I had thought of those but can't stand the looking down a tube speedo .

I do realise a 500 pound hot hatch is not going to be a great example but I am a garage owner/ mechanic who can weld , has diag equipment etc so I can prob handle it .

Im prob going to get bored/ go back to the Saab in a couple of months so I'm treating the hh as an almost disposable toy .

It's looking like a puma with a couple of months ticket and no hope of another is favourite .

I'd love an almera or corrola but the interiors are so dull I may as well use my starlet .

The puma is good but they're a bit wee inside . I'm just under 6 ft and found it a wee but if a struggle.

How about a daihatsu YRv turbo? Defo got the what the fuck factor.

Back in the Day.. S.G. Petch (StHelens Auckland) did Daihatsu.

When attending, for windscreen repairs, I saw a Gtti [4valve 3pot] trrbo in bits, in the workshop.

Kei size I think... TooFast, said salesman..??

a tatty puma is a good plan, smoke around in it then either repair it or break it up.

i'd also i think be looking for one of the daft jap gti's, something not too barried/ruined by daft kids.

i like driving something unusual though, the saxo thing has been done to death!!

I was going to suggest a Focus ST170 but I have been beaten to it. What about an Astra SRi or coupe.

I was looking at St170's and then mk4 astra Sri's and Coupes.

All the St170's seemed to be mega miles or owned by feckwits, and the astra mk4 Coupe is only 4 seats, and I needed 5. In the end I went for a astra "sport"1.6 16V twinport which can't be described as Hot, because it seemed decent and was local.

Yay! other people suggesting Daihatsus ... my work here is done :D

FYI - The std 1300 Sirion SL has 100bhp, weighs just over 800kg and handles better than a Yaris. They were the basis for the Rally, which got funky interior, better springs, brake pads and a reground exhaust cam. I know where to get all those bits, as well as expensive stuff like 4 branch fannymould & lightened flywheel to fit the Sirion ... I know that makes it out of budget, but just saying ;)

MG maestro

I just wanted to be the one to say it.

+1 for an MG Maestro or Montego, if you can find one.....

Sadly, I can only find an old (2002) photo of one (can't remember either why my mate was Woollarding behind the passenger door). The car in question was borrowed from another mate as I needed wheels to go to a wedding. He bought it from a 80+ giffer called Reg for 200 sheets. In the end I think it was OMGHGF that killed it off and it was sent to the 'yard. Went like shite off a shovel when it got some decent tyres put on it.

Anyway, it wasn't actively for sale. It just came up over conversation down the social club that he didn't drive it much latterly and is an example of what you can bag through word-of-mouth.

I've posted this in grin thread as it makes me happy but thought I'd post it here. I've just picked up a saxo furio. Not so much hot hatch but tepid. Feels more lively than a 1.4 should though to be fair and it's very throwable in corners. Insurance friendly vtr wannabe I think. I paid 260 quid. I think the unbarried furio, vtr and vts saxos maybe a future winner.

Yep - Furio is a 1.4 with a VTR/S bodykit. Alloys were an option so you're lucky if it has them.

If you can stretch to a grand I know of a good 205git for sale. It's on bike carbs and has buckets harnesses and roll cage.

I was ok in the puma at 6ft2. The reat seat behind me was a writeoff though.

If you can, get a doomed puma with a leather interior. I got £520 from a student from projectpuma for my leather interior and drivers side door when I broke mine, made the most money out of that bit, bonnet was £30 (was stonechipped to fuck, it went to someone with a track puma for off track fittage), tailgate was £40, radio 20, seatbelts £40 etc.

I need to scratch a hot hatch itch i

206 gti

I'd rather take my pants down in the middle of the sex offender wing and wave a large tub of Swarfega about saying help yourself lads* than drive one of those.

Posted

^^^ at my budget I cant be too fussy . Normally wouldn't dream of a 206 but as others have said the French do manage to blend handling and comfort well.

Good call on that one. Forgot they even existed. Another one to add to my 'list'.

A Puma, I think, should be right at the top here as a good one can easily be had for £500. Mine cost just less than that and after 7 months trouble free motoring all it needed for a new MOT was an exhaust, and that weren't in any way expensive. It had rusty wings, doors, wheelarches... pretty much everywhere a Puma rusts but it was only cosmetic and was rock solid underneath where it counts. I think that is the improtant thing. It was an absolute hoot to drive, good on fuel, and the engine felt unkillable. Mine was a Black as well so very well specced - although the quick clear windscreen never worked very well - and leather too. As others have said at this price they are worth more in parts so very liitle to lose, really. I sold mine for what I paid to Pa Laser Wheels who has recently chopped it in for a mint low miles one owner Sport Ka which he rates very highly. These are another one where low mile minters can go for £2K+ on the 'bay but there are loads for a couple of hundred with the usual rusty sills and possibly even an MOT failure. But as you can weld this should hold no fear for yourself!

Handling and comfort are two words not associated with any of the 206's I have had the mispleasure of driving

My two penneth:

Puma. Not that fast but you don't have to slow down for corners. Cheap and fun.

106 XSI. You might get one for budget and if you do they're fun.

Saxo VTS. See above, but within budget.

MG ZS. I was surprised how good mine was, although only being a 1.8 it wasn't that fast. I would imagine a V6 one to be good.

306 GTi6. Probably out of budget. Although an XSi is a good enough compromise.

Celica. You could probably get a gen 6 GT or a Gen 7 140 for around your budget.

That's all I can think of for now that hasn't been mentioned already.

HH itch ready to be scratched . 2001 puma with actual wheel arches and mot til June for 250 !

The 40 mile trip home reveals it needs a wheel brg but I knew that before I bought it .

It's gonna be terrible on fuel as I seem to want to wring it's knackers out all the time . So different from the 9-5 !

Nice one, I reckon a tidy Puma now would be a good investment for the future if it's kept in good condition, rust seems to have wiped most of them out and they can't get much cheaper now.

Having been oot in ra burd's 172 tonight and given it a bit o a hoofin

they are spot on!

Puma would be a close 2nd tbh- handling is great. space/visibility not so much, and they could do with a bit more poke..

that said a nice puma is likely to be 1/3 to 1/2 price of a servicable 172
