New battery arrived today! Thank You Tayna Batteries.

and, of course, I fitted it as soon as I could and turned the old beast over.

Well, diagnosis not good - starter churns over slowly with a lot of heating up of the cable so I am guessing it is f*cked.

Pricing up starters is a fun business. An UMM one is €190, plus €120  exchange surcharge. An LDV 400 (Pug 505) one can be had for £78 on Ebay, or I could take it off and head to the local starter and alternator service place, who will rebuild the current one.

Unless, of course, someone has an LDV 400, Pug 505/604 2.5 diesel engine starter motor.

Plus €120 exchange surcharge?  How does that work, then?  Does that mean you'd save Ã¢â€šÂ¬120 by just sticking the old one in the bin instead of exchanging it?

These crazy foreign types.

Posted

nah, its the thick end of €320 and you get €120 back - an LDV one may be purchased in the next few days ...

Their prices do seem pretty good, and even better if you happen to be local  8)

I sat in it earlier and watched the wipers from the inside, thinking it needs another!!

Why not try to rebuild it yourself ? As long as the windings are OK, a starter rebuild consists of little more than cleaning everything and replacing the brushes (which should cost less than £10).

TOday I spent a couple of hours with the UMM.

Disconnected the battery!

Crawled underneath and  checked access!

yep, you can see all three bolts - tight access though and max of a quarter turn of the ratchet or spanner!

Eventually managed to get all the bolts undone and tried to wiggle the starter out - from the bottom - nah! From the top- nah?

Plan B

start to remove the access panel over gearbox and heater panel.

You have to remove the seats (four nuts and pull off).

Then the seat belt mountings from the floor

remove the carpet

Unscrew the access panel on the floor and pull up.

Handbrake is still mounted so won't go up to far.

Then it's remove the screws from the heater panel

and pull it back as far as you can!

It's now that you discover there are two hidden screws behind the dashboard! Oh Shit, you say!!! Then you look at the side of the dash and realise there are two screws each side. Undo these and you can pull the dash up and the pull the heater panel away enough to be able to remove the starter.

et voila!

Refitting should be easier as access from the top is possible now.

Found another 4p and a swatch watch.

four screws and the dash just lifts up - everything unplugs so it's really simple! I was shocked how easy - it was more effort removing a seat!

Yes!!! 'To access the starter motor, begin by removing the dashboard' >> then.....

...... keep it up! Crakanory Buildee Series awaits.

This is looking a lot better after the exterior and interior clean. What are you actually going to use it for when it's on the road?

Anthony, as you know I live quite high up and the only way to go anywhere is down - it can snow terribly here so wanted a 4x4 - but not one of those poncy luxury things - and LRs are now too expensive.

Plans keep changing. Priority is to get it mobile. Without that, nothing else matters. I have the challenge that bits were robbed for skattrd's one - so I have to be careful as I'm trying to get it sorted as there are obvious bits missing. I looked at the old brake master cylinder and hve pretty much decided to buy a new one as it is easier and almost as cheap as a rebuild of the current one.

Here are my main thoughts of what to do with it!

keep it as it is, ratty paint and all, and just use it.

Add a roof rack and roof tent and kit the inside out as a mini camper.

Paint it all over white and get Portugeuse police signs for the side ...

THis week's jobs are to hoover out the passenger area and get rid of the crap.

Refit starter after rebuild.

RTFM - now I have downloaded it all.

They are ****ing annoying. I was punching in random Ami parts into Google and every time it was them popping up to the top and every link went to a 'not available' page.

Actually, it was PPCGB, but same shit / different site. Bunch of clickbait ball-lickers. Boiling piss etc.

I really love these motors . A few farmers near Aberdeen had these while I was growing up and they reckoned they were great machines . I was looking to buy a series 3 Landy but I think my search may have been widened

Go on twosmoke300, join the Umm club, population INDENOR

Compared to my BIL series dizzler the Umm feels like a sports car.

Not really, but it has a turbo and disc brakes so it goes and stops without use of a calendar.

the seats are more comfy than Landie ones too! and they adjust in more than one way! And the bulkhead doesn't interfere with the seats. I can't comment on Skattrd's one but my seats are super.  It bolts together in the same way as a series landie too, everything is quite simple and my only complaint is just how far the engine is located is away from the radiator. I could fit a donkey engine in the space between rad and engine.

I'm not even sure parts are a huge issue - you just have to be creative - you can't get new body panels in the way you can for Land Rovers but rust free parts are available from Portugal.  Evidence also tells me they do not rust like Land Rovers do. And being steel, you can weld them with home equipment and no special skills required.

There is also a huge fanbase in Portugal.

I should hear back from the Worcester lot tomorrow regarding spares too.

The manual is a hoot - Portugeuse translated into English by people whose native language was obviously neither Portugeuse or English.

When I dropped the starter off for rebuilding, the guy there instantly asked me what it was off - he knew it was a Pug starter but didn't recognise the pinion.

I have a Bosch pump too, by the looks of it ...

LRs are now unaffordable -

To be fair a medieval torture rack is more comfy than a series 3.

The space between rad and engine can't be any bigger than a 200t diddy defender
