Gary: gentle nudge to check your messages again mate

Is this a sign there is love for this car, can it be saved!

Is this a sign there is love for this car, can it be saved!

Given the tight timeframes involved, I suspect not. Gary wanted it shifting by the weekend and I wasn't able to offer the full (albeit very paltry) offering price straight away, plus the board outage has somewhat got in the way. On reflection, given the following:

limited storage space

minimal mechanical know-how

already have a miserable car I need to fix, plus a miserable donor I need to bridge

SWMBO would NOT be impressed

supposed to be sticking to a budget

it's best I don't take it on.

It's frustrating because I'm about an hour along the coast and I've got the proper horn for this car. I've got a socket set and a set of ramps and the brake parts on ECP are cheap, it could probably be MOTed with not too much bother. There aren't many of them about either now.

Cheapest transportation quote of £274 means Omegod is outer than Lionel Blair

This has now ACTUALLY GONE!!

I exchanged it for some welding on a Vauxhall Vectra, which is a decision I'm bound to regret as I did quite like the Volvo, in a way.

Apparently there's an MOT booked on it soon, which will decide its fate as an engine donor or viable repair.

Thanks Wolf, me too! It's gone to a friend and I trust he won't bin it unnecessarily (although he does have several Renaults in which the engine could be installed, a 9 being the most likely)

I am very glad. I have been feeling guilty about not saving this, but can't really be doing with another project. It looks like a nice one with hopefully only minor issues, so fingers crossed for the little fella. Keep us posted.

Would still quite like one of these at some point, ideally a turbo that's not black.

I'm curious to know if the box was fucked or not, just in case I ever own one that exhibits similar symptoms...will never happen but you know ..OCD and all that

Well that was unexpected.

This, plus the fact that it needs virtually a whole new braking system before even thinking about the drivetrain issue, means the end for this one.

Its heart will go on.

(I'm not aware of any other 480s on here but if you want any bits, shout now)

Bit crusty, that.

At least they said please.

Does that mean this will be an organ donor, then?  A Renault 9 is a good cause, I suppose.

Wow, that's a crispy subframe (if that's what it is).

I'm pleased someone will find its entrails useful.

Yeah I think so, that was just a picture I was sent with no explanation but the fail sheet refers to it as 'subframe mounting prescribed area' and 'steering component mounting prescribed area'.

No mention of rust at all elsewhere though (except brake pipes etc). If it had only a couple of its many issues it'd be fixed probably but the combination of that subframe, the brake discs/pads/pipes, the un-investigated drivetrain rumble and needing a bit of exhaust, combined with its low value, mean it's just not worth it.

UPDATE

I gave this to a friend who was planning to put the engine in a Renault 9. His father in law took a shine to it and they found a NOS subframe surprisingly cheaply. That's now been fitted and it has new brakes all round, and that seems to have cured it!

I borrowed it to go to RRG (as only one of my 7 cars was working, and that was the Mondeo) and it drives really nicely now. Still only on about 55k and it's been completely transformed. I'm so glad it wasn't just thrown away.

The R9 now has a 1.6 Mk1 Megane engine and looks great, I don't have a decent picture but I believe Dollywobbler got a few shots of it going up the hill.

Here's the Volvo with my latest purchase which I haven't mentioned on here yet (Spoiler: it's a fucked 205)

Brilliant news! I loved our 2.0 480 and only sold it is our Bassett hound couldn't get comfy in the back, bought a xantia.

Great news Gary!

The 205 looks like a "Gentry" (GTi automatic with those wheels, and usually gold). Does it have cream leather?

Could've made a doggy ramp!

Bassetts do NOT sit in the boot. Ideally they like a nice a centre arm rest to lean on and look important.
