I haz ovlov 240 - I'm Losing again.

Well after dragging it from 8 years of slumber in a damp garage, I now have an ovlov sitting on my drive in need of some TLC. :-D

It is the first ovlov I have owned and like the feel of the quality so far 8)

The first job was to give it a bath and a hoover to make it look more like a car than a mobile tip.

Then a quick job to stop the throttle from sticking. :-D

Besides a service I have a new cambelt etc on the to do list and 4 tyres.

It also needs new tailgate struts and a NS mirror glass. The aerial doesn't retract either. Hey ho - I have all summer to fix it.

Details as we go along this journey....... :-P

Some pictures for now......

As found...

getting ready for loading. Note the flat tyre as the garage was that small - no way could it be got at before it emerged.

Already for departure

After a good hoover - just need to go round with some vinyl cleaner now.

They really are solid old things - it feels like it's hewn from granite. I notice on the VOC forum that they refer to these as the "brick" :-D  :-D  :-D :-D

I am surprised that for a 1989 car that it only has 4 forward cogs. :?  According to the handbook this was still common on the DL version like this.

In the end I had to opt for a full blown recovery truck that was contracted through a friend of a friend of a friend. :-D

The driver (Dave) was a great bloke and I enjoyed my day cabbing with him :-D

He is also a car nut and recently bought a corsa for £80

Lovely. Looks really good after the clean up.

They are really great cars, dead easy to work on too that old red block engine. I'd have another any day.

ooh, much like from me! I loved my 240 torslanda and yours looks fantastic. they truly are exceptionally well built cars capable of stupid mileages.

One of these was driven by an impossibly butch 60 y/o woman who worked in a shop near me.

We nicknamed her 'Torslanda' as it sounded like the name of a mythical musclebound sword wielding Nordic Marvel superhero.

This is the yard with the 240 https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Armadale,+Bathgate,+West+Lothian+EH48+3QE/@55.9048754,-3.6811536,240m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x4888765ffdd33965:0x4637354ef649607It's a proper old-school yard, and very reasonable as far as I can tell. I got quite a big bit of trim for my 940 there and he just waved me through. They have an early Mk3 Cavalier too, if you like that sort of thing.

Looks a good 'un.

And the material on those seats looks truly miserable - like the shetland tweed used on povo spec SD1's.

Lovely thing that.  Get a look behind those door bottom/sill trims to check there's no crust growing, I can't remember exactly how they come off, it's been a while since my old 240 saloon.

Searching through the glovebox and the handbook folder, I find every tax disc for it since the first day.

I could make a mint on ebay at the moment...

So he could drive it away on the 3rd January 1989 it was taxed with a Dec 31st 89 expiry for just £100. It was then taxed every year right through to the end of 2007. The MOT expired at the end of July 07 and it has been off the road since then. It went off the road with just 105,000 miles recorded.

It had this lifetime warranty on it which apparently was transferrable to subsequent owners. The main criteria seemed to be it was serviced at a dealer. Oh well I'm a few years late for that one. :sad-smiley-005:

Just ordered a new cambelt from the dealer - £12 so that's OK although the boy serving me was a lot younger than the car.....

Funnily enough they didn't stock it. What is the world coming to.........

At least it lets me continue prodding and poking to see what I have.

Excellent.  I like the pinstripe.

Good luck with the recommissioning/servicing - will be interest to see how that goes, what weirdnesses you have to trace etc.  Hope it's all straightforward, of course, but pls keep us posted.

A day of dodging showers but managed to make some progress :-D

First off were the rear brakes. Surprisingly the securing pins were free but the pads weren't :angry008: After a lot of pulling and bashing I persuaded them to let go of the calipers. Once this was done and after several ins and outs (oooh missus) of the pistons it was time to clean up everything and rebuild.

The handbrake works a treat and releases nicely. :happydance:

Once they were all rebuilt they release as per spec and all is well. :-D

However - while looking under the vehicle I noticed the bumpstop/spring assistors and touched them to see how good they are. Both immediately fall off in my hand. Bugger   Sprayed the bolts with plus gas and left them for another day. Another job added to the list..

Finished the day inside as it started to rain again and cleaned the vinyl throughout. The plastic is good quality as it responded well to the AG vinyl care and I even managed to get the symbols white again on the column stalks. 8)  It also cleaned some dirty marks on the roof in the rear. There were two marks about a leg width apart - surely not..................

Tomorrow it is the front brakes - weather permitting.....

That looks bloody brilliant. They are great looking things and that looks like it really will end up being a minter. Fabulous.

That looks great! I do like older Volvo's. They were built to last which is more than can be said for dinner other manufacturers. Will be interested to see how you get on.

By law, all RWD Volvos are known as bricks or tanks :)

Fancy a full size roof rack for it?

Wow - that must be a fair sized beast. Does it clamp to the guttering?

Have you any photos please?
