Me and my dad had this discussion the other week about the cars that where classed as bangers in the late 80's but now would fetch silly money that he owned. Rover sd1,ford escort mk1 & 2,Vauxhall magnum,Granada mk2 ghia x etc. Granada mk2 he had was a light metallic blue with white alloys, skirts and front valance with spotlights, full leather and a/c. Shame there isn't any pics to my knowledge bar maybe the magnum. Would love an sd1 myself. Looks lovely does yours Dave

The Hurricane - nominally my ex-husband's - that I so loved in the mid 90s - bought when it was about 3 or 4 years old, sold 2-3 years later. Bean cans now :(

I have another Hurricane, currently slumbering in storage due to me being so ill for so long. Really though, I wanted *that* one.

Er Escort mk4 3 door 1.3 black with XR seats, thought this was amazing.... cavalier mk2 1.6 hatchback red, somehow the engine 'broke' after changing the ht leads.

A totally worn out 1986 Micra mk1 1000 red and rust, went mega uber fast but had no breaks, strearing or clutch. Loved it, girlfriend (now wife) refused to drive it and realised it had to go when a guy at the petrol station genuinely said "nice car"

One owner Fiesta mk2 Ghia X that was mint given to me as a birthday present. Got stopped by dvla checkpoint type thing and it was crushed for no tax. It wasn't worth much then :-(

Last I can think of is the capri I killed by leaving on the drive of 3 houses. Still out the somewhere though

French cars in UK by DSdriver, on Flickr

Both of these!

The big 15 went back to France I believe but I don't know if it still exists. I doubt very much whether the CX familiale is still around. I bought it when it was six months old. The dealer never mentioned the fact that it had a complete new roof on it and it used to chew through tyres at the back. God knows what the previous owner had done to it.

My 1 escort 1300E.

Bought for £300 in 1991, the twin choke weber was long gone, along with most of the underbody. But it was lovely to drive.

I sold it to my cousin as it was utterly rotten, he then set fire to it while he was welding the underside.

I remember thinking I had paid over the odds for it, now cheap mk1 escorts are like cheap houses - there are'nt any.

1992 E36 325ise auto. With dealer fitted Alpina body kit & wheels. Made a lovely noise and only options it didn't have were aircon & leather. Sold it in 2009 because the rear arches were getting very crunchy and it had a tendency to go pink very quickly if left outside. Replaced it with a 1995 E34 525, another great car but mine was a lemon!

Sold my last mini in about 2001. £550 for a tidy red C plate with all the chrome, revolution wheels and stage 1 kit - dread to think what the same is worth now after scene tax...

The two I miss most are both VW Polos, of all things: a 1988 breadvan CL in jade green that I misguidedly swapped for a complete lemon of a Citroen BX, and a 1992 G40.

Dave, that is the Mother Of All Tide Marks and I salute you.  Looks like an SD1 Allroad, with extra bonus points for the CB aerial.  Well played.

1987 Mk2 Fiesta 1.1 popular plus.

Deflowered the missus in its back seat. There are many reasons why I wished I had that car still.

Wish I never sold this one:

Killed the engine because the airfilter-housing was cracked underneath (where you could not see it) and I drove through water a bit faster then normal. It got water in the engine and died. If I knew then what I know now, I would have put another engine in it. Was a fantastic car, this 2000 HDPIC Galloper II.

I share your pain, all of you!   Especially if that's a Triumph Hurricane Caffiend is referring to....Mr Shitpeas already knows what a nice car the Oxford was!   My own regret was scrapping a genuine 1959 Mini complete with the little lights in the rear pockets (I presumed a giffer had added them, not realising that the tinpot little switch panels really were BMC issue...).  Oh, and the Zephyr 6.   I am "hoping" to add my Farina to the list as I have, even as we speak, just stuck it on Ebay this morning.   I sometimes wish I had kept some other stuff but, really, its all for the best.   Apart from that Mini....

I still have the ones I care about, the one I wish I never sold was my e30 it was a lovely car, i sold it to my uncle who promised to care for it, the fuel pump went so he offered me it back, but then because he had offered it to me and not my other uncle the other jealous uncle kicked up a fuss, then it got scrapped

I loved my Rover 75, though I was bored of it at the time so moved it on. It came up for sale very cheaply recently but I don't have the room and a saloon/25 MPG is utterly impractical for me at the moment. Only other car I really would have back is my Metro GTa, even though I only drove it for about three months, every mile was superb.

A life. Instead of spending all Saturday being stupid and generally being a cock I've had to go round the super market with a mardy wife.... Oh not that kind of thread :-)

So many!  My PA Velox, both my Cadillacs, my MG Maestro, mk5 Cortina, Volvo 244 GL, Daimler Sovereign S2, Daihatsu Charade XTE, Polonez... but I would quickly run out of land if I had kept them all, and we are going back over almost 40 years here for some of them, it's a long time to keep a car you aren't using.

This.

Well, that one was terminally rotten. I had another, DDM 798C, which is still on SORN somewhere.

There are more "Thank fuck I got rid of that" cars in my past than "I wish I still had" cars.

Longest list is the "wish I'd got one of those when they were still cheap and rust-free"

Posted

I have to say that every car I've got rid of - whether sold of scrapped - has been absolutely on its last legs, or in need or serious mechanical attention way beyond my ham-fisted skillz. It says a lot that no car I have ever sold has current tax on it, according to the government lookup thingy website.
