to Wiltshire, it was fine for the remaining 120 miles, but we changed it anyway, and borrowed a spanner.

Whilst we dropped off the pooch, I got the tracking done at a local ATS for cash in hand action. Would have taken pictures, but the wife took my phone into the house and didn't inform me, so I would have been buggered if I'd broken down on the way!

Next journey!

Well, we're here, 402.9 miles in total, and once sorted, the miles went by effortlessly!

Same thing tomorrow morning, but for now, time for a pint of Trooper.

Cheers.

Good luck today, hopefully everything behaves itself on the way home

Yeah, just hoof it everywhere. That is the AS solution.

Just how dirty? How quickly can you take those bumpers off? ;)

Good morning party people.

Much ale was consumed last night, and a fried breakfast beckons. Once enough sliced pig has been devoured, we'll load up and head off.

Wow.

Seriously, most impressive action there.

And no, none of it will be happening to mine!
