Renault 16 - The Motion Picture - Remake (p7)

They were just for illustration purposes. Non project versions available for less than your budget.

Ah, fair point. Simca 1100 nice, but might as well go the whole hog and have the tomato-growing potential of a Rancho. Pug 304 is a maybe but I think I like them more than Mrs Skizzer does.

Herald meets her approval, as does Allegro estate. Chevette? Meh, she says, and that's the end of that. Viva looks too much like the hated mk2 Scirocco, apparently - which means if a nice droop snoot comes up, I may have to go and live in it ;-).

Maxi gearchange isn't very good but is perfectly usable.

Perhaps the Gearbox took a lot of flack from critics, because it was five speeds and they only had four speeds and needed to find fault with Maxi's innovation.

Anyway, back to French things: early R5, ideally with the R4 gearchange. Seats down, happy dogs.

I'd forgotten your original criteria. Shirley an Ami 8 or GS Break? Both mechanically tough and reliable.. Rot-free cars are well under £2500.

GS break would be super. Can't get a much lower boot floor than that. I simply must own a G.

GSA breaks are not scene-taxed, you should find a pampered, rot-free example for under £2k. They're ace to drive, engines are very long-lived (300k not uncommon, but a rot-free 300k GS UK is), just the gear oil change and the exhaust front pipes which are fiddly.

Saab 95/6 or Volvo Amazon waggon. I don't think either of these are longer than a Yeti, I may be wrong though.

Tbh if there was a possibility of a Rancho I wouldn't be looking at anything else.

My suggestion is an early Sierra estate, can't be much longer than a Yeti shirley?  Keith would be happy enough in the back and you've got roof bars for even more load lugging ability.  L@@k, they are so cavernous these lads managed to fit two horses in the back...

But this being Autoshite a natural choice would be one of these, preferably in this condition :-D

Not quite that hateable:  428i.  I'm done with modern diesels.

Sierra wagon is nearly a foot longer than the Yeti I'm afraid.  Who's got that metallic red Ghia one on here now?  That's gorgeous.  But no.

Montego likewise, plus I like the saloons but the estate is very hearse-like.  Can't summon up any enthusiasm for a Maestro, sorry - we had an early 1.3L when I was 14 and it was truly miserable - I'd wanted a Mk2 Cavalier.  Hang on, Mk2 Cavalier estate - ultimate low sill, the bumper goes up with the tailgate - but aren't they extinct now?  Also too long.

GS Break is a good idea, will run it past the missus.

Not sure about a Hunter/Arrow, but the previous generation art deco Singer Vogue estate would be very fine and has a split tailgate as a bonus.  Yum.

Avenger wagon is about Yeti-sized (blimey - all modern cars are phat etc), so I guess that's a maybe too.  There was a nice one in a white room recently wasn't there?  [Googles KGF]  Yep, sold.  Probably for too much money.

Actually KGF have recently sold every single car on my list, I think, including a Rancho.  Wish I'd been paying more attention.

Just get an R4 bought and stop messing about considering anything inferior!

The day KGF stick a Metro Chairman in a white room with an inflated price tag is the day they'll win me over...

Toyota Tercel Wagon? Low loader and tall back end. Another one that's probably extinct though.

The Eventer estimate appears to be 10x budget, but it gave me an idea.

You already own the base vehicle.

In addition you will need;

Yaris Verso:  Very sensible I'm sure but, ah, just no.

Lynx Eventer is most certainly very high on my want list but

in need of restoration, it's currently a non-runner with no MOT

Estimate (£): 25,000 - 30,000

says a big fat no.

Homebrew Avon XJ6 estate:  I like your thinking.  With my welding skills though it would end up more like this:

a.baa-wooden-trunk-of-a-car.jpg

Panda:  Thought about a Panda as they're GR9.  Bit small though.

Who said Saab 95/6 estate?  That's a good idea too, will go in search of one in that brilliant 1970s moss green colour they did.

Like Mr Lobster says, I should probably shut up and get on with buying a Renault 4.

...or a Rancho.  There are a couple of tasty ones on Leboncoin.

Need to sell the Yeti first.  Will sort something out in September.

This is within budget and the convenient side of Paris.  59k km on the clock, promise of fresh ticket.  Prefer the steel wheels to these alloys, but these are original because X-PACK super-luxe.

If this is still for sale when I'm free to collect it in September, it's MINE.

I think it was the Boutique driving lamps wot swung it for me.

I promise a full report. Am feeling like a small child on the day before Christmas Eve: only two sleeps before I get to unwrap it...
