Volvo 760 TURBOT DIESIAL. Shiters opinions?

Has it started pointing north all by it's self yet?

DIdn't the SVM break a 760 a while ago? not sure what they kept, but I'm sure one of them will be round shortly.

940 headlights are different but fit without issue, easy to tell as this one has a pair of 940 headlights. Mine had a mix of headlights, all of which were fucked.

I have a spare driver's side 940 reflector in my Volvo stash. I imagine it would fit a 760 :)

I sent CMS206 a box of Volvo headlights which included a pair of 760 items. They look the same as 940 jobbies but the lenses and reflectors are different.

YO!!! Here at last are a few shots of my second shite acquisition in the space of a week!!!! I have shelled out a lot on 'shite costs' this month so am gonna have to tighten my shite belt soon otherise I'm gonna have loads of cars and nowt to eat.

Anyway I drove this thing back from London to Nantwich with an overnight stop in Oxford. I calculate a fuel consumption of about 32mpg so not brilliant!!!

Its quite an experience to drive. What I will say is, at an 80mph cruise its probably one of the most comfortable, refined cars I've ever been in. For me the benchmark so far for motorway use was LankyTim's XM 2.5 diesel, the ride and refinement of that car at 70-80 was quite extraordinary, but this is pretty much as good. The engine is turning over at 3000rpm at 80, so its not super lazy, but the straight six layout means its very well balanced so theres no sign of any engine thrashage in the cabin. Thers almost no wind noise and the ride quality is excellent, the big fat tyres soak up small imperfections a treat. The transmission locks up above 60mph so theres no 'slush' when you want to overtake or whatever. Its dead easy to suddenly find you're getting a bit close to 100mph, it really is a treat on the motorway.

round town and on the backroads, its an interesting experience. I drive that Primera GT every day, and that car could be used as a driving school car, its so easy and viceless to drive. You decide when to change gear, the change itself is slick and easy, and the power delivery is linear with no particular peaks and troughs, your speed is pretty much directly proportional to how hard you press the pedal. This on the otherhand, defo requires you to learn how to drive it properly. The power delivery is not linear at all, its properly sluggish off the line until the turbo starts to spool up. Also you have the self-shifting box to contend with, you want it to change up soonish so as not to thrasj the lorry engine, but not too soon as you will lose all your acceleration!!! Unlike the Primera you basically just have to 'get the hang of it' in order to make swift smooth progress, otherwise you can be fighting against the gearbox and turbo all the time. However thats not a complaint, its a machine innit and theres a lot of satisfaction in becoming skilled in the use of a machine. By the time I was driving it round Stoke yesterday I was finally getting the hang of it properly and preserving momentum, keeping it going and making decent smooth progress through the traffic without thrashing anything.

The interior is BLACK. everything is black inside, including the headlining, which is hanging down at the back and needs re-upholstering, possible with something a little less sombre. However its very comfortable with excellent visibility and a nice driving position. Also the stereo is amazing. Its got a JVC head unit with the most ridiculous scrolling graphics display I have ever seen, it makes the sony 'ZAP' stereos look like the pinnacle of efficient industrial design by comparison. it scrolls all sorts of ridiculous shite on the screen about what it can do, while its playing the radio or CD or whatever. Despite looking shite it sounds flipping brilliant, I dont know if these cars have any amlipfiers in them or more than 4 speakers or what but its easily the best-sounding music system I've ever had in a car, really clear with deep bass and capable of going louder than i would ever want to hear without it sounding shite! I was grinning like a twat listengin to the old Daft Punk CD as I was driving about yesterday.

The engine is the old Volkswagen lorry engine, its flipping ace this. About 130bhp or something, the turbo is a fairly massive thing:

its got 135,000 on the clock so probably about 25% through its service life I'm guessing. Sounds bob on, the guy said it had had its timing belt done about 5 years ago but had probably done less than 8000 miles since. I will probably see about changing it cos thats still pretty old and if I ever come to sell it will need to be done. It started up almost immediately depsite a fairly hard frost on Sat morning so I guess the heater plugs are still doing the biz OK.

Anyway it was up for sale cos it needed some welding for the MOT and the people who had it decided it was time for Albert to move on. They showed me some photos of the rust and it looked fairly unpleasant but I couldnt really make out what I was looking at, so yesterday I pulled it into the workshop for a proper look.

Apparently the battery tray was quite bad.

P1060921.jpg

Hmm, yes I see the problem here

P1060919.jpg

Also there are a couple of holes under the floor:

P1060920.jpg

The floor pan is holed on both sides just above the outrigger thing. This looks like a pretty easy fix though the seats and carpets will no doubt have to come out to access it properly, then it can be repaired properly from the top.

I inspected everywhere else and found no other problems, no more rot, split driveshaft boots, rusty tubes and pipes etc. Well actually i did find a diesel pipe that was a bit rusty so I cleaned it up and put a load of copper grease on it, thats about it though. Good!

P1060930.jpg

I spent the rest of the day fixing the battery tray. Chopped out all the grot and welded in a new bit.

P1060931.jpg

Not the neatest repair i've ever done but its OK and all the rotten stuff is gone, will seam-sealer and paint it today hopefully and cross that off the list.

Other jobs that need doing are:

  • Scabby front wheels
  • Sagging rear headlining
  • new OS headlight needed
  • new front numberplate (old one cracked)
  • timing belt

I've got plenty of time for doing this stuff as i am gonna put the Rover 75 on the road for a month or two then this will probably take over as I would LOVE to drive down to the bo11ox museum in it this summer. could even drag something back with it on the fitted tow bar. ITS GONNA BE AN AMAZING SUMMER OF SHITE Y'ALL!!!!

INcidentally shite logistics meant i had to get home from the workshop by public transport yesterday. The nearest train station to the workshop is nantwich, about 3 miles away. there were hardly any trains from there, but there were loads fron Crewe, about 8 miles away. I chucked my bicycle in the boot of the Volvo and pedaalled to Crewe at the end of the day (after starting the day in oxford, driving home, then driving up the workshop and fixing the battery tray all afternoon). got to Crewe and i'd just missed a train, the next one wasnt for 1.5 hours. So i decided to pedal on to the next stop or two where the train would go. After runnign over a dislodged cats eye and nearly chucking myself off the bike i got to Alsager where I bought a pizza and ate it while waiting for the train in sub-zero tempeartures, still wearing my boiler suit and garage clothes. Got on the train and paid £9.10 for a 20-mile train journey, thieving wankers. Got off at Uttoxeter and found that my planned route included a 'private road' so I pedalled along the side of the fuggin A50 dual carriage way for a mile and a half. At the top of the doveridge slip road i found I had a bastard puncture so had to walk the last mile home. Got home about 11pm and slept till 10.30 this morning. SHITE LIVIN'!!!!!

I like it. Does it have an intercooler? 130bhp Is about the same as what a similiarly aged 525 td had so not too shabby.

If you go into the menu on that stereo it will have the option to turn off 'demo mode'. I've had the same stereo and it's proper annoying until you do. Be aware that every time you remove the battery, you'll have to do it again!

You need to build yourself a little suitcase moped so you can return from drop off shite expeditions at speed (well 25 mph)

120bhp and 177lb-ft of torque I believe. I didn't get around to it on my D24TICs, but they respond really well to a bit of pump tuning apparently. The guides linked here are for a Peugeot 405 TD but apply to almost any old diesel with a Bosch VE pump.

Approval rating: off the scale.

I have a D24 timing belt in my stash by the way, if you want it for £postage.

I didn't realise you were stuck there yesterday, Mr_B, I'd have happily run you back had I known. Anyhow was v.impressed with it in the flesh, you certainly had a very good buy with that one.

Been up the garage today, welded up one of the rusty floorpan/outrigger things. Turned into a right carry on but its sorted now.

I'm looking forward to seeing this in the metal. Maybe we could have an A framing diesel time trial or something.

What a lovely car. I hope it brings you a lot of joy :)

The rusty areas on your car (common grot spots on the Volvo 700) were rust free on The Volvo when I bought it (it was only 13 years old at the time), so in accordance, I slathered them with Waxoyl and have done so every year since. As a result, everything is still GR11 :-D

I really like the idea of this old Volvo with its hefty old truck engine ( that turbo is huge!) bet it sounds brilliant underway.

My old Merc w123 300d was a great old thing to chug about in- 3 litres and 80bhp doesn't sound fun but was satisfying to drive around its limitations and get the best out of it.

I'm another fan of the engine, having the detuned (95 bhp) version in my van. An extra 30 horses sounds like bliss, as I worked out that towing the Stellar to Shitefest last year I had an all-up weight of around 4500 kg...not exactly swift!

Just caught up with this thread. Looks superb that. The 700 that wanted to be a 900. That later front end used to catch us out all the time when selling new side lamp units. Quite modernish at the front and still all square at the back.

Sounds like an interesting drive with the auto box, I thought it would make it easier. Old school auto - needs more gears!

Is that a Vanhool T8 in that pic as well? Mmm.

HEY VOLVO LOVERS

Been doing quite a bit on this, hopefully will get the last of the welding finished this weekend. Can anyone advise me about the following. If I buy a replacement 940 headlight off eBay, do I want one like this:

PartsImage_60918310-47f8-4a3b-a9d1-72f6d

which seems to have an integral housing for the indicator unit, or this:

$_85.JPG

....Which doesnt? Is there an easy way for me to tell without spending an evening going up the garage and dismantling mine?

Posted

I thought they all had the integral sidelight mount? Easy to pop your indicator/sidelight off and look I guess.

Posted

F reg? That could be an IRS one :) they're great.

As for diesel autos and mpg, I get 35-40 mpg on a run. (Mercedes 320 cdi) Around town anything from 17-30 mpg depending on traffic / traffic lights. MPG improves significantly once the engine has some heat in it.

This. Those are both 940 units but all the ones I've seen/had have the sidelight unit attached.
