Just spotted this in the local paper:

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/11312973.Classic_car_stolen_by_distraction_burglar/

I have a bad feeling about the outcome, but you never know.

A Hampshire pensioner’s beloved classic car has been stolen after he was targeted by a thief.

The 1967 Wolseley was taken from outside the 71-year-old’s home by a distraction burglar.

He had gained access to the OAPs home in Shirley, Southampton, after visiting to say he was interested in buying the car. The burglar then took the keys to the £5,000 car before driving off.

Last night the owner of the vehicle, who has not been named, was said to be distraught.

He has now issued an appeal in the hope of getting his pride and joy back.

The model of the car is a 16/60 and has the registration of PPD 665E.

Chairman of the Wolseley Owners Club, Phillip Ladanowski, said: “It is very unfortunate to hear someone’s pride and joy has been stolen and we hope it is recovered soon.â€Â

PC Paul Martin from Redbridge Hill Police Station, said: "This car is distinctive and unusual and I'll appeal to anyone who has seen it to get in contact with us.

“The victim was clearly targeted by this man. Thankfully he has good neighbours around him who have helped him since this happened.

“If you recognise the description of the man, do call police, we’d welcome any information.â€Â

Police are searching for a man who is believed to be white, in his 40s and is 5ft 10in.

They say he has a tattoo on his ear and on the side of his face, has a stocky build and has very short greying hair.

Anyone with information on the theft, which took place between 9.30am and 10am on June 17, is asked to contact PC Paul Martin from Redbridge Hill Police Station on 101.

Good news. Let's hope it's still ok and not another "Peterborough Metro" though.

That was so very fast that perhaps there is less chance it was trashed - and it was sold to be used on the circuit so at least they would not have deliberately crashed it.

Thief doesn't sound very bright.

He had a tattoo on his face, I think the assumption that he was not to bright was already there.

Good news its back. Hopefully in good nick too.

Hats off to the Oval Chat buyer who reported it, he's probably out of pocket on it but has still done the right thing.

Omg! Stolen by a banger racer then saved by a banger racer? Does not compute!

Hey, great news! Not the first time the internet has helped find something.

Seriously though, it's reached the point where Farina owners definately need a secure garage.

Trigsta can you copy and paste that article? You have to be a member to view it... Ta.

That's a wonderful outcome, I suppose the cowardly and vile nature of the theft left the car hotter to handle than Rolfies laptop.

Intentional irony? :-)

Banger Racing is Pikey Polo.  I assume you need at least four prison tats before you can enter.

Hats off to the chap who went to police to be honest. I suppose it shows a modicum of decency in the "sport"

Aye. Someone doing their best to undo the reputation somewhat. Hope they get the prick that nicked it. Preying on old folk is just disgusting.

That is excellent, I am so glad to hear of a banger racer in a good light it just proves there is good out there in the sport, well done Mr banger racer

Aye, it probably would have been very easy for him to get away with racing it anyway.

from ovalchat:-

Before all the rumours start flying. I bought this car and have it in our sales stock now. We bought it with the registration document and have a purchase receipt. We have contacted Hampshire police and they are now dealing with it. After reading the newspaper article, and after dealing with the guy I bought it from, there is probably more to it.

If it has been stolen as the newspaper article says, then it will go back to its rightful owner. If I am out of pocket, then I will pursue the bloke we bought it from. Hampshire police are dealing with it now and the car has been taken off sale. If the article is correct, then I hope the guy who nicked it gets all that's coming to him. End Of!!!!!!!

Seems reasonable. Can imagine he is pissed off about it as well.

Posted

Absolutely, since he'll have to wait till the thief goes to court and he might be forced to pay it back at £5 a week. Might.

I wonder what the extra story is though. It has a V5 and everything. If someone distracted the bloke long enough to get the keys, how did they get the documents? Very lucky if they were just lying around.....

Maybe the old guy forgot he had a car and couldn't explain the tenners under the mattress.

When my 66 Datsun was stolen off my drive over 2 years ago, it was the Guys on Oval Banger chat who dobbed him in -and forced its return within 48hrs.

I think the vast majority are decent honest people, aghast as much as we are at some of the scum populating their forum.

I can make a V5C on my printer here, and the DVLA wouldn't notice a thing, if I'd send it off for a change of ownership.

The whole procedure, I mean even the official one, makes it really easy for thugs like this.

How often does it happen, that a racer buys in good faith a car that's offered to him, in exactly the same way, as the dealer bought this Wolseley, paperwork and all?

If he doesn't coincidentally read an article in some newspaper about the car being stolen, he will race it without ever suspecting anything being wrong.

The same goes for people buying such cars for dismantling and selling the parts, or buying them as parts donors for other restorations. In all these cases, the

evidence will have disappeared in a relatively short period. I'd say the thieves consider this to be the norm, and thus don't really take a big risk.

That it blew up in this particular case, is simply due to the coincidence, that the buyer was planning to resell the car, instead of racing or dismantling it.

If it wasn't a knock off VC5, it would not suprise me. Older people seem very lax about personal details My Granddad would write down his pin number and walk around with it in his wallet...
