Or a Citroën Dyane. Friend of mine once transferred a full BX estate into his. I was amazed.

Lack of self-levelling meant it took on the attitude most cars do when fully loaded, headlights working like aircraft search lights. You really need gas springs and self-levelling for an estate to be really practical over any distance. An S124 is as ideal as a big old Cit, even though the spare wheel isn't under the bonnet.

Right, the Toledo project is now adverted for sale. We'll see what happens.

I had the use of one of these for a week, delivering post around the Coventry Chrysler factory ('cause the Avenger was broken).

The Simca was great for this work because, with that window wound down, the post in the boot area was so easy to get to.

^^^ How did that work for security, window winder on the outside? Anyone can get in...

It had a lock on the boss - I remember the dad of a school friend struggling for an age to unlock his.

Today, my estate car transported a fridge, a freezer and a tumble dryer at the maximum legal speed on less than £1 of fuel in absolute comfort.  Estate cars ftw.  Sorry, no pictures but by now you all know what a Xantia with a crapload of stuff in the boot looks like.

Although they are terrible , the Vectra C estate is a proper load lugger . Ive been reliably imformed by a customer of mine that you can get 2 coffins in the back of one . ( guess his occuption ) He has a Saab 9-5 estate now which is pretty big

Maybe I'm stating the bleeding obvious but here is my top tip for carrying big stuff. Instead of trying to tie the tailgate down just pop one or both of the gas struts off and the tailgate will stay down on its own.

EFA

More comfortable than trying to have it off in the back of a Metro

I guess I do need one then.....

How about an exclusive* and spacious* DAF 66 estate in Autoshite racing brown ?

No ? Thought not ;-)

I knew you'd mention a Daf at some point. Don't tell me you have a Daf combi now as well!

Posted

I had a xantia estate which was ace.

However, to put into perspective how big modern cars are, the 2001 mondeo that replaced it could carry more - and it was only a hatchback.

Anyone fancy a Toledo project that could be bolted back together in about 4 hours, taxed, insured and driven home.

Posted

yes.... but not if I have to give you money or do the driving.

Yeah, bought it from an eccentric chap who seems to change cars on a weekly basis

There is absolutely no way I carried over 30 kerbstones in it whilst it was mine... or was that the other white one? I forget.

Lets wheel this old dear out again

No need to ever worry about the possibility of conceiving children in this estate as your other half will only have eyes for the lovely blue on blue interior with carefully matched blue carpet off-cut in the boot. I'm sure the suspicious looking tide mark is nothing to worry about vs owning any of the scabby French tat that's been floating round this thread.

(I don't dislike all French cars, just everything that isn't a pug 406 Coupe)

Mahoosive load area as well

I've had an interested PM on another forum about the Toledo, so let's see what happens and I seem to have spotted a tidy Volvo 240 estate as well. Fingers crossed.

My dad has had so many FORD estates (3 cortinas, 3 sierras, and 2 focus's) that I struggle to buy a Ford, and opt for unpractical everytime. It's rebellion.
