Pete-M Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I would rather buy a set of matching part worn Michelins or Contis than a set of new Linglongs or BCTs. Work replaces tyres at 4mm. Half worn Michelins grip a lot better than the new Westlakes that replace them. The Michelins also last a fair bit longer - we often don't replace the original tyres until 12k when they're about half worn. The Westlake jobs tend to be knackered after 10k - when the OE tyres would still be legal for a few thousand miles. Also, most of the cheap tyres tend to be noisy as hell. Wanlis make Ã…Â kodas sound like the wheel bearings have collapsed.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 It seems unlikely that that tyre place has got a genuine 550 Spyder in any condition. I'm not an expert but I think there were less than 100 made and up and running ones change hands for millions, even a basket case if one turned up( possibly LilBastard itself, as it disappeared) would be unlikely to be entrusted to people that think XM s and Metros have the same suspension.Possibly a replica or some variety of 356, themselves quite valuable these days.Is the chassis an Austin Healey?
Lankytim Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Yes the chassis is a Healey, well done! OK, it wasn't a spider, but the hard top version. Good job it's got a roof actually as it's the only thing connecting the front and back together. This place get's most of it's part worns from Germany but apparently the next big source of used tyres is going to be Japan. I'm told that tyres have to be replaced at 6mm and whenever a car changes hands ALL the tyres need to be replaced with new ones by law, even if they're virtually new anyway. Not sure how they'd police that TBH.
lisbon_road Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 How can you replace tyres at 6mm? They start with 8mm, some last only 10K miles (assuming replace at 2mm or so).....so that would be replace at 3333 miles or so. If some lasted 20K miles that would be double at 6666 and so on. So put the lot in a ship and flog 'em to someone else? Is it just me?
Lankytim Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 That's what I said to the guy but he recons it's a new law over there. The Japs do have odd safety rules regarding cars such as impossibly difficult MOT's that render many cars scrap after a few years of being on the road. That's why so many get exported- I'm not an expert on Jap MOT's though. Does anybody have the facts on this?
Lacquer Peel Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 It sounds quite strict and expensive, no corrosion allowed on springs or shock absorbers, etc. Lots of 'citations needed' here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor-vehicle_inspection_%28Japan

Most Japanese cars have no chance of passing it once 5 or 6 years old but it does provide New Zealand with a wide variety of odd Jap market runabouts for very little money. Would imagine various other parts of Asia have a robust population of oddities too.
Lankytim Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 ANY CARS WHICH FAIL THE TEST MUST BE EXPORTED OR CRUSHED.
Uncle Jimmy Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Hence my Toyota Levin. I've got the import certificate, 1999 I think, so it's already spent more than 3/4 of its life here. I've noticed there are less part worn tyres on the Bay as I've been looking for pairs of 165 80 15s for my Ovlov.
Pete-M Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I think Germany still insists on new tyres every five years regardless of tread.
Lankytim Posted February 20, 2015 Author Posted February 20, 2015 Just noticed that one of my new tyres has been mounted inside out, I.e the inside is on the outside. It's a non directional tyre and I don't think it's going to make any difference. Still, I'm lucky to be alive. Lacquer Peel 1

Leyland Lawrence Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I have just spent a shade under £1000 on 4 new tyres for the 2010 Z4. Rear two at the limit and front two are so easily damaged due to wretched low profile tyres that they both have sidewall bulges. Got 20k out of them which isn't bad but staggered at the cost to run a modern car.
lisbon_road Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Agree, and the waste too. I heard some story about someone with a 4WD BMW thing that got 6K out of the tyres. Apparently BMW stumped up for some more but what happens next time? And the time after that?
Lacquer Peel Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Decent tyres for my sister's boyfriend's modern Citroen diesel hatchback cost +/− £150 a corner. Bring back 185/65/14s.
twosmoke300 Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 New tyres for a New Holland t7050 came to 6k 3 or four years ago ! Crazy
captain_70s Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 OEM tyres for my Corsa D were £120 each, Dad's Cooper S costs £260 a corner... In comparison the Triumph costs about £40 a wheel for brand new rubber and I currently have dedicated winter tyres on the 1850HL and all seasons on the 1300. Hardly worth the hassle of part worns at those prices! Lacquer Peel 1
UltraWomble Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 . Bring back 185/65/14s.Bring back 135/70/13's - £12 a corner on Conway remoulds. Lacquer Peel and warren t claim 2
Albert Ross Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I just reshod the marital Volvo with 4 Matador (Continental Budgets) 225/45/17Y MP47s for £208 all in. GO me. The LR tyres are £194 a piece..... I buy them "used/pre-owned"
Lankytim Posted February 20, 2015 Author Posted February 20, 2015 Does it have a thicker outer sidewall for protection? Yes, but it seems to be on BOTH sides. I did a bit of googling and it seems that the inside/outside stuff relates to the bias of the tyre, if you put them all on the same way the car would pull in that direction and drive round in circles so they have to be fitted correctly to cancel each other out. It won't make any difference with it being on the rear and being the only "biased" tyre on the car.
beko1987 Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I baulk at the cost of new tyres, but if I was ever rich enough to get new I would! I shod the meriva in new tyres 2 years ago, through a deal on I think tyre shopper 4 tyres (forget the make) fitted at national tyres for £180. This was soon after we bought it, and all the tyres were awful on it anyway. About 30k later, one had to be replaced last year as she ripped the sidewall out on a kerb, £40 from the local tyre place by work, and only cos I carried the wheel there as I'd just got the car on stands for something. 2 rear ones need doing now through a bout of creative wheel swapping (front right has had the outer edge scrubbed almost off from when the tracking was out, rear left has a tiny nail in it), will get those changed in the summer, possibly for new ones again tbh The beauty of part works for me is if I pick a screw up on the m40 it won't cost me a fortune in wasted tyre...
Parky Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Used to pay £110 per corner for run flats for the Bini - that hurt 205/55/16's for the Leon - Dunlop Bluresponse were about £65 each Getting Mrs P four new boots for her Fiat tomorrow. Falken Sinceras, 175/65/14 flavour for £45 a corner which is far more like it. I remember when 14's were considered big!
Cavcraft Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 £40 each for some brand new OneLungBollockChops 205/55/16s last week and to be fair the grip is pretty good. UltraWomble 1

r.welfare Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I remember hearing a bloke at work 'bragging' that a set of tyres for his Audi Q7 were £1500.
