New posh shite at Trig towers

I've decided to start a thread on this even though most of you may have already seen posts about it in other threads.

Last weekend whilst heading to a show near Colchester i saw this tucked up a driveway, I've fancied a Merc for years but I've always ruled them out as being too expensive to own and run, this one was up for £995 with mot until May 2015. It looked tidy under the dust and cob webs and got me thinking.

On the way home from the show i popped back again and spoke to the owner, he was a older chap who was emigrating to Switzerland. It turned out that it was his sons car who couldn't drive anymore so they garaged it in 2009, as he was emigrating he said he needed it gone, so after a look around I managed to haggle the price down to £650!

So fast forwards to this morning, I went down to collect it, I paid my money and bought 6 months rent from the local post office. Considering it hasn't been used in 5 years it drives brilliantly, in fact it's getting better and better with use. The auto box is lovely, it's a proper cruiser and nice and quiet too.

It's done 118000 miles but it doesn't drive or look like it, everything works other than the electric aerial but i think thats because the CD player hasn't been fitted probably, I'll bung a better one in it. It has lots of history, back in 1995 Ipswich Mercedes sold it for £13450 with 41000 miles on it!

Anyway less talking and more photos, these were taken before It had been washed and cleaned.

The interior needs a good clean but it's a very nice place to be, rubber mats cover the original MB floor mats.

I also saw this E reg Rover 800 in a driveway too local dealer plates fitted. Cowies of Colchester. Shame about the rubbish photo mind.

The service book is missing but I have a pile of old receipts for service work, it was only done not long before it was parked up, I've bought a full service kit for it so I'll be doing that on Monday.

The autobox is great, it takes a bit of getting used to but it seems to nip along well if you wind it up a bit, then again it just podders along quietly if you just tickle the pedal. I like it!

Seat nets are not saggy! You really have got a good'un there!

Might want to have a look under the plastic side cladding and see what the jacking points / tubes are like, normally a grot starting point.

If it was garaged the whole time, probablly ok, but if it was sat outside a while worthwhile clearing front, rear and sunroof drains.

Congratulations on the purchase.

I take it Der Panzer will be at Shotley?

You will have to practice a German accent and listen to Kraftwerk now Triggs :)

Nice Merc Trig. I've always had a keen eye on Merc 190s. Auld_lad Sterling nearly bought kne years ago but didn't.

Any chance of you going back and snapping a pic of that 800. I'm getting twitchy here.

Sadly I don't know the next time I'm going that way but I'll see what i can do. This is the same car back in 2009 so they have had it a while.

Strangely E123 HNP is showing as a 1987 825 Sterling and untaxed since 2004?.

That does look rather impressive.  Even the upholstery looks clean - normally Mercs this age with light-coloured trim have at least one mystery stain somewhere on the seats.

I ran a 190 for a year or so, do you find the massive steering wheel sits quite low? I am 6 odd ft talk but skinny and it annoyed my sometimes.

I had no probs at all with mine though I think I read on interweb that the wishbones/ball joints fail often and you die, but I never changed mine and I lowered it and put silly wheels on and I am still alive.

Probably just internet donkey botherers causing a storm but maybe worth a check.

I sold mine to some pineappler of edition38 and a few months later it was for sail for pennies as he had sold the wheels and broke the key in the ignition which I think is another weak point.

Shame as that had full my history and I went over it and it was mint. I love um and some colour combos on them look right, like yours, I reckon you could double your money easily on it. Will last till the dinosaurs come back as well with the odd oil change.

Looks a lovely brief-enjoy it!

Good to see some quality execuchod on here.

That's a lovely thing, Trig.  The wheels and that colour suit it perfectly.

From when Mercedes were driven by people of quiet good taste, rather than the outside lane wankers with tattoos that buy new ones these days.

Interesting thing ive never seen before

furry muff suspended from rear headrest, is that a car cat bed/small dog bed?

I read that too on the 190 Forum, this has just had a new ball joint fitted for the MOt so hopefully be ok for now. I have just found something thats broken with it... No dash lights at all! I'm guessing that it's mostly likely just a fuse, I'll check that in the daylight.

It's basically a dog basket which straps over the headrest which 'er indoors got of the internet, it stops your seats getting all dirty and it's also got a lead attached inside so that you can clip your dog into it and stop him from jumping out or getting thrown around in a accident, plus is all comes apart so it's machine washable.

Does it have a dash light dimmer? If so the resistor could be on 'the Fritz'

Fixed it. a quick google showed that the trip reset knob is also a dashlight dimmer switch if you twist it.

Yay, had a feeling it was going to be summat daft like that. That's 2 things you thought were broken on this that actually weren't. Happy days

I don't want that piece of shit Triumph you're trying to flog but put me down for first refusal on this when you get rid.

Nice. 190s are still under rated by most of the Merc people and still good value if you can find a good one, which that seems to be.

Well bought for that money, even if you have to spend a few shillings fixing it you'll get it back if you decide it's not for you.
I'd love one of the 2.6 versions, one day... ;)

That looks well sweet that, Trig.

I reckon these Mercs without much colour to the paintwork look ace with clear indicators, and repeaters. I'm probably in a minority around here, but meh.

Well bought! 190s are my favourite of all Mercs. Don't know why, but there you go.

I like the old orange perspex - it indicates the metal hasn't come from Beluchistan and the Merc bean counters were still deciding on their plan of action.

Were the original wheels available? I even like the plaggy trims for the steelies! Congrats on a smart purchase!
