The new old shit.

I noticed the other day, some cars I'd thought of as being "new shit" have become "old shit" seemingly overnight.

I thought it was just three or so years ago since they came out (I remember the adverts playing Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" over and over and over and showing off the fact that it didn't have a key) but nope, it was 14 years ago...shit  And the explains why there's so many knocking around in scrapyards now, and why they look dated (and somehow more like Renners). You can get one under a grand now, if you look hard enough. Just another few years, and I'll be stopping to take pictures of them in the street and think "not seen one of these for years.".

And these.

These are now going for banger money...I remember when they were expensive and posh. Now they've become another "big old Volvo which perverts drive".

For God's sake I remember when these came out like it was 18 months ago Is time just going quicker now I'm a grown up? Anyway, it's scary.

But I'd love to know when you think a car is "old."

I've been waiting for the S60/V70 to become cheap enough for me to get interested. They're not far off now! Beautiful cars to my mind, prior to the facelift anyway.

Shirley you'd struggle to pay OVER a bag for a Lag...

I would say the S60 / V70 are very much within shite budget territory now.  My S60 T5 certainly was.

Laguna 2s are available for much, much less than a grand.  Of course you do then run the risk of the camshaft seizing four days later, but then you'd probably run the same risk if you paid a grand for one.

They were entering the yards at five years old, IIRC - usually with overwhelming electrical malfunctions...

You'd be amazed how many are over that and then some.

I saw Laguna 1.8 at East Coast Salvage in 2010 , it was only on the road 6 years at the time but the keys were missing rendering it worthless so it sat in the yard for another 3 years before finally getting scrapped.

You hardly see any Laguna 2 models on the road - although I have a neighbour with a very nice 53 plate example.

I spoke to an auto spark who explained that diagnosing a fault could take an eternity - couple this with the price of spares and 5 year old cars suddenly are uneconomical to repair.

They are cheap for a reason - in fact they are so poor than not even seasoned auto shitters dare to go there.

I remember my sister telling me back in the day that her neighbour bought one of these new with a redundancy payout.

Apparently he bought it because he liked the keyless entry.  I have the same thing on my Nissan (carried over I guess with the Renault Alliance. Not the 1980s model sold in America - I mean the partnership between Nissan and Renault. ;-)  ).

I really liked these too when they first came out. I guess the better used buys would be the petrol engined basic versions with fewer electrical toys to throw a wobbly?

It's a shame because the Lagunas were pretty OK cars if the boggo 1.6 petrol one I drove was anything to go by.

I rented a turbo diesel Laguna on me hollies once and it went like the clappers but handled like shiz.

Scenics are starting to disappear a bit too, and you never see Espaces now. The only Renaults you really see now are Clios and the odd Laguna. RX4, or Koleos, anyone?

I remember that stupid advert where the Scenic is a dog too bloody well.

they've stopped selling the laguna and espaz here now, which has probably thinned them out a bit.

Peugeot 407's seem to be disappearing fast too. I saw 56 plate one in the scrappies last year.

When my mates wife's Peugeot 207 started to have electricall gremlins all the autosparks he called up locally said "sorry mate, don't do peugeots". Doesn't bode well.

I noticed the other day that new cars, as time passes, become old cars.

I quite like those S60/V70 jobs, my friend owns a V70 D5, it flies along with a nice warbly engine note, is mega comfy and a proper estate. Early ones are available with the VAG 2.5 in-line 5 TDI which would be my preference.

My neighbour spoke to an AA patrolman once when a spate of 406's caught fire - he said he would'nt park next to one, never mind get in one.

It seems that Renault couldn't do wrong for doing right - rather than be criticized for having cars that wouldn't start, they went the other way and built cars that wouldn't turn off - as anybody who had a Laguna dci that grenaded will testify.

Taxi firm over the road from work bridges' 2-3 of these a month. They buy them cheap from the auctions and if they get a couple of months out of them they're happy. They prefer rovers though, and run a sizeable fleet of 45s/75s.

Saying all that the Laguna 2 is a good looking car especially as an estate.

I think frog cars in general are moving into shit/shite territory... Aside from the hatchbacks and the Pug 508 they seem to be doing a remarkable disappearing act.

My nomination for this thread would be the C5 which seems to have disappeared without a trace, I haven't seen one in ages, they seem to have made the transition from 'new shit' to 'gone' without doing the 'old shit' stage.

Tis a strange world, there's a good number of 508s washing around Belfast but no MGs... I think being in NI screws everything up a bit as certain cars are more popular here than on the mainland and vice versa.

When we moved to Cyprus in 2009, I made sure I booked a rental car for the first month, to give me time to buy something.  It was a Tiida saloon, in metallic bronze.  Have I just won the Autoshite Rental Challenge?

I went in a D5 engined XC90 a while ago, I was suprised at how nice it sounded.

And I've notcied what have become thin on the ground as well, the Mk 1 Corsas and even most mark two are proper bangers now.
