Thought/suggetions, Shitefest 2015 or AS roadtrip

Seriously though- we need to ensure the idea is affordable both in terms of time and money to folks who want to go

Good point, I think France would probably have to be the best part of weeks trip, a couple of days driving each way.

Scotland is a days travel each way for most so could be done on a long weekend, possibly extended a bit if anyone fancied a bit of a drive.

To be honest, if it's held in Scotland I won't be going as it's just too far for me.

You said that about Yorkshire ffs! Where's your sense of adventure man, I've already started saving for France and I've got to go through another country to get there!

I have plenty of adventure! I'll see nearer the time, it depends on what car I have, money and if I can get the time of work!

I have access to this yard but the only problem would be you cant pitch tents as the ground is not earth, it does have electric and water now though and even a toilet in the office ;-) also has a four wheeled lift if you don't mind the odd dent from the forks.

I could also get use of a field down by the river at a mates farm.

the only problem with these two options is they are on the border so although in Scotland its still a fair drive north to the best roads.

I have family on Skye with some property, but it's pretty far.

Since getting the Maestro back on the road, distance isnae a problem. The timing is, however. Unfortunately, the 2014 one was slap bang in the middle of my exams and there was no way I could have spared the time to get there. Make it pretty much any other time of the year (apart from April/May and the beginning of August) and I'll probably be able to make it!

Assuming it's in the UK of course. Despite living 20 minutes from Dover, my passport expired years ago and I can't be arsed to apply for a replacement.

Skye would be my vote. In late May, Or any other time, it's spellbindingly ace. The further you travel and the more out-of-this-world the landscape, the greater the sense of achievement. Skye is definitely more ootw than France.

I'll explore some options in the Angus area if that's not too deep into bandit country.

If Shitefest is in France I'll have to get a passport or a gas bill or something organised which sounds unpleasant. Otherwise I'm up for it wherever it may occur.

Skye is indeed stunning. They may refuse us entry. Could meet in the borders and have a mass drive up-country perhaps? Can always have a smaller meet down south - perhaps raid a show or somesuch.

Can I make a suggestion, how about canvassing who is actually likely to attend and then base the location on the highest concentration of shiters?

On the downside this means there will never be one anywhere near me as I think there are only two or three shiters to cover the whole of Lincolnshire.

Can I suggest a common sense approach to any Scottish AS meet, wherever it is held, i.e., NAE MIDGIES.

Skye is a hoor of a trek. It would be four or five hours for me and I'm one of the "locals". Some stunning roads to get there though.

Angus would be a good call if it's not too far north for people. I'd be happy to lend a hand if Drum can come up with a location. The programme at Devil's Bridge worked pretty well so I would say a similar timetable would be the way to go.

You could do it in two stages.

Base camp somewhere centralbelty, then up and overnight up north. Back to base camp, then head home

I'm in Newark, which is nearly there.

Someone in the BX Club (who many have been biassed as they live there) calculated Lancs as being the 'centre' of IngerlandandScottishlandandTheWelsh. So perhaps somewhere in the Lake District would be nice? That is all I have to contribute, I don't know anyone/anywhere there, there's shitloads of campsites who might be willing to cut a group deal though.

Actually, given Trigger and Wuvvum are always complaining that everything is too far away, I thought we'd decided that they were organising SF2015? ;)

Me too.

Yes you do ;-)  ME!  Also, Mouseflakes, warninglight and a handful of others.  If we were to put our heads together I'm sure we could find something.

Where ever it is I'm guessing that I can't come cos our first child us due in March and I reckon it may be bad form to fuck off and play cars . Gutted cos I enjoyed Wales and dad is thinking of getting the Lna back on the road and would have taken that.

Isn't there a folksy car ferry in the Lake District? Imagine it packed full of shite.

Posted

Yes, there is, from Hawes Side to (I think) Bowness, although I might have those termini wrong.  IIRC one end of it is handy for Beatrix Potter's house, and the approach at that end is very scenic.  I've used it, about 20 years ago.  In a Polonez!

FRANCE!

There is a high chance that I will be in Australia at the time of the next Shitefest but a drive to France from Australia seems like fun, especially if I do my usual trick of driving a completely untested car.

By that reckoning, you'll make it far as Nepal before breaking down. Someone will them follow you to a lock-up in Turkmenistan where you will leave the car and get the train home. Then, a trailer appears and the car ends up in Devon

Someone mentioned the Lakes. What about Keswick or maybe a holiday to Workington? Carlisle is also dull enough, but at least it's on the motorway.

Loads of the central Lakes is crammed with tourists going nowhere fast, the roads are tight and busy, even on a mid-winter weekend if the beeb's not handed out weather warnings. But there're loads of off-the-beaten-track parts to Lakeland which are equally beautiful and almost empty. Southern end of Coniston and south of there (Furness) is relatively free of congestion and proper old Lakeland with real boozers, Dunnerdale is quieter still and leads to Hard Knott and Wrynose passes which although short are fearsome. Whenever I've organised a trip to the Lakes for old cars, I've tried to cross the ferry mentioned above (Bowness, Ferry Nab) early on a morning before the queues build and stop at John Ruskin's old house by Coniston Water. The steam ferry (passenger) calls in there and there's a decentish cafe.

Newby Bridge (see map below) is about 20 mins or less from J36, M6.

Not forgetting the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow and TWO steam railways, one of which is on the map above, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite.  Grange-over-Sands and Ulverston are pretty, Ulv has the added attraction of the Laurel & Hardy Museum, housed in an old cinema.  There's also the Ulverston Canal, for those inclined to a gentle stroll in the countryside, and a car boot at the cattle market.

I'd suggest that the lakes are likely to be heaving- so things like keeping a group together/getting a table for 20 etc can be problematic.

That said-its a nice part of the world.

We could rent a house for a long weekend as a base?

Bit of sideways thinking might be required if we want a party booking anywhere.  I suggest looking on the fringes rather than the main Lakes tourist-traps.  Don't forget there are industrial/commercial towns all along the coastline, where the tourists don't really go.

Further consideration: how about the Sellafield Visitor Centre?
