New POD Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Will a BMW MINI Generation 1 Bonnet fit into the boot of a Generation 1 BMW MINI ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-R50-MINI-Cooper-BREAKING-SPARES-Bonnet-Engine-Power-Steering-Pump-etc-/261745268319?fromMakeTrack=true I have found a bonnet in the right colour. Cheaper than fixing the old one. Will it fit in the boot?
fordperv Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Why not pop up to collect and swap it over there and leave your old one there for the scrap man, it's what we did for a lad who popped up for a mondeo bonnet in his mondeo
Richard Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Unlikely, as the bonnet on a BINI is the full width of the outside of the car. As Fordperv has suggested the best way is to fit it on the spot. I've done that a few times.
New POD Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Great idea people. If he leaves all the 'bits' on it we can avoid any disassembly.
HillmanImp Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Alternatively can you not strap it to the roof? I have done that several times brining bits back from Autojumble etc.
Pillock Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Even if he doesn't want to have your old bonnet lying around for the scrapman, fit the new one on the spot and then take a battery grinder.... chop the old one down the middle, it'll go in the boot then! tooSavvy 1
EssDeeWon Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Alternatively can you not strap it to the roof? I have done that several times brining bits back from Autojumble etc. The film Clockwise springs to mind.
gm Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 why not take the bonnet off your own car and see if it will fit in the boot before you leave home ? I'll be amazed if it will fit, the boot on those minis is tiny, even with the seats down
Taff Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 take your own bonnet off and drive there like that, fit the new bonnets and tada! michael1703, Pillock, SambaS and 3 others 6
New POD Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 My current idea is to fit the MX5 boot rack to the Honda and strap it onto that.
Bren Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Have you tried hammering a bigger socket over it?
UltraWomble Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 God knows but I once got a Xantia bonnet and drivers door into the boot of a ZX brickwall 1
UltraWomble Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 take your own bonnet off and drive there like that, fit the new bonnets and tada!A variation on this idea, drive there, remove your bonnet, fit new one, drive off quick leaving seller with your old one (which he can weigh in)
purplebargeken Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Take nubile female with you, distract seller with nubile female. Fit bonnet, dump old one with seller, scarper with nubile female. I think that this would work ok.
beko1987 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I had this when I sold a door from my Puma to someone. He turned up in his Puma, and it wouldn't fit, so we arranged for him to come back another day and we swapped them round, plus side being I could help him with the interior as he had my leather. He just stripped everything out bar the drivers seat and we fitted it A Puma bonnet fits in a Mondeo still saloon if anyone needs to at some point
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Take nubile female with you, distract seller with nubile female. Fit bonnet, dump old one with seller, scarper with nubile female. I think that this would work ok. I'm not sure the Mini demographic is susceptible to distraction by females, nubile or otherwise. tooSavvy 1
New POD Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 Decision is made. I Printed off this http://freemanualservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/BMW-Mini-Cooper.jpg I cut out the bonnet from the paper, and whilst it on paper will fit in sideways, half of it will stick out the back. I'm buggered if I'm driving from West Brom to Formby (via Derby), with the hatch half open. I also attempted to fit the Mx5 boot rack to the Honda. The boot is too wide. So I have a roll of carpet and some ratchet straps and I will strap it onto the roof of said Accord, through the rear doors. I will take photos, obviously. As regards the demographic, I know what you are saying. But just think Metro Turbo, and it's all very similar. Now, do I also invest in all the bits that are attached to save me pissing about (An extra 75 quid for 2 headlights, the grill, the plastic wheel arch trim, the sound proofing and anything else that's part of the bonnet) ???? UltraWomble 1
ruffgeezer Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 That or offer him to leave yours with them attached and don't risk buggering anything up during the swap?
Pillock Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Pick up another Mini on the way that doesn't have a bonnet. Drive to bonnet sellers house. Fit bonnet, drive home, swap bonnet onto your car, sell second Mini. HillmanImp, Fabergé Greggs and alf892 3
Albert Ross Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Why bother. Any money you spend "improving" said "BINI" will be lost within 24 hours, as the values are plummeting. Go to the pub instead.
New POD Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Why bother. Any money you spend "improving" said "BINI" will be lost within 24 hours, as the values are plummeting. Go to the pub instead. Who cares ? It was dented whilst in my care (although I was actually on the beach with the dog, and I'd left the car in the car park), and my wife wants it repaired. I could take her to the pub and get her pissed if I want "a bit of fun" with her, but since they changed the rules on consent, that is no longer an option even to married men. I find, making her happy when she's sober works wonders. This will be worth 6 months of hanky panky with her. It will make her very happy. brickwall, r.welfare and alf892 3
New POD Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 Well, yesterday on my birthday, I took myself off work 2 hours early, and headed to Wolverhampton, to said breakers, on my way home from Derby to Liverpool, where a glass of something awaited me. I took one look at the bonnet, and the surface finish, and drove home without it. It had been re-sprayed at some point, and possibly it was raining. Or high humidity. There were 100's of tiny 'pips' (plus a few runs) which meant the economics of buying a bonnet to save not having to paint it, was lost. I don't blame the breaker for telling me it was perfect, but I may as well buy a new pattern bonnet off ebay for £130 and paint it.
mercrocker Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 How much hanky panky is at stake if you buy her a proper Mini and go off and collect a new bonnet for that instead? You will find that will fit.....
New POD Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 We have owned 4 proper minis in the past. (and 3 Metros) . It is unlikely that a divorce wouldn't result shortly after something with a A series. Hence why we also own an MX5 and not a midget.
Parky Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Can't you cut the bonnet in half, take it home, and reattach the two sides with a racing stripe? Practical and simple to do - just don't lift the bonnet! New POD 1
