Got any pics now the stance has presumably been sorted?

+1.

Unlowering pics are the Autoshite money shot.

I like the idea that the VAG dealer mechanic just ripped off the customer database and made a tidy profit!

You sir have saved this Veedub from the ritual humiliation of the Pineapple brigade, and for that you deserve a cap doffing of the highest order. These 5 pots do sound fruity as well

One of my fave cars of ever- although all mine were 'states or Santana's. I'd love to get my hands on another nice GX5. From the time when VW were proper. LIKE.

Nice work, Grundig. :)

Original spec 80s VW for the win! B)

Absolutely love these- haven't seen one in years! Excellent work, and I love the fact you're reverting the car to its original state.

'Good evening ladies & gentleman, and welcome to Grundig's Quaint My Ride, where we take some poor innocent pineappled car, and restore it to how the manufacturer intended. None of that lowered, banded steel nonsense here sir, it's standard all the way, now where's my cup of tea and pipe?'

I could deffo see a youtube series in this :P

Good man, you have much positive karma due and the world is a considerably less wankerish place today. This nature of philanthropic activity inspires me to pineapple rape a dubber.

That's great work you've done putting your Passat back to how it should be and glad you saved her from the pineapple brigade..

It really looks like a nice car and a real rarity on the road....I would say with that mileage and history that by the time you've finished with the old girl that it will be the best Passat coupe on the road..

And the added bonus is it comes with A straight 5 VAG lump which has a lovely burble it must be a true one off car and a great find and really looks like it's gone to the right owner now.. :)

Hello Grundig.

I found this post when I googled 'Riversley Garage'.

I come originally from Nuneaton, so have memories of Riversley - my aunt lived opposite the garage at one time and bought a Jetta from them in the '80's (she still had it up to when she died 10 years ago !).

Riversley Garage were the VW dealer in Nuneaton for many years and they were a very well respected company, but closed in about 1994 - as you say, PAWS vets occupy the building today. Riversley were a very small dealership and as I understand closed only because of a VW group policy at the time to concentrate on larger firms. Maybe Edwards of Tamworth closed at the same time ?

The independent specialist who set up after that didn't pinch the trade or contacts from Riversley or anyone else- it was effectively just a continuation of Riversley's service department. After 1994 there wasn't a VW dealer in Nuneaton for about 10 years until Listers set up the showroom which exists today.

It's great to see that you have rescued the Passat and brought it back to standard, and I hope the Riversley service records stay with the car for some time to come.

These are the Volkswagen Audi dealer plates on my Passat, they match the tax disc holder, "Edwards of Tamworth" - 'ON' is a Birmingham registration - The address for Edwards is Coleshill Road, Fazeley, does anyone remember them ??

Edwards of Tamworth used to near me as a kid and i used to go in there for brochures 83/84 time

The salesmen wasnt bothered about me and my mate going in an mooching round the cars , they went bust in 1990 the site is a small housing estate now called Mayfair drive

Great car and good work putting it back to standard.

Do the strut tops rust out in these then?   That might explain why the one I drove in 1995 had some very odd steering when you put your foot down.  Owned by a shiter mate of my dad's I was working for, he also had a Renner 30 and a 305 van.

I missed this first time round, so thanks to jvbcv8 for resurrecting it.  Like everyone has already said, lovely car and brilliant work putting it back to how it should be - looks massively better.  All the 'unique' ones look the bloody same.

Like.  Lots.  Don't be shy about posting more pics.

MOT time  :-o

post-17423-0-75948200-1422126170_thumb.jpg

Not too bad - only two advisories, both rear wheel bearings (slight play)

post-17423-0-58009000-1422126250_thumb.jpg

Anyway, easy fix, so wheel off, blunt screwdriver to tap off the centre cap

post-17423-0-53156800-1422126344_thumb.jpg

... to reveal splitpin, lockring, nut (24mm) thrust washer & outer bearing

post-17423-0-96433700-1422126479_thumb.jpg

took the drum off to have a butchers at the brakes - all looks good

post-17423-0-19938000-1422126575_thumb.jpg

so put it all back together with fresh grease - tightened up the bearing until the drum feels tight to turn, back it off until the thrust washer has a little movement & that should be adjusted just right?? lockring on, new split pin in & cap tapped on

post-17423-0-31531200-1422126705_thumb.jpg

repeat for t'other side n jobs a gud un

also at the mot place

Good stuff!

You have that about right for the rear bearings. VW say nip them up to a certain torque (I don't exactly remember, it's basically "not that tight", about 30-40lbft) then spin them round a bit to make sure the bearings are seated tight, then loosen off a turn and nip them back up til you can just move the washer about with a screwdriver. Spin and recheck. It's more or less "twisting the 32mm socket with a greasy hand") torque

Welcome along. I love the mega fruity exhaust note of these, a classmates mum had a silver estate version. Beautifully corrosion free in the strut mounts too, would put most other cars to shame.

Those were the days, checking out your classmates mums strut tops. Feel the hormones surging grrrrr

1.8 4cyl carburettor engine

post-17423-0-16565700-1426507443_thumb.jpg

I ran about in it for a few weeks until the T&T ran out & one of the issues that showed up, is with the Pierburg 2E2 carb - it runs on after the ignition is off - I had to stall it to stop the engine but once left it just to see how long it would run on for (21 seconds & one loud backfire)

post-17423-0-99426500-1426507687_thumb.jpg

Plan to get this back on the road this year, needs a bit of work but think its doable ??

Good grief. The good old days, when you could peer into an engine bay and see the ground!

21 seconds is good going for run-on in one of these, my old boy's 1.6 got to 5 or 6 seconds before we stalled it! Occasionally  it would run-on and then the last firing would spin it backwards for a good few seconds :-D

I'm awarding you the Polished Pineapple award for services to VAG Shite with these two cars.  You need to get drunk and purchase an estate to complete the set.
