Minor BOUGHT!!

Recommended Posts

Hi gang....

Bought this thing last week,

Looks pretty good for a Minor (not that I know much about them tbh) Both sills have surface rust and will probably need work before long, inside the rear arches near where the rear wings bolt on likewise will need work, as will one rear spring hangar, Rear wings have rot at the bottom as does one door.... but apart from that it's peachy!

It drives spot on, is very zippy and is just a lovely place to be. I love it! I did have a 1963 Morris Oxford which was a piss poor disaster of a car but this is totally different, easily keeps up with traffic- I love it!

I'll be on the look out for bits and pieces if anybody has anything kicking about.. especially wheels and tyres, mine are perished to fook and the spare has a rust hole in it!

I have much love for these things, they defo have a pretty unique charm to them. The owners club website was (and I best still is) a great place, very helpful/friendly and shit loads of spares.

Have you got a link? I can't find it!

Ps: Is that a token dead ginger cat in the footwell or a 1960's muff?

When you drive a Minor you have to beat off the sixties muff with a stick.

It's a dead cat in the footwell. I strangled it.

Nice - saw an ex-MOD Traveller the other day, but there's nothing like a 1000.

being a late one it should be a good un. layte plait madnuz.

staying stock or making sensible mods?

Not a bad purchase, you need to find yourself a wet roundabout...

A nice little car, my brother had a late one like that with 2 doors and I think it's the most usable one to have.

Middle aged man seen with having fun with minor. Front page news.

That looks a canny little example man. Well picked I think.

Great fun. I bought one in 1972 (when I was 17 and it was 15) for £50 and loved it Used to eat tyres which were readily available from scrappers. Sold it after about a year for £55. Happy days!

Well bought! They rot for fun as you already know but they refuse to die. People accuse me of looking upon mine as a surrogate child but I like it better than that - its more like a pet terrier. Two door FTW - mine has four but it means front access is cramped. Yours is quite a late, but not last, one - Aug 69 reg. 2 doors had about another year of production life after that. MMOC well worth the twenty quid or so the Forum is a bit starchier than this one but full of great folk who know their stuff and are very welcoming to new owners. I kept mine instead of my Farina Oxford, too, probably I will never sell it now. Take loads of advice before doing any upgrades as some are not worth the money in my opinion especially if you are going to use it as it was intended.....

First time you hit this with a hammer you need to shout something about a Minor's strike.

No, it's a dead cat. I'll take some rabbit pics tonight..

Halogen headlamps, duplex timing chain, alternator and leccy ignition are all i used to change on mine. :-)

It's got an electronic distributor already fitted, but is still on a dynamo, Is it easy to  fit an alternator? I have a big pile of them!

Posted

Yes it is,few guides on the net, will need converting to neg earth and a few wires changing on the control box.

Posted

Alternator well worth it in my experience, quality is getting variable on 17ACRs but if you have electronic ignition it takes a major failure point out of the equation - the sudden charge spike you can sometimes get with dynamo/regulator set up fries the modules. Also dynamos are getting expensive and decidedly shittier in the bearing department.

Yeah it's easy peasy to change to an alternator and well worth it. You want whichever the little Lucas one was in the Mk1 Fiesta, Mini etc, then the front spacing is the same as the dynamo so you can use the front mount and just weld a tab on the rear mount. Actually, since it's an A Series there's probably a mounting you can nick from the Mini.

Like the others said:

-Swap it to negative earth by swapping the leads on the coil and battery, the starter motor stays as it is.

-Follow the thin wire from the ignition light and take it directly to the small terminal on the alternator instead of through the control box - this switches the alternator on when you turn the ignition on and the light goes out when the engine is running.

-Then follow the thick charging wire back to the control box and use the big terminals on the box as a junction point so that the thick wire has a direct route from the alternator to the battery. You can leave the control box in place because it provides a handy junction point and you then don't have to muck about with the wiring.

Always carry a spare fuel pump; better still, plumb it in so it is there when you need it.
