I refer you to my earlier remarks regarding the suggestion that climate change is a recent phenomenon.....

Is it just me or does every high street picture from that era look effin' grim?

I don't recall it as such but I'd be aged about ten and utterly clueless about everything :-)

I figured it's either the January Sales or maybe just Christmas shopping.
Went looking for one of the shitshow that was Christmas Shopping down Oxford Street in that there London - but found this instead.

It's billed as "1959, Oxford Street" - there are some Christmas decorations around.

I reckon it's taken from someplace around the M&S at number 173.  It is looking down towards Tottenham Court Road - car trying to join from the left hand side of the photo is in Great Tichfield Street (now pedestrianised) - building to the left of that car is still there and looks prettier these days in colour :-)

Wot is the car? I reckon a Vauxhall Cresta or something but I have no clue on their stuff of that era?

If you call late 70s early 80s modern then so be it.

I was going to agree with you but, with 75% certainty the car in front of the VW looks like a Renault 16 to me, and with an optimistic 45% certainty there's what looks like an Ami 8 or Ami estate to the left of the bus in the same lane ahead of the VW with an Anglia behind it (Anglia behind the bus).  There's also something I can't identify but it looks Skoda Octavia(ish) or possibly a Simca on the left of the photo, the pale coloured parked car before the gap...or is it a Wartburg 311??   You'll need to squint to overcome the pixelation 🤣.

Good shout on the R16

Posted

I was thinking maybe an Armstrong Siddeley 234/236 but the rear light is too big.  Wartburg seems like a good shout though.

I think it is a Skoda Octavia. They were imported and sold in the UK in the 1960's.

Oxford Street used to be so busy you could not move - in it's heyday. I live in London but not been for several years. Seems to have lost it's appeal. The big department stores were really useful.
