How's your car coping with the weather?

It showed me how sunroofs are pointless. It's too hot to have it open.

^^ I was surprised when 2cvs in the South of France kept their roofs closed in the heat of the day, but in the heatwave of '96 it was way cooler, with both side windows open.

Isn't the UK the biggest market for sunroofs?

£49 later, and the aircon in the meriva is ice cold again! A rare occurance of the words 'just needs a regas' apparently being true!

Thunder rolling over the hills here. Stil had ac on all bloody day. Car doing around 36/38 mpg so cant complain

Fat Accord is behaving well in the sun, temp is staying steady and the A/C is ice cold.

I'm hoping the 6" strip of skin I left on the center console arm rest yesterday after work will have an insulating effect when I forget that it gets hotter than the face of the fucking sun and stick my arm on it again today.

Chinese bike seemed unaffected by the heat this morning.  I've been using the Magentis for running around in the last couple of days as it has by far the most effective aircon in the fleet.

Octavia - cloth seats, sunroof, ice-cold aircon. A bit doggy courtesy previous owner. Much win.

Scirocco - scolding black plastic everywhere. Sitting in a sauna. Likes to heat up and then the fan kicks in and blows hot air at you.

Haven't driven the Jag this week.

MsJ's 56 plate Yaris recently had the aircon regassed by a mechanic over the road from where she works. He didn't regas it properly. It just circulates tepid air.

Sorry? Oh, I may have mis-read that....

Just realised the cortina has bronze tinted glass all round, is this a good or bad thing in constant bright sunshine?

No heat related problems with my cars, but the Capri's been sat in the sun most of the day. I've just got in it wearing shorts and had to leap back out again! Fucking brown vinyl seats, hot days and exposed skin are not a good combination!

Surprisingly the slight weep on the expansion bottle of the Renault has ceased (I'm guessing it blocked up with crud), isn't using any water but the power steering pump is leaking worse due to the heat, and in typical French fashion it's leaking onto the belt so it's making the belt disintegrate.

Needs an oil change, might put thinner oil in it, even in this weather 20w/50 feels too heavy. It's been averaging 36C here. Temp gauge creeps up to the last line before the red, fan cuts in if I don't have the aircon on and brings the needle back down again. Again, in true Renault tradition the grounds leave a little to be desired so switching the lights on causes the needle to move half a mark upwards so the gauge nearly gets to the red. I need to pull the needle off and realign it because it's half a bar above C when the car is switched off...

Went to work on the 'busa.

On the way home, my gonads have all but withered due to the heat from the engine - at one point I wondered if the bastard was going to catch fire.

Made it home, but cannot find my johnson and I'm bursting.

what motor is in it, Jonny? Did I dream it or is there school of thought that says you can run a pre-Xflow without a cooling fan?

It's an early 1500cc Cortina pre-crossflow.

If you were moving all the time then you could probably get away with no fan, but it would quickly cook as soon as you came to a standstill.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that it's my new uprated radiator causing the cooling problems. The new one has 4 cores instead of 2 and I think the stock fan is having trouble pulling the air through it when the car is stationary. I may have to switch to an electric fan.

is there room in front for a small, aux electric fan to "support" the engine driven one?

I loved my 1500cc 105e, best fun I ever had dressed

The Rover had a heat related problem, the Rover badge fell out of the steering wheel as the wheel expanded more than the lugs holding it on.

If that is the worst it throws up then happy days.

The old mistake of having more cores - the inner two cook like a bastard. I went through all that shit with tuned Minis.

The best rad is two cores. Two fat cores that can really hold some coolant.

Not between the engine and radiator, but there's space on the front for a push-through fan. Quite easy on mine because of the flip front. I'm assuming I'll get away with just running a normal fan the wrong way round - it doesn't have to be perfect.

I took the MX5 out for a spin earlier on, was nice & cool with the roof down.

Now sat at home again, sweating my tits off :-(

Oil temp is a degree or 2 higher than normal but seen 115 in France

No need for an electric fan, if you can find one of the 6 blade plastic crossflow fans, these bolt straight up.

The two blade jobby is atrocious.

My mk1 cortna runs between the C and N on the temp gauge always.

The only downside is, on the cortina at least, there isn't enough room to get the bolts in for the fan with the radiator in place, so you need to remove the radiator to fit the fan.

The Stag has been entertaining my paranoia since before a recent trip to Le Mans

First I found the dizzy is totally worn out so another has been fitted - I now trust the ignition timing and advance

Second I found that the viscous fan was doing nothing except add to the vehicles gross weight, a new unit has further improved the cooling system efficiency at low speed.

Last and using my new favorite toy, an infrared thermometer, I have found that the difference between halfway on the dash gauge and it nudging the red - panic mode engaged - is just 4degrees centigrade!!!!! 79 and 83 degrees c respectively. With a 20lb rad cap and 30% antifreeze boiling point is nearer 130 degrees.

Just to spite Lucas I left it idling with the bonnet down and then measured the temp again at 90 degrees, yet the temp gauge hadnt moved a fucking mm.

Fuck Lucarse the prince of darkness

Anyone here spend a long time working with servers - in the aircon 'ice age' ServerRoom?

My Doblo van has good A/C, icy! - but it gives me cottonmouth as it dries the breeze :(

I drive with the pass window cracked an inch to let in a 'breathable' mix.

You're right, of course, that's what I had before, but the added thickness of the new rad means the plastic fan doesn't fit in the gap. It's a contact fit with the radiator. I tried both crossflow and pre-crossflow water pumps as well, but still no luck. At the moment I've got two of the two-blade fans fitted. It's a bit better like that but still inadequate. I do need to revisit this because there must be an option that will go in, even if it means making up a custom spacer or adapter.

The 924 remains totally unaffected by the heat. No matter how hot the weather gets, it still won't start.

The superb ex-vantman Saab 9-3 has lovely aircon to further add to the pleasure of wafting along in a big, automatic executive saloon for my execultive lifestyle.

The temp guage stays resolutely at the midway point, even in loads of traffic in Bournemouth yesterday. Truly a nice place to be, even in 34 degree weather.

The nissan is also unfazed by the heat.

It's tight in my Mk1 with standard radiator, so I don't doubt that and can see why electric might be a better idea now.

I drove the Hillman across town and back today.

Car was hot on the inside but still cool on the outside so that's OK.
