Just a quick heads up about a documentary about a Bolton scrapyard on tonight. Good for shite spotters? Sentimental value for me as I remember clambering over stacked cars as a kid in Campbell's salvage yard which is/ was next to the one featured.

Cheers I was just wondering whats on the box tonight!  :-D

I don't think it is a 1 off,i have just put it on series record.

Well that was shite! More like a documentary about a dick ed called Boyle, besides I could hardly understand what they were saying.

Oh the suspense of whether they were all going to get paid or not, i nearly fell off the edge of the sofa.

I didn't see one oily dog, no burnt out motors, no gaggle of eastern europeans all crowded round a shitty old BMW or Audi, no cars propped up on wheels, and worst of all bugger all interesting in the yard.

There was a Visa, and a Calibra. I quite enjoyed it, figured why I will never work in a breakers yard - I was wincing as they damaged panels and put windows through, I'd want to save every piece of everything and sell it. A door hinge for a 1997 Micra sir? Of course I have one!

What paint code do you need?

I watched it, and quite frankly, it would appear that the staff, were rejects from the prison system, and the boss hasn't a clue about cash control, or any real business plan.  Still makes BOLTON look better than it really is.

Interesting, but no shite, which was probably just as well. I agree a lot of stuff did seem to go in the waste rather than for parts - wiring looms and dashboards for instance. Also I don't think dangling that Corsa engine on its side would do it any good.

TV makes everything shite.....Take something as promising as Nigella flouncing around the kitchen, pissed up in her nightie.   Still fucking boring....

I rest my case.

I've only ever bought engines and gearboxes when they have a warranty, never know if the car's been flipped over or something. Maybe sideways while not running isn't too bad but you never know.

does nobody proof watch this type of program before airing them ?  1 minute the red crv has a smashed rear end then later it looks perfect

Tell me it wasn't just me. Was that orange lady HOOVERING her dog?

I need to go on TV then. One minute overweight and ugly, then later look perfect!

I wish....

Watched on Iplayer as I have no licence.

They smash up stuff better than I'm driving.

My other thought was "overstaffed".

Missed that one..... Any gearbox shots?

I enjoyed it, though I keep getting distracted by trying to spot what's in the yard. As you say, stuff a lot newer than I'm driving about in!

Posted

I watched it for 27 minutes before realizing it wasn't Peter Kay's new spoof documentary, for one thing the acting was far too convincing and for another I actually laughed a couple of times.

Posted

Its TV. Not watched it TBH, but would bet that it is 90% made up and 10% real. Lots of shouting and stuff perhaps? Bah.

Posted

It is exactly that Bob, they try to create edge of the seat issues like will the staff get paid this week etc etc..Or the new menu's being printed for the onsite cafe which had some wrong prices in it...

I mean come on, FFS. Wonder what's on next weeks episode....

Will there be enough bog roll to go round?? The cafe nearly runs out of tinned plum tomatoes?

All these things are basically this. The people say the words and the programme makers arrange them to suit the story they want to tell.

I wouldnt be able to sleep at night if I knew I had to take £25k a week to "Break Even" fuck that!

It did seem overstaffed, they had an I.T. guy, an "Engine Specialist" etc etc

I still have no idea how they need 25k a week to break even.

Even if their 40 staff are on 300 a week each (generous for Northern zero skills prisoners) that's 12k in wages. Call it 15.

What would a yard in Bolton be, 1k a week tops?

Insurance etc can't be much? I fail to see what their costs are unless they're paying off massive debts from setting the place up initially.

I thought the logic was a bit flawed, they were crushing cars still with the wheels on them and with engines etc still in them but yet claim to be a car breakers, rather than general scrap metal merchants. I also thought they were trying to take too much on, no car breakers I've ever been to has had a 2nd hand car sales pitch nor actually crushed cars on site, they've simply had a load of breakers lying in the main yard not piled yet for easier access to the parts, sold parts off the cars, depolluted them, removed the wheels, cats, batteries etc then after a month/6weeks it goes on to a pile of cars nobody wants anything else from and these get collected and taken away to be scrapped, certainly nobody strips dash looks out unless a punter wants it. They only have cars people have actually called up and asked them to collect for scrap of drive ins, they haven't gone to auctions to buy cars to scrap, surely they'd be far too dear, scrappys usually pay sub £100 and I've never seen a car at auction go for less than £175 plus fees, Also if the owner is so bad at running a business as depicted then how the fuck has it remained in business for 20years, seems sensationalist bullshit to me.
