How far do you commute?

Many moons ago I had the use of a Forestry Commission 109 petrol and had to check the mpg, they expected 18.5. It did 10.3 over a month in depths of winter when it was driven on eggshells!

Best I've ever got local was 20 in a direct from MVS ex'mod FFR 109 ragtop with a new carb.

And don't even consider a 6 pot or a 12 seat Safari, about 12 to 14 local in top mechanical condition and careful driving.

Are you sure you're on the right forum? ;-)

In my defence it's not mine! And it's close to its renewal age!

I swear If I had my way I'd be using my mk2 Transit. Hopefully I won't get banned for making such a comment.

Did I mention it's not mine!

25 miles each way. There's a few routes I can take, but normally I head for j5 of the m40. If the M40 is fucked I can turn off before and go up the hill past breadvan72s gaff.

Handy cross has been a bit busier lately, and if I time it wrong the bypass backs up past Marlow, but I usually come off just before the traffic stops.

Was costing £60-70 a week in the xm, now about £20 in the zx, although its a lot less comfortable now...

It's definitly a massive perk of the job, not having to pay even to commute to and from work. I've no idea how much it actually saves me a year but it must be a fair amount. We're not allowed to use the company vans for personal use though but it's not something I'm going to moan about.

The vans are also maintained, taxed and replaced every 5 yrs, all at no cost to the employee! I consider myself very lucky in this respect.

I reckoned I was saving about £2000 a year when I changed from a 16 mile commute to a job with a van in 2008, and there's been quite a lot of inflation since then. Between tyres, brake pads, servicing and other repairs there was rarely a wage that the car didn't take a fairly large chunk out of, fuel is only a part of it.

I do about 500 miles a week these days for work (office for 2 days, 3 working at home), I used to do 250 a day in my old job for 3 years (at my cost ffs  ).

I love driving but don't miss commuting 1250 miles every week!

Posted

5.5 miles (half hour) each way to the office.

Worst daily commute was when I worked in Chester. 24 miles each way but could easily take well over an hour to get there. On a good day 40 min.

Wigan was another bad commute. Working as a Nissan sales droid meant I had to drive a 1.4 Almera to work. 16 miles each way and i don't think that Almera ever managed above 25 mpg. At the weekends I'd take my 24v Carlton because it used less fuel.

Not me, but eldest sister lived in NZ and worked in UK. That commute was done 4 times a year as she worked 6 mths on and 6 mths off. She was very well paid too !

Currently (Since May 2014): I am commuting 202 miles on a Monday and back 203 miles on a Friday.  Occassionally I use the train, but for financial reasons it is much more cost effective to use my car.  Typically this takes 4 hours with a 15 minute stop.

Driving to station and getting the 1st train, on Monday and paying for parking (£8 a day) takes slightly less in time, but costs £140 a week more.

L37 to HP2

In the future (When Security Clearance goes through in the next few weeks) : I will be commuting from L37 to DE24. This is 105 miles and takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Train takes 4 plus hours For some West to East reason.

I drive a large diesel, which I don't use in the week  or at weekends - I cycle Tuesday to Thursday and use the wife's BINI or MX5 at home.

From tomorrow, my commute will be a 12 mile round trip, 6 there, 6 back.

29 miles each way, through Birmingham and down the M40 to Warwick.

Takes about 45 mins in the morning and 55 in the evening.

Usually use the Octavia 4 days out of 5 and the Pride on the odd day.

About 15 miles across country lanes usually. Bloody pain, used to live where workshops are. But it could be worse.

Posted

13.5 miles each way, have only been commuting for 6 weeks as I lived a mile from my workshop until recently.

Currently enjoying it as I drive very deserted country roads and don't see another car for two thirds of the route.

The roads are very windy with plenty of wildlife so its quite nice at the moment but I'm sure I will get fed up of it eventually

18 miles each way at the mo but hopefully moving to somewhere within 2 minutes of work so obviously a 3.9ltr V8 is the obvious mode of transport..

Well, makes sense to me anyway lol

I used to drive the 17 miles each way to work but the 36 sets of traffic lights eventually got the better of me.I now have the pleasure* of sitting with the great unwashed on the train every day!

10 miles each way and I do most of that by bike. The rest is shared between the Anglia and soon the Ami. I think me and the missus' combined mileage is about 7k per year.

You guys who commute big miles to a permanent place of work must be crazy. I HATE my commute eating my life away.

50 mile round trip mostly through the Black Forest with plenty of alternative routes to add interest so not too bad. Use motorbike when not icey. I got an audiobook subscription when I moved out to the sticks which is a lifesaver, makes me feel its not completely wasted time although I often end up sat in carpark at work at 7 in the morning waiting to get to the end of an exciting bit.

2 miles

but but I did do 10 years of working all over the place

150 mile round trip each day, luckily just 7.5 miles each way in the shonky XM then the train does the rest. Had enough M6 to last a life time. Might try and drive the whole way one day just to see how far I get before the tow truck is required.

Used to work at CAT / Perkins, that was a mere 221 miles each way, needless to say I stayed away 3 nights and worked from home lots! :-)

Posted

66 mile round trip each day. Then another 64 mile round trip in the opposite direction to my lady friends!

Posted

10 miles there 10 miles back, along a empty twisty bumpy b road, it's bliss after being a service tech for 7 years doing over 1k a week and why a good handling car is important to me.

[smug mode] I no longer have a commute, as I have managed to retire [smug mode/]

Despite no longer having to go to work I am still managing to rack up around 1000 miles a month and don't think I go anywhere. I'm getting sub 20mpg from the Land Rover, I need to get out less.

I knew a bloke once at work, got a transfer so his commute was from Chesterfield to Wetherby on the A1. A good 2 hour drive in a morning I'd say with the traffic. But he said they'd pay him another £2,000 a year so it was alright.

Posted

7 miles on a Vespa PX through maximum central London congestion.

I'm usually pretty awake by the time I get to work...

Posted

i commute 200 miles a day from the deepest country to the big smoke, by train else I would be asleep at the wheel.

done it for over five years now.

Posted

I fall out of bed and walk down the stairs to the front room. Home based. It's the future I tell ye! Used to do 110 miles each day though.
