Autoshite required in July - Squarage of circle neccessary

We bought the Mitsubishite, because Junkdaughter no. 1 does her exams and other stuff, which means 1000 miles a month in urban traffic.
Hence we bought something a bit more suitable for the task, instead of doing it with a bulky waftbarge (many people grossly underestimate the size of a 405).
This was a bit of a luxury we afforded ourselves. As you know, small cars are as expensive to own as big ones.

Since this is coming to an end in July, we will then need a proper car again, i.e. one we can use to travel with the whole Junkfamily and assorted luggage in
total comfort.
And there lies my problem. I'll definitely not buy any newfangled tosh with computers, and suitable older cars are becoming scarce.
Also, the Junkwoman has a different approach to motoring than I have, and I must accommodate that.

The 405 is a darn good car, but after three, I'm a bit tired of them.

Those 3-Litre Hyundais are growing on me, and they look suitably giffertastic. Haven't seen one with non-slip interior yet, though.

In short, I have no idea what to buy, but I'm open to suggestions.

What we are looking for, is some cheap wheels, that are big inside, like old cars used to be, without the tons of ugly fat new cars ferry around at all times.

Excellent visibility is essential!

Cloth and PAS are a must, badermatic desired. 28-30 OMGMPG on a run would be nice.

Please, no coal burners, or Shitroens with this daft suspension.

It's got to be a Volvo. Even posh spec GLE can be had with cloth interior.

Search gumtree for a 740 GLE Auto in blackheath. I'm on phone so can't link.

Having drove Richards 850 TDi at the weekend i can only concur with Volvo too.

Don't worry about that, Man of Junk, you wouldn't be needing any spares* if you had a 300C. Thoroughly excellent motor carriages, especially in estate form (although ALL estates are manual sadly), although saloons ride a little better thanks to coil sprung rear end. They are surprisingly good on fuel if driven like a pensioner but are capable of a frightening turn of speed when not.

* except for maybe an air flow meter...which is the ONLY thing that ever seems to go wrong on them, and even they can usually be cleaned.

I'm thinking Rover 800 series as well, or is that just asking for OMGHGF?

KV6 in the 800 was particularly prone to HGF, but none of the other engines have a massive reputation for it - though anything can blow its top if neglected. I'd seriously consider the 600 as well. Honda power, so they never* go wrong.

Actually, having been wafted around in Skizzer's SD1 and BrookJm's 504 last weekend I can recommend both of those from a passenger perspective.  Both superbly comfortable and spacious.

The Merc suggestions seem right on the money ,there seem to be hundreds of W124s around for not much money, everybody wants the estates, the veg friendly rattlers or the high spec bovined 320's. That means the 4 cylinder pez autos with no cow or air are crying out for Luddite ...er,I mean traditionalist buyers.

Depending on if you can live with no rear legroom, a late 190e 1.8 auto with keep fit windows might fit the bill.

Yes, they're great. I think Six-Cylinder of this parish has one, maybe he's ready to sell it on?

I'd say Volvo as well. 30mpg is possible in a petrol auto and they're big inside. Failing that, what about a Renault 21 Savannah or 25? A Granada MK3 shouldn't be too hard to find in badermatic flavour without cow and those are huge inside.

My thoughts....Despite owning a 190E 1.8 with keepfit windows I cannot recommend for Junkman en famille, there is bugger all leg room in it.  W124 massively better in that respect, W123 beginning to attract OMGLRM tax (Last Real Merc innit) and the rust, always the rust....Also, there must be something seriously wrong with that Cedric to lurk on Ebay for this long at that price but how about trying to find a Laurel.   My mate has one in green with green velour, its filling me with wantage at present....

SaaB 900 (Before GM got involved).

Excellent velour, three of Borg Warners finest speeds & the only hatchback able to carry a double bass*.

Doesn't Vulgalour's brother have an Omigod for sale, complete with Gentleman's Gearbox?  I'm sure I saw it when I visited, and it's not a million miles from you either...
