All of the above will probably appreciate but not by much in cash terms. Sorry, Shiters, bu for real money you will have to go to the top end of the market and for something pretty exotic. eg from C&SC 1982:

 

Aston Martin DB4 Volante - £9750

Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 - £6795

Bentley R Type Continental - £15000

Ferrari Dino GT - £6750

 

Value then £38295, value now approx £1.7 million :o

 

Or, how about a Lister Bristol ex Jack Sears, rebuilt and ready to race £15000. I think that you could name your own price on that now.

 

On that basis, £9k - £12k on an Aston Martin DB7 or Maserati, 3200GT or Quattroporte, should be repaid handsomely, Ferraris and Jaguars are now much too common to gain much ;)

mk5 and 6 escort rs2000 will command good money in future because of those 2 letters

so you want a manufacturer that has brand loyalty, something reasonably common but not everywhere, a bit unusual but not completely mental, shared parts with some other models in the range = loads of spares = easier to get them running again and cheap enough so if you pick the wrong car you don't blow your pension pot

 

it hurts me to say this, actually hurts, like being punched in the stomach, hard, twice, go and buy one of these

Rolls Royce Shadow 1/2 series. Decent Shadow 2 is buyable now for about £6k.

FD/FE Victors have trebled in price in the last 5 years.  

Fiat 130 coupes are still about for about £6k to £8k, they are now where Citreon SM was 7/8 years ago.

Farina Oxfords / Cambriges [all other othe badge engineered variants] are on the rise

Cars and motorcycles seem to be similar in that the first run out models end up being the most sought after - common sense dictates that the first produced should be the first to reach the end of their useful life.

 

When I was looking for a bike last year I was shocked how much early 1200 bandits' were selling for - low mileage sorned examples that had been sat we're going for £1500+.

 

I applied this logic when I bought my busa - I wanted an early unrestricted example with the 220 mph clocks.

The colour was another factor - everybody selling one said that theirs' was the best colour - blue/silver, gret, red/black.

 

For me their was only one colour - copper bronze and silver. I do think it will be the one to have in years to come.

Dare I say it, but I reckon the Mk2 might actually prove a better long-term bet. They rot even more readily, but don't have anywhere near the appeal at the moment as purists all prefer the Mk1. That means rarity is likely to play a hand. So, they could give a massive return, or they could just prove to be the next rubber bumper MGB. Prace bets now!

I think you're onto something with Landrovers, drum.

 

Assuming that some sort of legislation will kill the current Defender over the next few years,  prices for robust 4x4's that can be fixed with a hammer are going to start climbing quickly.  Look at the money that the yanks fork out for dubiously imported Defenders.  Decent Range Rover Classics are getting expensive now and I think that Discovery 1 and 2's will be worth more than their replacements in 10 years time.

 

 

So I'm going to follow skizzers logic and say ADO16's, Disco's and Type 2's getting even sillier especially LHD ones with oddball camper convertions :)

I reckon M.Gs. Not just anything but the 2.5s and stuff in good colours/specs. My tip for a solid investment?.........A Yellow 2.5 ZS saloon.......must be a Y or 51 reg so no Project Drive issues. The M.GF may come good too.

I agree that the money is going to be at the high-end / iconic design / sporty end of the market. And fast Fords.

Subaru Impreza. WRX whatever in blue.

Most will be destroyed by kidz before they rust away, and they have quite a competition record.

Maybe worth storing a few cooking Imprezas to re-shell the fast ones........

 

But more Autoshite would be Renault Avantime.

Phase 1 Clio RenaultSport 172s - the one that had OZ wheels as standard. Currently sub £1500. 

Phase 2 cars don't seem to be too far behind, but the 182 is probably the more 'desirable' due to POWAH.

 

Probably going to go the way of R5 GT Turbos...
