I'm clueless on this one so I'll start the ball rolling with a shotgun approach:

Something German?

Yes

Erm, yes? Although the family isn't as big as it used to be so I only need to transport me + 3 children except on very rare occasions.

No van, as we progress through week 6 of my van being in the garage I still retain some hope I'll get it back one day

Can you get 5 door convertables?

I think I know what this is. German and blue? If so I don't want to spoil it.

Can tell he's a northerner - all the nice food markets and street vendors he could have had lunch at, and he chose Greggs! 😂

On the way in, I figured out I have done almost 1000 miles since I bought this. Then I was adding up how much it owes me versus sale price...

I really do need to stop buying something and then selling it a few months after without getting some use out of it! 🫠

Away man, that's all the fun!

Yes as a few of you guessed it's the Golf.

Strensham achieved, just stopped for a quick rest really as the M5 is boring as owt.

Not much to report on the car which seems to be solid and sorted to drive. With the "fettled by @SiC" lifetime guarantee I had no doubts.

Thanks Si for all the work on the car and for the very fair price offered, it's fair to say I was pretty miffed to have to let my S3 go for *reasons* so this goes a good way to cheering me back up on the car front.

I'd be interested to know how the K03 turbo performs compared to your S3 that had the bigger K04 turbo. While a lot less bhp, do you find this any difference in zippiness? I seem to remember you saying the S3 didn't really come on form until ~3k where as I find this starts to go around 2.2k. So around town it's quite easy to nip in/out of traffic.

I filled it up to half a tank with regular as I reckoned you'd prefer the quantity over quality for the journey back and you'd not be on boost much anyway due to cruising. So probably no real burn rate differences on this sort of drive. Super unleaded should release more bhp than the regular iirc, so should be quicker again even though it's a stock map. (Tbh I didn't really find much performance difference real world driving between the two)

Very nice looking and looks far newer than its 56 plate depicts it to be.

Can you find a tidy early allroad in red next. Dibs etc.

Hard to tell just from driving home on the motorway so might have to report back later.

First impression is that the GTI delivery is more linear, there really isn't an obvious turbo on/off point like there seemed to be in the S3. With this one having standard inlet and exhaust where the S3 had a resonator delete the whole thing seems a bit muted in comparison. It sure does go though and I clocked a 6.9s 0-60 when I quickly stopped on the way back so no slouch at all.

I think a remapped one would be good as I reckon they have deliberately set it up linear and un-turboey. You couldn't use much more power in 1st and probably 2nd but the other gears would make it feel better on the motorway.

6.9s is quicker than book figures and that's on regular rather than super too! Despite it's high miles, that engine always felt in pretty fit condition to me. I'm pretty sure from the peak boost figured I measured with a scantool, that it hasn't been mapped either.

To me it feels very modern turbocharged in that you have a lot of low down torquey power. I tended to just drive on that sub 3k wave of torque while upshifting keeping revs low. Basically driving it like a modern diesel for the most part. Even when I wanted it to go quick, it didn't take much to knock it down a cog or two and have all the power there to rev out. Probably helped by the small turbo either still spinning or low lag in kicking up quickly.

I get why people fit the bigger K04 in search of more power. But I reckon for town drivability and whizzing about the K03 is better. Same with the 1.8t 180bhp K03 Vs 225 K04.

What were the MPGs like on a real long motorway run? I'm imagining low to mid 30s if the loud pedal wasn't stomped that often. That's the sort of figures I used to get with my BWA engined TT MK2. 6th gear revs are quite low at 70mph too.

Posted

35.5mpg on the OBC, the fuel in it might have just about got me home with some 0mi range roulette but I stuck some in at knutsford.

I've done me a modify: had a Pipercross panel filter in my existing stock of bits. Probably makes close to zero difference to either noise or power but whatevs. Filter in there wasn't even too bad.

Some of the dirty marks are probably from my mits when I took it out last. 😅 It wasn't brand new then but didn't look old to me at all. Certainly nowhere near worn enough to have me justify changing it.

I think I did change the pollen filter though as that was a bit more dirty. The original was an expensive and fancy Mann fercious plus filter. Stuff like that made me think someone did care about this car and possibly DIY serviced it regularly.

To recap seeing as there have been some ins and outs:

Van - still technically own but it's been at the garage 6 weeks

A3 diesel - someone please buy this

Golf GTI - in today

Vespa PK - never selling

Gilera runner - pile of bits

And that's all I have at the moment, unless you count push irons

I had an S3 but I part exed it for this diesel A3.

Currently I am trying to buy another house and need to pay money to assorted shitehawks like solicitors so had to sell it.

@SiC I did a graph.

image.png.e09d0cf04ab103606014407693ff315c.png

Kinda explains why the GTI doesn't feel very turbo-ey as it's making max torque from like 1750rpm. The S3 is still building to 2500rpm, according to this.

Interesting to see those lines. Basically follows the same gradient but just stops earlier. Presumably a remap will let the boost continue increasing and just bring that line up higher.

Also explains why when I was riding that torque curve from 2k it felt pretty constant acceleration. S3 is probably doing similar performance earlier on but carries on pulling harder so feels like it's slower when it's just not finished giving yet.

It's performance curve is also very modern with it rising quickly to such a flat line. Kind of the best setup for drivability as plenty of power to use without having to wring it's neck.

A stock 2018 Fiesta ST 1.5 ecoboost looks very similar.

Ford_Fiesta_ST_2018_Stock_Power+Torque-m

Even the piddly little 1.0 ecoboost with it's teeny tiny turbo it's the same deal as these factory ford graphs show. Albeit spinning up at lower revs.

Older fashioned Clio 172 N/A 2.0l which is a similar vintage - this starts at 2200 rpm but still has torque climbing until 4500.

Probably why I prefer driving the Golf GTI over the n/a hot hatches of a similar era.

Bonding with the Golf a bit more now, I drove it over to t'other side of Leeds to Motorpunk's book thing the other night.

Coming back I came across one of those queues on a single carriageway road where there is a lorry and a series of dawdlers behind it and they were well and truly dispatched.

The car is definitely faster than I initially thought. I also think it may require a little more skill to drive fast rather than just relying on quattro and POWER to get you down the road.

There is also a slight smell of having been smoked in which you can still detect when you first get in. I had the idea to swap to a black or tartan interior but there is so much that would need to be changed to match, door cards, centre console, lower dash, all the pillars, not to mention Si's lovely headliner. So will probably just try and give the seats and carpets a scrub.

I'd be interested to see a proper graph of the boost with rpm. I checked with a scantool balanced on the dash while booting it to see the peak. Not exactly the most scientific method. However (can't remember the exact number) the peak and constant boost levels didn't seem any different from stock numbers I could find elsewhere.

Definitely feels very sprightly though, hence why I went looking for any evidence to see if it was mapped. Your 0-60 of 6.9s suggests that it possibly isn't too.

I have read that Haldex Quattro also can have a fair bit of drivetrain losses. So I guess the 200bhp in this goes a bit further. Having had Quattro in the TT MK1, I fully liked the ability to just dump the clutch and it bite into the tarmac, no matter the conditions. However imo having just fwd or rwd makes it more of a enjoyable driving challenge. That was a major sticking point against me getting an S3 as I feared I'd get bored of it really quickly. I'm not done with GTIs yet and can see myself potentially having another in the future.

Mrs SiC and myself definitely could smell the slight smoke smell getting in too especially when warmer and if sat for a few days. While a bit pungent, it does go away once started and the blowers going. We're pretty fussy on such things but it was acceptable as it went away so quickly.

After buring my nose into the seats, my suspicion is that it's in the carpets. I never got as far as seats out and a scrub but that might get a bit more out too.

I couldn't see any obvious signs of smokers in the headlining fabric when I took it out. Usually ime it leaves a tar like crap inside the headliner which I couldn't see any of. I think it might have been a smoker that didn't smoke inside the car but it just got on their clothes.

I had a mk5 GTI 5 door in red, with the DSG box. Is yours a manual?

It's one of my favourite cars I've ever owned. Unfortunately it got written off parked outside my house when a neighbour's son who was high on drugs smashed into in his dad's car and drove off!

He ended up being sent to prison. The GTI was Unfortunately completely beyond repair after the shunt.

I did love its blend of practicality and performance and ability to blend in with everyday traffic. A great car.
