Which shiters are lucky enough to own a garage/workshop

Recommended Posts

I have a small garage in my old dairy, mainly because the previous owner rebuilt it and changed the layout, making the bigger space an office, two workshops and a store room.

was like this when I moved in

Used the first workshop and put this in using the dexion shelving left by previous owner.

The store looks like this

Now there is a pillar drill on the bench, a parts washer and a big tool box, with all the power tools stored underneath.

2nd workshop is about 6x7 and looks tidier than this! It is effectively the tool room, with workbench with bench grinder and bead blast cabinet.

which means for winter storage I can fit in four cars (the fourth being the Fiat 126).

There's parking outside for another seven or maybe even, at a push, eight cars.

When buying new house, I spent a lot of time discounting ones that had no garage of note or lack of parking off road.

The ones I nearly bought went like this ...

garage under bungalow - 20x20 with toilet plus store room, office (16 x20) and another room behind 18x20, parking for seven

tandem garage 12ft x34 ft, up and over doors at either end, with hard standing at rear that was crying out for a car port, parking for five

parking for lots, two driveways, 24x12 garage office behind and store above, plus planning for 4 car garage

single garage, but room converted from double garage that was 24x20 (in a thirteen room house, it was heading to be reconverted).

I have a strange V shaped garage on my house - it's got a narrow door that is *just* wide enough to get my w126 through. Once in, though, there's enough room for the w126 and a 2cv parked at the other end. When it was built, someone took the decision of putting an up and over door at the other end (where it exist into my garden), which is great... means I can drive cars through into the garden should I run out of space in the garage and driveway.

You can imagine the pleased look I got from SWMBO when I suggested that.

I have a typical new build garage in that you can just fit a Fiat 500 in it if the garage is completely empty.

Unfortunately Mrs P believes the several thousand pounds worth of car should live outside whilst we keep a selection of useless tat nice and warm and dry. After all the bread maker, foot spa, juicer, and collapsible chairs might come in handy one day. We haven't needed them for the last ten years......

I have cleared the front part though so if anything needs doing I can get half the car under cover but haven't really got a huge amount of room - I couldn't have both front wheels off of the daily at the same time for example although a guy did manage to do the cambelt in there with about 3 inches of clearance. God knows how he managed it

These are all making me very jealous... In a few years i want to move, I'm hoping to get somewhere with a detached garage

This is part of mine, I've always wanted one that had everything organised and not a load of random shit just dumped in the corner taking up 1/2 the space:

Nothing is being stored on the floor - there are two other cars out of shot. I need to put a proper bench up as I just have a completely battered desk thing, and get the PC working.

I do have a garage attached to my house, but it's full of crap. I hope to get some of the crap cleared out of there later this year so I can get one car in the garage.

No garage at home, but a sizeable yard which is big enough for all my crap. Though I have applied for a lock up nearby to bung the Range Rover in.

When we moved here, downsizing from a 1980s semi with a garage, I had a massive clear out of spares as I had to fit everything into this shed....

It's not all bad though as a very good friend lets me use his workshop a few miles away, I help them out with their steam engines and other assorted stuff and they let me keep a few bits and bats there and work on my chod.

Currently I have the modern house garage, just about big enough to put a small car in

post-3477-0-98572600-1404497721_thumb.jpg

but no room to actually do any work on it and the drive is on a slope so working outside is awkward. (Well that's my excuse for not doing any work.)

My best garage was the one under the bungalow I lived in, it had power, light, central heating with a wc and wash basin, didn't really need the house.

post-3477-0-25844600-1404498123_thumb.jpg

Could easily get three cars in it and at the time I also shared a lock-up with a mate, so had room for another two/three, which meant I filled them up and never really had time to do anything with any of the cars.

I have rented garages in the past, but these rarely came with any power so were usually just secure storage (well apart from the two that got broken into)

When we moved to the current address there was a 16 x 8 "garage" and a half car port. These were soon demolished and I now have a 22 x 12 garage which stores the 323. :-D

The car port goes the full width of the house to the garage and is 10metres x 3,5 m - enough for two cars to nestle under and great for working under in all but the worsed weather. There is then room for one more car on the drive in front of the house and one on the road in front.

Am I happy with this space  :?  - NO - I want more room to store vehicles and trailers as you can never have enough storage - and currently looking for storage for two cars and two small trailers. Nothing yet though :-( :-(

I recently inherited the old house my grandma lived in. It has 3 garages, but one is blocked by my granddads 1991 Opel Vectra. So I rented 2 garages in a council estate nearby. So I will have 4 garages when we move there (by the end of August) and 5 when my granddad "moves". :?

Of course, the garages are small like they used to built them in the 1960s, without power, light or water, but they are relatively dry and in a safe area. So I am happy.

I've got access to my parents double garage which currently contains the Atlantic on the left side and the A55 Cambridge on the right. It's in a very poor state of repair, with a leaking roof and huge cracks in the walls. We've also got a double length garage with doors at both ends so cars can be driven through to the back garden and worked on, and this is the access to the main garage at the bottom of the garden. It's currently got my dad's Consul and my (broken) Austin A35 in it. Anything longer won't fit in there with the Consul. At the moment I've got the Maestro on the driveway and the Somerset on the front lawn.

I also rent a council garage in Canterbury which is useful for tinkering/car storage when I'm down there. It costs me £38 a month which isn't too bad for the South East.

My little paradise after years of kerbside snow ridden shenanigans. Had to move bloody house to get it but meh!.hadn't been opened in 20 odd years but some hard work and a 1960's kitchen unit helped. More shots of the abused Bmw soon. The Renault is not mine, I'm not that daft. Dog is the wife's.

My 1920's house has a garage 10' wide but only 13' 4" long, so no good for containing a car really. Plenty of room for parts and tools though. I can get 4 cars on the drive but no on street parking.

Spent all my working life to get to the happy place I am now. This is a couple of shots of the 6 car museum at the bottom of the garden. Workshop garage at the side of the house and parking for more...

Large professional* workshop located in Thornaby (Teesside -> up norf) which I've spent the better part of a year putting right and it's almost up to snuff. Just have to get the big two post lift I bought properly installed. Space to work on three cars at a time.

It's part of an old WW2 airfield workshop building. Lovely bit of old building chod smack bang in the middle of a new housing estate, yes the people in the house directly next door hate us but it's their bloody fault for buying a house next to a large industrial unit.

Would happily let shiters use it (and its tools) as long as they pay me in biscuits and cake. Also pies.

I would love some of the workshops/garages shown, when we bought how house I wasn't bothered what it looked like etc etc as long as I had some sort of garage.

This is mine when we first moved in.

It's slightly bigger than a normal garage so when a car is in I can get round the sides and work on it ok.

But now all my tools are in and what not it's a little more crowed but I still feel mega lucky I can walk out the back door bang some spice girls on in there and get to work.

Zig a zig a.

Capsuleboy appears to have the garage of my dreams. That GS is gorgeous! Any more shots of your collection?

I bought a three car workshop 4 years ago, recently renovated with a new roof, 3 phase, kitchen and loo. It was 35 grand and it was an actual garage back in the 1960's. I bought it because I had the money in the bank and there were various threats of banks going tits up so I went for it.

Today though I worked outside because it the weather was so good.

Usual production line house with integral garage for me. However its super dry and warm in winter and has power. It did a good job of looking after my car for the 2 years it was stored there.

My wife also has a lock up which is integral with the block in which her flat is, where her mum lives. It's huge and also dry but alas no power. It's now rented out after I scrapped the car I was storing there.

I rent a council lock up 10 mins from home. I have the use of another thanks to a friend. I also rent part of a barn in Essex. It's 40 mins away which isn't bad I guess.

I would kill for some OSP and a double garage. No hope of that in North London though. We hope to move but trying to get anything clarified with Mrs. PBK is like herding cats. One day though.

I have a decent sized unit, with three phase, water and a toilet.
Massive catch - Opposite a social club, so when it's nice and sunny outside you can bet Uncle Knob-head is outside shouting, swearing and throwing his fists around.
Other than that i have a decent neighbour and get to lend all sorts from Diagnostic gadgets to his car lift.
Shall post pictures soon.

How does it work with the local rates, insurance, electric and water bills?

I've been looking at doing this and the ongoing bills bother me more than the purchase price as that at least is an asset to sell and get the money back on.

At the moment it's classed as domestic and not rateable because it's not used for business. You can guarantee however that the penny chasing vermin local council will eventually find a way to get $$$ from me though. It's insured as a commercial property, about £250 a year.

I rent a council lock up. £22 a month or thereabouts. No power, just had a *Lovely up&over door fitted to replace the *useless side hung ones, and a channel cut into the concrete approach for the door to sit into. This collects water and debris, and provides a *nice awkward obstacle for my engine crane when moving my not inconsiderable stash of broken parts around. I also have 2 sheds at home, and a *driveway (rockery) with a stack of dismantled Land Rover Chassis' on it. (The parts belonging to them being spread around the garage, sheds, and garden.) I also have a Concrete prefab garage in bits, awaiting the funds to be able to lay a base, and make a 12'x32' unit, with a 8'x7'6" door. It was £100 and I had to dismantle it. :)

My dad had a massive war with his council to stop paying rates on his garage when he closed his business and the garage became a domestic garage. I think it took him about 4 years and christ knows how many visits off assorted 'officers' of this and that (to have a look at a 2/3-car garage) but eventually they capitulated.

As you can see it's the usual problem of width being O.K but I just can't get it in!

The benefits of where we are in Norfolk if lots of land and neighbours who don't give a fuck about you having more than one car.

Most of our working is done at our old house that we used to share with Beige1100 in a building that fits three cars with space to work, light and electric.

2 years ago we moved a few miles away, and it took about 18 months to finally get the 9 car garage built but the guy we paid to do it.

While waiting with a lot of help from some friends we rebuilt a 2 car garage

We also have a falling down 3/4 car garage but as a) the roof is falling off, B) the walls may well collapse and c) the cars are drier outside than inside we only have one car in there now
