Wilkos still sell 20w50. I always chuckle when I see clueless folks buying it to put in a 2012 Passat

What's 15W40 good for?

It's the lubricant of choice for the XUD is it not? It's what I used to put in my 405's. I agree there is probably not a huge demand mind.

The Viscol Home Bargains stuff is OK.

Lidl also periodically sells 10w40 for the same price. It's what I usually use...

Eurocarparts will normally sell 20 litres of 10/40 semi synthetic for about £28 with a discount that isn't hard to get.  Game over.

Which discount is that? I assume it's the Triple QX stuff which has been fine for me. That's an excellent price.

I get a discount based on an account which they give out freely.  I just said that I do loads of work on cars, but am not strictly trade, and they gave me a discount.  I can't remember the exact price when I last bought some but it was about that.  You can get three lots off ebay for £94 which is about £31/time so not far off.

Buy big, buy cheap.  You'll use it eventually.

What's 15W40 good for? The last engines suitable for that grade of oil must be over 20 years old now.

The Rover of Doom has been running 15w40 for the last four years with no issues.  I've also tipped just over a gallon of it into the VW van, and use it to top up the Movano as required.  Granted the only engine out of that lot designed less than 20 years ago is the Movano's, but they all seem fine on it.

If it's a N/A petrol you can get away with throwing pretty much any old shit in. Turbo petrols prefer synthetic if not changing often (I.e. long life changes), but if changed often it'll probably be alright. Except some exceptions (e.g. Saab 2.0t/2.3t and exotic German stuff).

However modern diesels you really need the right grade - especially if it has modern emissions stuff like DPF and SCR filters. Low SAPS it the critical requirement. Otherwise you'll get all-sorts of problems and things won't last.

I use that in The Volvo. It seems happy enough :)

Yes the Dexos-2 stuff's fully-synthetic.

Viscol, as someone said earlier, make Rock motor-sport lubricants as well. The company was asked by Kawasaki UK to solve a recurrent gearbox lubrication problem in the early 1980s on their KX 2-stroke motocross bikes. They did with a special formulation. And it worked.

Today, Home Bargains have semi & fully-synthetic 'Unipart' motor oil in ugly white plastic 'cans' at £9.95 for 5-litres.

A few months ago eBay - weirdly - had the same Fully-Synth oil, for £86.00.

'Weirdly' because significant numbers were actually buying it!

The Unipart Store on eBay still quotes the rrp at Eighty-odd-Quid!!, but their 'sale' will flog it to you for a piffling £26 with 'free' p&p too...

There's more:

Fascinatingly, H B will entertain anyone wishing to have a product on their shelves. They guarantee that they will consider buying anything.

No appointment required.

They'll see you on that same day. Really. Just turn up. It's Exactly like the X-Factor: simply Show 'em what you've Got.

So if you need to be rid of that piece of...

Asda had 4 different types of Fully Synthetic 5W30 Ranging from 14 to 19 quid for 5 litres. Text Oil then the reg number tpo 87103 and it tells you which one to buy.  The one in the red container for the Juke.

They think my Omega should take 10W40 semi synth. They can Fuck right off. It's 5W30 Fully Synthetic Dextrose from Vauxhall dealer with a trade club card for that baby.

I picked up some of the £8 5w30 while waiting to buy my new Mazda in the same car park #efficient...

Decent engine oil has not been cheaper for a long time. I remember trying to buy the cheapest tractor spec engine oil for XUDs a long time ago and it was always £10+ to fill the sump.
