Moderns: What Would You Have?

I just put 3 years old £10k and biggest engine into Autotrader and came up with this.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201412019356468/sort/pricedesc/radius/1500/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/price-to/10000/page/1/postcode/mk109aa/engine-size-cars/3l_to_3-9l/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_3_years_old?logcode=ppost-17414-0-75802300-1418002677_thumb.jpg

I could live with that, in fact a couple of months ago I did a similar exercise for real. 5 years max £8k budget , had to be under 5 years for licensing and I ended up with a 59 plate 530d estate with 110,000 miles,12,000 miles in still seems like a good deal and its putting bread on the table.

unfortunately a civic tourer dont fit the £10k limit so i'll have to stick with wot i got lol

Dacia sandero tce ( the 3 pot turbo petrol one) I wouldn't buy something nearly new, moderns are so complex a warranty is essential. For less than 10k you'd get a mid range sandero with a 7 year warranty.

TBH, If 10k is the limit there isn't much out there that inspires, I'd feel short changed if I'd spunked 10 big ones on a base model UP! KA or ADAM. Plus they all have bloody stupid names.

It may not have any badge prestige but the Dacia makes you feel smug about how much you haven't spent.

Have vowed never to buy a new moderns, so a second hand one might look like a VW Beetle or a modern Mini.

The Beetle just appeals, don't know why. The Mini is kind of growing on me sort of like a fungal thing. Or a biggish sized Dacia.

Righto, just off to prepare my own bonfire and stake. I'll leave my AS pass at the door on the way out to the burning at the stake thing.

I would most probably go for one of those VW/Seat/Skoda UP things in base spec on steel wheels for added shite value..

It would have to be in red or blue as I would be to tight to splash out the extra £300 for a colour I want.

There's quite a few moderns I like such as the VW scirocco or Beetle or the BMW 1 series and I like the Mini and I also like the Audi A5 and TT but I doubt if one could be had for the 10 grand 3 year rule plus I only like N/A petrol lumps which basically rules out any modern anyway and diesels are a no go for me.

So I better stick with Shite plus anything over 500 quid to me is excessive anyway lol

Put it this way: Think of all the lovely old motors, or even fleet of them, you could buy for £10k.

OR you could have a crappy 1.2 Polo that everyone else has got. It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

I was in this predicament recently and it took 6 months to find her a car because I was just so 'meh' over all of them.

I quite like the Fiat 500 and I quite fancied one for myself to take the pressure off the Anglia. Easy to find a really nice one under £10K and less than 3 years old. I also quite liked the Prius because it just did stuff satisfactorily, it was comfy and was completely inoffensive - as in, I don't think I found a single thing that sat there screaming annoyance at me like I did in all the other cars I tried. Harder to find for £10K and under 3 years old though.

I think my gripe is why there are so many features that are so badly designed in almost all new cars? Most manufacturers have been making cars for the best part of a hundred years now, so why do they continue to make such glaring ergonomic design errors? This is usually basic stuff taught in the first year at design school, but yet it manages to get signed off and accepted in a premium product.

Absolutely no idea. Totally stumped. About the only thing that might get me mildly interested would be a dacia duster. On steels.

you could add £250 and buy one of these:

BUT ten THOUSAND pounds. That's a huuuuuuge amount of cash

Citroen DS

Astra H coupe

Astra VXR

Astra Nurburgring

New shape Range Rover

Fiat 500.

And probably loads of others. I'm also deadly serious about the Insignia.

Dacia Logan mcv and spend the rest on a ton of waxoil. I recon these might well be rot boxes in 4-5 years.

If you show me where the 3 year old ten grand Range Rovers are I'll mortgage my house buy everyone of em give you a £5000 finders fee and still double my money.

I was going to say Santana PS10 but can only find one on an 08 plate.

One of those VAG 1.2 TSI s with a DSG gearbox, quite fancy the Seat Ibiza Estate or Fabia.  Couldn't quite bring myself to drive a VW or Audi though.  Seeing as it's impossible to get a test drive is an automatic though will probably never happen.

Probably something in a Volvo as they have managed to retain a tiny bit of personality. Petrol as all modern diseasels etc.

The only real experience of very modern cars I have is my mates 10 plate Octavia vrs pez. Does 40odd mpg and he does nutter it when he can, its not goneechanically wrong in the 20k he's had it and its a nice place to be inside.

He wants to swap it for a derv vrs though, although doesn't talk to me much about it now as I keep making ticking noises when he talks about then go BOOM wallet rape every now and again for comedic effect...

I have no idea which aberrations incorrectly referred to as "cars" were made over the past three years. Honestly.

If I had the money either a top spec MG3 with leather-would have to be pre registered or a brand spanking new dacia sandero access- The bottom spec one i have a proper hankering for one of them at the moment

I wouldn't spend 10 grand on a car outside of warranty. Loads of tales on the 5 series forum of  "I bought this  530d for £10,000 now when I put it in drive it makes a mooing noise or the turbo sounds like it's full of gravel."  I couldn't sleep at night.

I was very tempted by one of those VW Up/Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo things as something to get me to work and back with minimum fuss and you can get a brand spanking new one for under £10k. However I then came to my senses and splashed out £400 on an old Yaris which does the job just as well (so far).

The family hack Octavia cost us £8k when it was just under 3 years old and is most excellent for waftage. Being the stupidly named Laurin & Klement edition (look it up, it is actually a little known piece of Autoshite history) it comes with everything. Can't really fault it to be honest.

If Dyson made cars, would you buy one?

No.

It would look like some daft multi coloured sci-fi prop, would be horribly noisy, "never need servicing" and overheat if the viciously expensive filters aren't changed yet again.

This is why I try to avoid one make forums, as I'm poor and need a car for work I just buy things and worry about it fucking up when it happens. There's never been a car yet that can't be repaired,it just depends how much you want or can afford to spend. My e61 came with a written estimate for £900 to replace the high level brakelight that has random bulbs flickering or not working, for the MOT last week I fixed* it for nothing with some black gaffer tape and a Stanley knife, ok it's only got the 4 centre bulbs showing, but it's MOT'd and no one has noticed. I could have spent £900 and gone whinging on BummerForumz or whatever. No doubt when the turbos fuck up Turbo Technics in Northampton will recon them for £300 or I'll buy some Ebay ones off a Lithuianian car thief - just because a car's newer doesn't mean the Autoshite mind set shouldnt be used.

Toyota Auris hybrid. Oft overlooked. Honestjohn likes them, would have 2 years warranty left, 7yr battery warranty left, 5 door, effectively automatic, no clutch, frugal, no tax, cheap insurance, anonymous, good ride, 60mpg summer ,55mpg winter.

Or any  V70 auto whatsoever and lie about its age.
