Don't see many R4s around in Australia:

Nor many of these Neue Klasses, the first BMW models to be sold in Australia when sales started in 1967. This one however looks quite early, I haven't seen an Australian market one with the rectangular headlights before.

The 2000 models had the rectangular lights. 1500, 1600 and 1800 had the single circular one.

In Australia, 2000s had 4 circular headlamps and TIs had two.

I had a scan of these pictures on flickr and that Mini Moke turns up in quite a few shots. My guess is that it belonged to the photographer. Great find Austat, and thanks for posting.

Apart from a Volvo Amazon (?) not a foreign car in sight - and not a hatchback.

Compared to what was happening in Europe most of these old dinosaurs were on borrowed time once imports took off and people could buy the kind of cars they wanted rather than what they were given by out of touch British manufacturers. Photo is 1967 given the HB Vivas, new Minx, Escort and Cortina 2  shown.

By the mid 60s there were British made French cars like the Renault 4CV and Dauphine and DS. They where not in the photo either. I think there was also import duties on non British made cars was applicable in those days. That made non British cars quite a bit more expensive.

Maybe one of the A40 was a hatchback- countryman version.

My Dad remembered that imported cars tended to be more expensive for spare parts before the 1970s.

Before then Japanese cars were generally not well regarded often very small and even more rust prone than Italian cars.
You also had the war factor, many people would have still been very much against owning a German or Japanese car.
