Wasn't Bernard Pinchinstrider involved?

My "Understanding" is that Rolls Royce PLC own the rights to the RR name, and at exactly the same time as Rolls Royce PLC Bought BMW Aerospace, BMW gained the right to use the RR name on appropriate vehicles made in the UK. Which corresponded to the factory owned by Vickers with a Bentley and RR sign above the door, being sold to VW and the RR sign being removed.

RR plc would have been "okay" letting Vickers use the name as they were owners of the (now BAE Systems) Submarine Manufacturing facilities which took a Nuclear Propulsion Core from RR Marine at many millions of quid each. ie you keep buying our overpriced under performing reactors and we'll let you use the RR name on your cars.

Can you write that again more slowly, I got a bit lost in the middle where an aerospace company made submarine engines.

Rolls Royce PLC make erm Nuclear Reactors for submarines and for Power Generation.   They also make jet engines for aircraft, military and civil.

Does that imply then that BMW don't actually own RR at all then, they just rent the branding to stick on some fancy cars they build?

Effectively, yes. They have a licence to use the name Rolls - Royce and that's it. That cost them £40Million....

Mr xtriple, I've just finished reading this thread and am in awe. That Bentley of yours is beyond gorgeous.

Way back in the distant past, I rebuilt the engine of a very poorly cared for 'Eight' as an apprentice piece and was driven (no licence at that time) by my boss at the time, home to show my parents. I was in love with that car, though a Turbo was the unicorn I really lusted after... During the many conversations I had with the old man after, he told me about pulling up next to some city type in London with a Mulsanne Turbo in a van, commenting on the nice car in the early '90's , the driver replying he'd rather have the van, as the Bentley was costing him a fortune...

Still think they are magnificent, costly and stunning creatures, yours being a bloody lovely example. You are a braver man than me and must surely be Autoshite aristocracy?

I'd love to drive a Silver Spirit again. Last drove a 1977 model in 1979, just after my 20th birthday. I worked in the office of a well do do family business. The owner asked me if I could work on a Saturday evening, and I needed all the overtime I could get. He said I was to drive his daughter to London in the work car, so I agreed. Turned out it was to be in his RR and not the Granada Ghia I thought. Fantastic.

Halfway into London, it suffered a rear offside puncture so pulled over into a lay by and got the jack and spare wheel out of the boot. I was trying to work out how to take the hubcap off when she must have heard me swearing about it through the open window. Her head pops out of it and she says, in her phoney posh accent "Would you like a screw driver?" I replied "in a minute love, once I've changed this wheel"

I think that's more of a 'would dearly like to make, but no one has signed an order yet'; the Koreans, Russians and Chinese have the market sown up. If HMG ever order any SMRs work might go to RR but I'm not holding my breath as no-one in government or opposition seems even slightly enthusiastic about anything even vaguely innovative.

1977 Would be a Shadow 2, I think? Silver Spirit from about 1980?

Thanks for pointing that out. It had four headlights and was on an R plate, so must have been the Shadow and not the Spirit. Whatever, it was a fantastic car to waft in back then, and probably still is now.

You are correct. RR have lots of people in Civil Nuclear but they've never actually made a reactor yet. I've always assumed that it was be somehow based on a submarine propulsion unit, which are massive, and yet tiny compared to existing nuclear power stations.  At the end of the day it's just a fancy kettle producing steam which is put through a turbine, to generate power through a big alternator.

Now that is an interior, no fekkin brushed aluminium post modernistic shite in sight. I had a 'renter' Merc S Class for a day, feckin hateful thing, dash looked like a feckin duke box. Took it back and swipped it for an XJ. Not quite as decadent as this but part way there. Even some 70's BL had some Walnut Vaneer.

Out of interest R1 DTX has turned up for sale at Flying spares in Market Bosworth, they have it on their website with a description, notably they state that they have replaced both head gaskets.(sorry unable to post a link).

Looks a bargain but I hear the last owner let it go to rack & ruin ;)

Like Blue Lena , the previous owner also,  had secret compartment built into it ............ for dog biscuits :-P

Fine looking car but it would be ruined parked up in Edmonton and would cause many tears with regards to bills.

Is xtriple OK like?

Seems odd that his pride and joy would be for sale and still wearing his plate.

Presumably there's a story but wouldn't like to speculate.

He's not signed in for a while, anyone connected IRL to do a quick check?

The story was on here. After OMGHGF he sacked it off to them as spears or reapers as he was sick of the cost.

He's got a Mercedes ragtop now. I know he's alive as I got a friend request on FB a few days ago.

It's been a while since he got rid of it. Makes you wonder how much a pia it actually was to replace that head gasket and what other troubles they had after.

Posted

Head gasket parts alone are £1,100 ish per side. I remember looking at the time.

Fair enough, as long as the man himself is OK and his dogs have a suitable car to drool on.

Thanks for filling me in.

It sounded like it was a massive weight off his shoulders when he got rid of it. Loved it but only did like 500 miles in a year. But in that time made some rather horrific bills and the garage it was in leaked so buggered the paint up.
