Partridge Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I've been window shopping on Gumtree and noticed the asking prices seem to be more sensible than ebay's buy it now prices and slightly cheaper than Autotrader. There dosen't seem to be anything that screams pikey/dodgy as f**k about most of the cars on there. Is there anything terrible about Scumtree I don't yet know? I've been told it's worse for mongs and you don't have as much legal protection on there as you do with ebay? I'm not seriously considering anything I've seen on there yet, just wondering...
overrun Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I love to give it a shake and see what fruits drop from it's branches. [iNSERT LEMON QUIP HERE] Partridge 1
plasticvandan Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 i bought a fiat panda on there (was shit, but thats my fault) and sold an old atco mower on there, seems to take a while for people to see your advert if selling, imagine its good for buying tho
DVee8 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I have sold a couple of the kids,bikes on there,bloke turned up,payed and left no drama's .
saucedoctor Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Sold a couple of laptops via Gumtree with no dramas. Bought a tablet last Friday, nice and easy.
They_all_do_that_sir Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Bought and sold plenty of cars and bikes through gumtree. Generally cars attract more mongs than bikes in my experience.I tried to sell an xbox on gumtree which was a hateful experience, IVETWENTYQUIDANDABADGERCANITAKEITTONIHGHTANDPAYYOUNEXTWEEKM88 As a buyer you can generally tell by the advert how painful things are likely to be. LOADS of traders posing as private sellers but theirs are the overpriced ones anyway I've found a lot of the mongs are gr8 for buying off as they need cash money now however the trade off is the car is more likely to be bodge central As a seller general rule of thumb is over a grand on the windscreen hardly any trouble, however the lower you go the more idiots text. I've sold a few around the £300 mark and that's a whole world of WILLYOUSWAPFORANXBOX this makes me sound like a trader :s I just get bored easy and rarely keep something more than a year
Junkman Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I've tried to sell a bicycle and a car on Dumbtree. Never again.
dollywobbler Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Buying is the same as anywhere - buyer beware. It's selling on Gumtree that tends to bring out the mongs. Though the Rover attracted pretty much sod all attention on there. Partridge 1
Junkman Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Though the Rover attracted pretty much sod all attention on there. In hindsight, I would have been glad if that were the case when I listed my stuff there.
cort16 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I had a guy pester me about a spare wheel I was selling for 15 quid. He said he was going to come and get it and never showed then when he texted back 2 weeks later and when I told him it was sold he got arsey.
Junkman Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Guy who finally bought a 40 year old ten speeder race bike from me for 70 quid expected me to refund him after he broke it a week later.Told him where he can shove it and how far up.
Cavcraft Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Very, very hit and miss. Some sales are smoother than you could ever wish for, other times it's a fucking absolute nightmare. sporty-shite and Partridge 2
HillmanImp Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Well, the problem is you are selling to the British public and most of them seem to be idiots. You only need to read the comments section after ANY news/celebrity/social media post to realise that. Best thing to do is make millions and just throw stuff away or give it to charity. Cavcraft, Uncle Jimmy, Essex V6 and 6 others 9
Bren Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I have tried and failed to sell wife's fiesta. The problem with selling cheap cars is that you will only ever attract bottom feeders - the halibut and catfish of the world who have no money but loads of time to piss sellers off. I should have realised that gumtree would be pointless - when I advertised our galant on there a few years back somebody actually asked if there was any petrol in it! That tells you everything you need to know. Drive it and scrap it seems best - when you see your car cubed you can be satisfied you never flogged it to some mouthbreather who has more children than teeth. dugong, sierraman, Rusty_Rocket and 12 others 15
PiperCub Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 "Mouthbreather with more children than teeth" Holy crap - love it, I gotta remember to use that one sometime, priceless!!! (The boss is wondering what I'm laughing at too - so I showed him). Partridge, myglaren and dugong 3
mercrocker Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I very, very rarely get to sell anything. If I no longer need it I know somebody who does. I would rather give stuff away than deal with a single mong and from my limited experience with Gumboil (only got involved cos one of the off-spring was selling a single bed and buying a double) it seems to attract even more single-cells than Ebay does. And why is everyone there on some god-forsaken new estate you can never find?
vulgalour Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Gumtree has netted me some neat things for very little money or hassle. I've never used it for selling. Could be worse though, have you tried navigating Preloved for anything?
meggersdog Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 When I used to frequent household auctions I used to buy a lot of bicycles and a fair amount of golf club sets.I found Gumtree was better selling general items locally than Ebay (and it was free). The trick is to repost the ad every couple of days then delete the previous one.Selling cars, as a trader, was pretty hit and miss especially with the "make an offer" button you couldn't get rid of.Then this year they began charging £15.00 per car.The trick here is to advertise in the Vans and Trucks section which is still free. Not bought anything off Gumtree so no comment on that side of things.
AlabamaShrimp Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Not been on there before but now I've had a look there's loads of cheap crap. Shame is all seems to be collection only and miles away
Lankytim Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Isn't gumtree owned by egay? Would explain the money grabbing antics.
pilninggas Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I bought and sold tons on gumtree - bought a few bikes and punted them on for a profit too. Sold my primera on their in July with T&T for £250ono; lots of twats phoning up asking if i wanted to swap for an iphone or a TV (wtf) and one guy wanting to know how much history it had (square root of fuck all). Sold it to a guy who saw it and lives two roads up.
myglaren Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 As far as I can recall, I have never sold anything. Daughter bought her Rover 75 on Gumtree and found it an altogether satisfying experience. She also bought a set of ladders last week completely hassle free.
Partridge Posted October 9, 2014 Author Posted October 9, 2014 OK...like ebay then...hit and miss, nothing to be (too) scared of.Thanks chaps.
sporty-shite Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 It's just another way of getting your advert out there. Unfortunate fact is that certain things attract idiot buyers. Like the MG ZS I had a while ago. Got a text message stating "£150 scrap." Replied in a lightly sarcastic manner, and was greeted with abuse and the threat that "your address is in the ad, you won't have a car to sell". PAYG SIM and made up local postcode now. Still, I've had good experiences since, so it's not all bad. Thinking on, I've still got that fella's phone number. Any good things I can do with it?

Still, I've had good experiences since, so it's not all bad. Thinking on, I've still got that fella's phone number. Any good things I can do with it? Yes. Yes there are. For starters you could fill gumtree for lots of dopey adverts using that number. Speed boats, mobility scooters etc. all for £150? Sign him up for lots of callbacks for insurance quotes can work well There's the old school "phone jim for a good time" graffiti in the public bogs I suppose. Or maybe not. When I've been wronged* by one of these mongs I tend to spend 10 minutes day dreaming about fantastic methods to wind them up. Ultimately I realise I'm too lazy and leave it at that Vince70 and mouseflakes 2
drum Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I found it ok for selling cheap stuff like a dining table for £20. A GS 500 I had on for £275 attracted some plebs offering playstations and assorted crap but it did go for all the money pretty quickly. An astra took longer to shift and every time I renewed the ad, the same prat phoned within a minute of the new ad going live offering half the asking price. It sold on New Years eve. Anything I sell is a massive bargain of course... brickwall 1
Hendry Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Sold a mk3 Golf on there once about 5 years ago, up for £400. Had a few messages saying "thinking about giving you £225 for it" etc and replied back "think on then" and others with awful spelling "what's the boddie like on the moter?" Didnt bother replying to these. But still the car sold within 3hours of me posting the ad, and close to asking price too.
dugong Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Life's too short. Porn is in HD now. sporty-shite, oman5 and brickwall 3
Volksy Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I've just sold three cars through Gumtree in the last couple of weeks, the 205 and 306 went very quickly, and the 106 only took a couple of days. You can normally weed out the mongs who text and ignore them. It's a shame they now charge for more than two ads a year, but I guess you just set up a new email address and sign up again to post more.
