It's all to do with rallying I think. I've got the Lancia Delta HF4WD that kicked off the dominance of the deltas in rallying, loved the escort cosies in the yellow and blue Michelin livery. Wouldn't mind a Toyota Celica GT-4 Sainz-a-like either.

As soon as he started talking in that advert I remembered it. The early ones are really starting to look good now aren't they, which is odd as they never did when they were new. There was that Harrier for sale on Ebay a while back that I had a right lob on for.

Check the battery tray

If it's holey then the fusebox will be forked as they live just under it

Then try finding 1......that works.......of the right type as Ford fitted many versions...

Bodykit and bumpers will be hiding a multitude of rust spots

So buy it immediately,find all the hidden stuff then sell it to me for spares for mine....lolol

The mk5 must weigh about 78 kg as it's the flimsiest feeling car I've ever been in . I'd still have one obvz.

I quite liked these when they are still current. Always had a soft spot for a 3 door escort of this shape, which probably makes me fairly unique.

 

why didn't they lob a 2.0 zetec in it? Not that there's anything wrong with the lump it got, just thought the zetec was current then?

Worth a look I'd say. It's likely to need a lot of welding though if its like any Escort I've seen lately.

I always thought the Mk5 was a good looking car but ruined the looks with the facelift to the oval grille. Always wondered why they felt the need to update the looks after just 2/3 years.

Having googled Mk5 Escorts freshly I can say it's because it was a dollop of shite when introduced and slipped from top sales spot for the first time so got a major fettling right through.

I think I read somewhere years ago that the rs or some derivative of escort was basically a ford Sierra floor pan.

I thought it was nowt so glamorous, French Sierra hire car. A fine adverts for seat belts, his passenger was ok, unbelted Frank didn't survive the roll too well.

^that ad that WTC posted, I remember that really clearly. As a 12 year old it was the best ad ever, though even then I prefered the MK II escort in it.

It was for a combination of reasons. Grilles were back in fashion, especially after Rover fitted one to the R8 facelift, and Ford were trying to relaunch the car after it had been panned by the motoring press. New engines, a new bonnet/grille, and new tailgate/lights and hey presto, a supposedly radically different Escort. It was a cheap way out of some bad press for them, without altering the car and/or production lines by all that much.

 

I know what you mean about the grille though, it always looked like the hastily added item that it actually was. I preferred Rover R8s without a grille too. At the time though, the aero look was probably a bit '80s.

 

As for the RS2000 you probably can't go wrong buying that, in financial terms. Provided the bits made from unobtanium still work.

I never really liked these at the time but they seem to have aged pretty well and I'd have to admit that I have a bit of a thing for them now.

Honestly? Didn't like them then, don't like them now. About a dozen years ago a mate had an RS2000 (2wd?) version, drove it a couple of times, all rather 'meh, it's OK', not too impressed. But each to their own.

 

The only reason I'd buy one personally would be if I had the (sheltered) space to put it away for a few years to allow the scene tax to rise as will be the case with any fast Ford and flog it off to make money. Sorry, no offence Ford-ites but they don't do it for me, there's far better out there.

 

The value of these cars will definately rise (can't recall last time I saw one) as they get rare. I mean, how many of us honestly can say 20+ years ago that we foresaw the prices of even the Mk2 Ez now let alone the Mk1's.

I had a 92 RS2000 fwd. Really nice car to drive, but traction and understeer could be an issue. 4x4 fixes both issues but replaces them with a lack of urge.

 

I'd have another early 2wd one If I could find one without terminal rot.

A good few years ago; I had a FWD  one of these for two weeks to 'fettle' a long list of ailments, for its owner; an English pal of my Dad's - it was rightly hanging underneath, due to him moving recently to 'the west' here - shite roads... he had some midly-disturbing UK private plate on it; cant remember what it was/meant to 'say' - he explained it was his ex-wife's doing; putting that plate on it - it seemed to infuriate the locals here....

 

. I could not get ANY parts for it here; nothing at all, so I drove it up to my brothers place to 'sneak across the border' n buy all the bits from a very small n friendly motorfactors.... it was quite rapid I remember, n I hooned it about mercilessly for the two weeks, in between doing the various bits.

 

I worked 'in the trade' at the time - uncrashing newish merc n BIMMERS -general consensus with everyone either in the trade, or 'a bit of a car nut' anorak was 'those cars were/are total shit... ill though out idea by Ford Marketing n lashed together  by ford to appear in the showroom quickly'...

 

One story I was told, was the shell had 'very little, if any strengthening' - the '25 years in the trade' panel beater  told me this, n told me a fellow panel beater had one, n jumped a bridge on the way to work as they were 'very late' - allegedly neither of the front doors would open when they arrived at work, the shell had flexed n twisted so much, so they climbed out the sunroof...

 

The old mans mate eventually sold it for €100 to the local scrap magpies as it got too rotten n he couldn't get parts for it....

Not to disagree with any of the learned opinions above but I would have this even if they are a bit shit. I was 14 when these came out and I have always liked the looks. Seems like I'm not alone given eBay prices so you shouldn't lose too much on it.

 

Mates dad had a Sierra with the 8v twin cam, it seemed like a good engine compared to the pinto sierras.

A pal of mine had one of these 'back in the day'. Being a Ford man through and through, he cherished this thing and it really looked the part.

However.. all was not well. It popped its engine at 60k for no apparent reason (hole in the block) but the sadest thing was, it literally crumbled faster than you could weld it up. It finally died at around 11 years old and I felt sorry for him. Two owner car, garaged every night without fail, polished every month etc etc.

It wasn't a good car, I'm not sure what sort of steel Ford were using in 1991, but I don't think there was much metal in it :)

They did rot pretty severely. Mine was 3 years old and already had a tiny bleb of rot by the fuel flap. A friend had one around 96-7 that needed serious rot repairs around the windscreen and sills.

 

Shame really as they were a great usable hot hatch

My OCD neighbour had a dark blue one when they were new.  He used to take the wheels off weekly to polish the unseen part of the rim. I think I hated him, for no other reason than this fact.
