Renault 25 - One of Your Better Decisions

Cheers! Not taxable without a UK reg no, I think. The MoT place used the French one, but as its not on the DVLA database it can't be taxed. Brookjm told me he insured his old Pug 504 on the VIN before he got a UK plate so I'll get that sorted tomorrow.

the yanks I have imported get insured on their chassis/VIN number, the insurance companies are aware of this and will usually issue a 28 day cover note, which can then be submitted to DVLA as part of your registration application.

Word of advise though, mate, photocopy everything in case Doovla lose stuff. Ask me how I learnt this...

Much as I admire car design from a totally different era, I love the '80's quirkiness of French dashboards. I don't think I could ever tyre of looking at that one

Project manager for a job I worked at had one as a 'hire' car (from arriving at an airport). 2.2 velour.

He wanted it swapped for a Rover 800. For some odd reason it had to be swapped back to Heathrow - I volunteered for a nice run out ;)

Preferred the Renner. Both auto.

In the late 80s a mate of my Dad had a B-Plate one of these. It did all the talking and everything. I remember being quite taken by it. At the time my only Renner experiences were the two Twenties my Mum had.

Great Work Mr T :-D

Very nice Rob. The 25 has aged very gracefully indeed, it hides it's age very well. This should have been the car that propelled Renault into the exec class but everything they did from the phase 2 facelift onwards made that less likely. I had a ride in an early one in the late 90's and was impressed by how light, comfy quiet and fast it still was. I'll keep an eye out for this around that SE London.

Strictly functional, nothing too excessive:

Thanks Nigel and Taff for the regging info. I'll delay insuring it then and just get all the doovla bit done first. I'll be making copies of everything and filling in the forms with a clear head so I don't cock it up. Too knackered to do it today!

Are those extra visors part of the standard kit? Those and the adjustable slidey armrest things are little details that show all the emphasis and thought about comfort that went into an aspirational luxury motor back then rather than preoccupations about nurburgring lap times etc.

I think the visors may be giffer trinkets purchased later on as they clip on to the original solid one. It also has that tiny visor above the rear view mirror that I've only ever seen on XMs before.

I spent an hour this afternoon doing one of my favourite shite related jobs, plastic rejuvination. I watered the Autoglym bumper care down a bit with some turps and then literally brushed it on as the trim is well gone on here.

Yes, renault seats are made from the softest substance known to man

Yes - it's a very versatile substance too. When they finished producing the R25 they used the surplus stock in the manufacture of Laguna engines and gearboxes. Arf!

My dad had this 2.0TXI manual for about 7 years:

It's probably my favourite of all his cars and still one of the most comfortable I've ever ridden in. It eventually needed an engine rebuild and a new clutch (all done in that little driveway you can see in the background). At one point around the turn of the century when me & Sis were both living at home we were a 3 Renner family - her first car was a 5 (1108 cc 4 speed!), I had a 19 (1400 'Energy') In those days, although not without their faults they seemed better built than the Ford/GM equivalents. Sadly by 2005 the 25 was starting to go at the sills and dad decided it was time he had a brand new car. I think it got sold off for £200 and was replaced by a Corsa :-(

Woof, that looks gr9 Rob, slightly bigger engine than the last one, so should make it a tad livelier.

Hows the autobox on this one? 3 or 4speed?

I,ve got 2 boxes of useful Phase 1 25 parts and a set of genuine workshop manuals for sale if you are interested?

My Bro had one years ago that grenaded itself in a cloud of oily steam.

Whilst sat waiting for the AA, Nicholas Parsons continued to torment him...

Oil level low

oil pressure low

water temperature high

water level low

Door open

Oil level low

oil pressure low

And so on....

4 speed auto which suits the wafty nature perfectly, and the selector is great the way it just glides up and down the gate in a lazy French manner!

Lovely car, brilliant purchase!

Where's that Volvo gone?

The interior in the 25 absolutely fascinated me and still does. Beautiful!

In about 1993 we inherited a black G reg V6 auto at work after the takeover of another company. It had no aircon or leather ,but did have funky multi inflatable seats. It was kept as a pool car and I used it a lot as I had three small kids and loads of crap to cart around, the kids loved the voice, I used to leave the handbrake on and door ajar every time we left the house, just so the kids could have a conversation with the car.

It was pretty quick and I once got 3 points after a very pissed off copper in a Cavalier SRi chased me along the A40 from Symonds Yat to the Tewksbury exit on the M50 late one Sunday night. Mrs N and the kids didn't wake up throughout the whole episode. The copper reckoned he was up to 120 to catch me, but luckily just put exceeding 70 on the ticket.

Thanks Ken. Volvo is still here, do you fancy it...? Is your 75 working now?

I'd be tempted but Project Rectify Rover is afoot. I have a replacement upgraded fan to fit and a couple of odds and sods to do, all of which has hit my few remaining quids.

If I had the funds.......

I thought JohnK was interested in the Volvo.

It's looking fantastic Rob, what a great purchase.

However...

I have a strange urge to ask you to paint the grille a graphite grey colour.

I know, I'm a silly boy. Carry on lad!

You is right Joe, it's the wrong colour. I think it needs to be white though like this mint 25 that does the show circuit down here

Tiny pic faar awaay

Good luck with it. I sat in 40mins of traffic getting in to PoL today and the gauge on my 75 was plumb in the middle all the time, so once sorted they can be fine and not all HGF doom. My gauge could be lying of course but i made it home OK.

John seems to have his hands full with BMWs at the minute so I'll let him off!

Who are you, and what have you done with tooSavvy?

maybe it IS Savvy and his medication has worn off?

Fabulous. We need to have a white French barge battle. I think this will mostly involve sitting on velour, discussing electrical woes.
