Thats class, im off to make up some shite about my Reliant.

As you will know this is a very very early Rialto, built in the Tamworth branch of Reliant. It has the early electric engine........................

You could thrown in that it was built by the same team that built the Ford RS200,using the exact same techniques as well.....

I rather fear now for the reaction I'll get this weekend, as I'm going to a 'normal' show with the Stellar.

Some of the comments above really sum up what I enjoy about AS. I may not like all the cars we as a bunch of misfits actually own, but what I do like is the fact that we own what we do because WE like it, rather than because it's popular or valuable.

A good one i hope, never seen one before only photos.

Ahh, if i remember correctly you could drive a RS200 on a bike licence as long as it had no reverse??

What is it with people?   I'm as grumpy and opinionated as the next shiter, probably more, but on the rare occasion that I go to a show I look at the things I like, walk past the things that I don't and if I happen to talk to an owner I only say positive things.   It's not that hard is it?

IainL those Bertone coupes are fine looking things, understated and stylish.

I wonder if you will get the reverse of the comments I used to get with my Maserati. They look just like a hyundai from the back. Or even have it mistaken for a BMW. I had one muppet came up to me and said "good cars these BMW's"

I can't really be arsed with car shows at this point.

Even with a car that is regarded by many as a "proper" classic at this point it's still just BL crap to some people and both cars wear their 38+ years of use openly in the form of rusty scabs, brush painted touch ups, torn upholstery, knackered carpets and missing trim. Some folk seem to consider that not right, that the cars should be better looked after. Bollocks, if anybody looked at either of my cars with their head rather than their heart they'd break both for parts because the amount of work required to get them "nice" is phenomenal...

I was talking to a guy with a slightly tatty daily driver Trabant a while back, proper two-stroke job. Don't know how he puts up with all the "they're made of cardboard" and "they were rubbish even for the Soviets" etc. As far as I'm concerned anybody who puts in a genuine effort to preserve and use a motor vehicle is alright in my books, I'm not going to go around telling people their Mk 2 Escorts are overpriced, rot boxes which are only hailed as the holy grail of classic saloons because people throw thousands of pounds worth of modifications at them to make them less of a 1970s shit box... Even if that is totally my opinion of them, because I'm not a complete cunt, only about 78%.

At a local show this year I took a picture of a tidy Mk3 Astra on display, I didn't bother with the endless rows of Morris Minors and MGBs... You see those everywhere, when did you last see somebody looking after a 1990s family car? It's not even turned Vauxhall Racing Pink FFS!

I'll be sanding back all the rust on the 1850 and painting it in red oxide primer with a brush, also plan to cut and shut a cream rear wing on that I probably won't re-paint, also rattle canning the bonnet matte black for an extra 15bhp. I might take that to shows purely to fuck with people...

I'm tempted to rock up at a car show in my vectra. 1.6 auto with a rusty arch. That should upset a few folk.

I would, and wire brush the arch and treat the rust at the show

I went to Doncaster* classic car show on Sunday. As well as the above pond scum I also saw a set of freaks dressed up in Star Wars outfits.

Only difference being that Darth Vader actually got laid at least once.

*that should give you a clue about the breeding stock. There were some ferociously fit Polish birds there though.

I did once get 'The Mini was designed by Tommy Cooper'. I shit ye not.

For me part of the appeal of a car show ARE the people youve mentioned. Really whether they like your car or not isnt important, the people watching is often the best bit, and the world would be a dull place if we all liked the same stuff.

Thats also one reason why these brown pages exist.

Glad to see it's not just me who feels this way! Plausible bullshit you could make up about your car is an ace thread idea too!

Posted

Don't keep it to plausible!

More fun to assess your audience and make it as implausible as you can get them to swallow. Don't forget to include a phrase which shows you recognise them as a fellow expert......like 'as you know'

Once they nod to that bit you can tell them anything.......

I was at a car show on Sunday with the Astra Coupe. It was open to all classes, the event was mobbed and it was a great day overall.

I had my car looking what I thought was mint, bonnet up and generally at its best. However, throughout the whole day, only 3 people commented one it, one of which was a "its still a Vauxhall".

Even my wife says it will never be sought after and perhaps in 20 years time I can get a proper classic car.

Honestly just feel like selling up right now.

2k cash takes it away!

If you're bothered that your car didn't get the attention something else did, then I'm afraid you've pretty much had it. It's a nice car and you like it, fuck all else matters.

At least I'm not in the minority by saying I'd much rather see a Hyundai Stellar than 'another' MGB...

Oh hell aye. Almost every show I go to is over run by Sherpa Coupe's.

I dont even look at them now a shows. Couple of MG-F and one MG-RV8 at the last show which piqued my interest.

I went to a show last weekend and there was a good mix..........and then the BMW drivers club and the jag enthusiasts club.

Among exhibits were a 2013 320 est and a 2015 jag something. But they were cherished and although I didn't choose to spend time looking at them others did and their interest doesn't offend me. In fact I'm not really bothered.......

Dunno if it is just me but I can't get the enthusiasm to look at a lines of the same car........so at same show was tr6 mob. I really like those and if there was one one its own I probably would have chatted to the owner about how nice or shit (lol) his car was. But a row? Bored at first glance!

Im glad the only car show ive been to for years was shitefest!

Posted

Forgot.......same show was PT owners club...........quite a few were 'highly individualised' (although I think all used the same catalogue). I enjoyed looking around those. Normally when you see them it would be rude to stare.......but at a show it is rude not to.

Anyway it was a big show so room for all........

I can only say the same as the others in if you like your car, it makes you happy and want to take it to a show then fuck what anyone else thinks.

I get it all the same comments from knobheads saying my Fiesta mk2 needs to be lowered with a zetec or is the ST fast they're just wankers that haven't anything better to say.

Took the mk2 to a show the other week and it hardly got a second glance as it was between a Sierra Cosworth and some Capri with their bonnet open that people were jizzing over. I don't care! Took this for a laugh

Had one mentalist asking all sorts of stupid questions about it and where it rusts/ why don't you see them anymore. Made it all worth it in the end when some normal woman was talking her kids it was just like hers used to be, people like her seem very thin on the ground though

To be honest whenever I'm at a show I tend to find myself drawn to the cars sitting on their own, not on a club stand. Unless the club is a "anything is welcome" sort of set up I'm just not very interested in seeing ten or so of the same car lined up.

I also tend to be never near my own car for long and often am found arsing around with mates or by the burger van, so have very little time to listen to what people have to say about whatever I am in.

That bloke withe the mullet and polo shirt is exactly how I'd like to see all Capri owners look. In fact if it's not compulsory it should be.

I went to a local classic show on Sunday-not been to one for years.

It was fine with some cars and bikes I really liked. The Austin A60 pickup I remember a local bike dealer using 40 years ago, has now restored, which was a nice surprise for me. As was the Suzuki RG500 that Barry Sheene rode in his last race before retiring. There were a number of well worn and faded BSA Bantams and James's, stood right next to some immaculately restored Matchless's-a great contrast. Didn't quite understand why there was a large number of Chrysler Crossfires there, but I chose not to look at those. Nor did I look at the obligatory "Del Boy" Regal van, complete with blow up doll and Del and Rodney non lookalikies..

I suppose the really nice setting, some decent cloudy cider, sunshine and bumping into my two nephews, made it the good day it was. Didn't even hear any of the bores mentioned here.

To all disenchanted car show goers I can recommend shitefest 2016.

More isopon than autoglym and all the better for it!

.....

That reminds me of the first time I met a certain executive of Cavcraft plc ... he was dressed as a clown at a car show.
